No offence but the origional cast is better. but thats just my opinion. Her voice is WAYYYY low for Diannna. i also feel some over acting from the other videos iv seen. srry
She sings very well, but Her voice almost seems to classical to play Dianna. I see Dianna as raw and edgy, Alice was perfect for her. Marin is super talented, but I think they could har chosen a better replacement.
I saw both casts (lots of people did, I'm sure). And they were utterly co-equal. I just feel really lucky to have witnessed such amazing artistry. It's a wonderful show.
oh, @MischiefMovieMakers ...I agree, they all do warble. Every time I listened to the cd it distracted me a bit. But I was re-watching bits from the musical with Alice Ripley, and I think that it really works well in the context of the show...That really dramatic, desperate quality is kind of awesome for Diana's character, to me, anyway.
I feel like Alice's voice had this tone to it that you could almost feel that she was dying, you could feel her ache. Not huge on Kyle Dean Massey, haven't seen much but it doesn't look like he has the playful but haunting quality that Aaron had.
N2N should've stayed open way longer. It's a lot more meaningful than shows like Mamma Mia which is in its 10th year. And I never got the chance to see it on Broadway :[
i feel like no one can play Diana but Alice. she just has that feel...im not saying that Marin isnt talented, but it doesnt have the right vibe. and jennifer was soo perfect and aaron...dont even get me started<3
Why is it that every version of Diana I see always warbles like crazy?? :S It's not really that needed, and it doesn't sound that good in my opinion :/ Let me know if you agree
That's really cool that a husband and wife can be in it as diana and dan. Although no one could ever replace alice ripley, the new diana seems really good. and i can tell henry is really good just by his speaking voice!
BREAKING, BROADWAY FANS: Tony Winner Alice Ripley, Next to Normal cast members, AND national behavioral health experts will be answering YOUR text message questions about the show, subject matter, behavioral health, and the artistic process. To participate: Text KCQA to 66746.
Do half of these people know who Mazzie is? 'Cause if you don't, & you think of her as "the woman who replaced Ripley", then get educated. Mazzie is an amazingly talented actress with a powerhouse voice. Her Diana was spectacular.
& Alice Ripley is just as increduble. But these are two different actresses with different approaches to a very complex, beautifully written role.
Alice interpreted Diana one way. Marin another.
As Sondheim says: "there is no such thing as better, only different".
@boynamedalexxx I saw Marin multiple times and she was a "scream-tress" most of the show - shouting lines to "show emotion" and for the notes she couldn't sing. Vocally, I was left unimpressed cause you only saw technique. She was akin to those stereotypical opera singers said to be so caught up with the vocal masturbation (or lack thereof here) to act. AND it killed me her voice didn't fit the score. I wasn't expecting Alice but GOD I wouldn't want to hear Aretha in Oklahoma! Would you?...
@boynamedalexxx I had the privilege of seeing them both, having been a fan of Mazzie since Ragtime and Passion. To have seen her as Diana was just incredible, emotion and heart-stopping. I think the Alice Ripley is Diana and that Marin played Diana. Both perfectly both powerfully both emotionally and both differently.
@boynamedalexxx I think the "kids" on here don't realize that Marin is a trained singer, and Alice is not, so when they hear Alice sing the songs and she cracking or flat they are associating it with her character being bi-polar and it matches. Marine is hitting all the notes "correctly" and the voice doesn't match the character.... i.e Audra legit singing voice in 110, but her speaking voice was with a heavy southern accent.
No offence to anyone who likes Kyle, who i love, but i find his voice to high for im alive. But then again im obsessed with aarons soooo that maybe it.
@annab3rl1n that is so fukn stupid. There is NOWHERE in the text that indicates Diana has to be white. Audra is an AMAZING performer and would do the role SERIOUS justice. Racist views like yours don't belong in the theatre.
I saw this cast in December, they were spectacular, except for the girl who played Natalie. She mispitched so much of the singing and it just made me confused why the casting crew would cast her when she couldn't sing some of the most basic songs from the show.
I like everybody......except Diana. I'm sure she's a great actress, but the way she sings.......it just seems off to me. She's great and all, but it seems like she's focusing on making it sound good. Part of why I love Ripley as Diana is because her voice is a little on the raspy side at times, making it really distinct and giving it a lot of emotion. But, who knows? Maybe she's better live....
@Meteoria That's exactly what I was thinking the whole time. Plus, she just doesn't look like Diana to me. I'm not sure why, but I just don't find her believable.
The thing about Jason and Marin is, as said in the video, their energies and the way they play the parts are completely different from the original cast. Seeing this cast brought me to tears and left me shaking.
In many shows, it is very easy to pick favourites between actors who have played a single role as the role itself cannot be vastly varied. I feel that Next to Normal is not one of them. The characters and the story are much too personal for actors to play them the same way.
What is wrong with the woman playing Dianas face when she is singing, i couldn't watch that without laughing! She looks like a Werewolf! I hope they bring it to the UK and that she is nowhere near it!
The thing I don't like about Marin is she's too good a singer. I feel like she's putting all of her effort into the singing, and although she still acts it very well, she lacks the emotional intensity that Alice had.
My dreamcast would be: Marin Mazzie as Diana (this video was not a good example of her in the role. I saw her and she did a much better job vocally) Jason Danieley, Aaron Tveit and Jennifer Damiano.
LOVE this gabe, better than Aaron in my opinion, seems more believable as an 18 year old, and the whininess really works for the character... The other new members are all a bit euurrrrgghhh though...
@catherine869 i saw this cast twice on broadway, sure its nto the same as aaron and alice but they were amazing... i saw them october 10 and closing day
@catherine869 I guess you are more of a fan of the actors than the play itself, since it needs to have a freshness with ever new cast member, the story is too personal for someone to play it like another.
How about you all stop being shallow and judging them by looks/appearance and appreciate the story. I understand if people are not amazed by their voices (OBC is hard to live up too!) But it is out of order for people to make fun of their looks. Concentrate on the story!
@thegaythespian Singing something "operatic," if done right is really the tightest kind of singing a person can pull off. It takes a ridiculous amount of control for it to sound good. And remember that most people sit too far from the stage to have this be a problem. It is sort of like stage makeup and jewelry in that if it is done normally, it is not noticed.
This cast is phenomenal. I don't know why everyone makes such a big stink out of seeing the original cast. Marin Mazzie, in my opinion is way better than Alice Ripley. Meghann Fahy matches Jennifer Damiano's talent along with Kyle Dean Massey and Aaron Tveit. The only person I really PERFER out of the original cast is J. Robert Spencer. He's the best Dan, I believe. But honestly, this show is so well written, in the end it wouldn't matter anyway.
@INTERPOLFAN17 Just saw the show yesterday and I completely disagree I thought the same thing going into the show but now that I have seen the new cast Marin Mazzie is sooooo much better than Alice Ripley in my opinion I like her voice alot better, Meghann Fahy I feel is alot better as she's really attractive and has a stronger voice, Kyle Dean Massey...no where near as good as Aaron but everyone else I felt was better than the originals
