I remember reading about this cover. The Femmes said that since Waits declined to produce one of their albums, they decided to butcher one of his songs. Not being bitchy; that's actually what they said.

I am a huge fan of the tom waits version, but I will admit I can appreciate this. Its different. While waits pours his heart into the sales pitch, these guys seem to be mocking the whole thing, which I can accept as a different interpretation. No art is bad. Art is not a contest. There is art that you can appreciate and art you can't. Thats all.

wow. i just checked out tom waits version. i thought at first that he was imitating louie armstrong in a very discourteous way. know what? i will take this version of the song. at least the violent femmes sound like the violent femmes doing this song. as cover tunes should. i didn't post this to be ragged on for my retched taste, and it is on the femmes version, so no tom waits fans will see it. just go watch his jazz. abortion instead.

this song is for violent femmes fans. sorry tom waits fans. u should go listen to ur idol and not try to find videos to throw under the bus because the band covering it is not duplicating it to ur specifications. this song is for me. and the kazillion other people who appreciate the uniqueness that the violent femmes bring out in this song. i adore the violent femmes. they manage to creep me out with the subtilest of songs. tom waits can't do that.
