  • Nice Job, motion is indeed a wonderfull piece of software!

For an increased secutity, you can also use encfs:

just put your encrypted folder in Dropbox like Dropbox/.encrypted

end the clear one anywhere you want ;-)

    Cheers

  • I take it this will work in Ubuntu Server 11.10? I was thinking maybe using a screen session to take care of the scripts and what not. Also will it stop recording when the motion it detects stops? I suppose there's something in the config file, I haven't read through it yet. Just getting your thoughts :)

  • Thanks for an awesome tutorial!

I've got it working, but the motion process doesn't stop when I come back and close the terminal window.

Do you have an idea why that is?

  • thanks for the tutorial, it was really useful but I've got a small problem when I lock the window motion is still running ?

  • does anyone know of a forum where i can get further information for us beginners. I have stacks of questions

  • @mcrapattack Try ubuntuforums, they're pretty friendly to beginners. (Sorry I can't put a link here, youtube doesn't allow links in comments.)

  • @dgwthezombie Thats the main forum i use for general linux stuff but for specific apps sometimes they are not good. They never answered years back about this subject. I meant i am a beginner to this issue not linux

  • Thank you! Now I need to look into extending cables to use old webcams or buying inexpensive cams to record ghouls and gobblins outside.

  • I was only looking for a simple way to have a live webcam on my ubuntu server, but damn, this was informative, i didn't even know there was suck a thing as crontab! I think I am going to read up on that now that I know it exists haha. Thank you for making this tutorial, and It no doubt helped me, and I am def. going to check out your other videos :)

  • great tutorial, thanks! do you have any suggestions on how to get something to notify your mobile phone when it has uploaded pics or video?

  • @wbequet If you are notified on your phone when you get email, then you could use a program like sendEmail to have it email you when something happens. If you look in the motion config file, line 513 has "on_event_start value". Remove the semicolon and change the value to the sendEmail command. If you want to be texted, I'm sure it's possible, but an easy way to do it doesn't come to mind.
