As much as the world already is an ADD nation you now want to give people the ability to search specific quotes? Why not give them then the chance to learn something on their own.
"Three years ago, the Authors Guild, the Association of American Publishers and a handful of authors and publishers filed a class action lawsuit against Google Book Search.
Today we're delighted to announce that we've settled that lawsuit..."
I like google book search and believe it is fair use. However, the thumbnail example is not exactly the same as what google does. Though end-users see a 'thumbnail' or 'transformation' of the book, google has copied the entire work to its personal servers. In the case of the thumbnails, only the transformation was stored on the engine's servers.
One reason why this is so pertinent is a point made near the beginning of the video. You may need to pay to use quotes form another book in your own published work if you wish to profit from it, which is ridiculous.
Additionally, there is also a nice conclusion at the end of the video around 27 minute in that literally says "Why should we care?"
I really wonder how itunes and Imeem managed to preview copyrighted work for 30secs for each song (which is much more than 10% of original content) got away and Google is being sued. Copyright laws nowadays are so strict that things are not getting into public domain.
some obviously absorb little of this, based on comments. It's truly excellent. Thank you for your efforts to bring it to the web. Your presention is one that many companies should consider hiring. Quite pleasant in it's presentation.
Gee I wonder what other website that we're all using, might this legal debate relate to. Especially since Google just bought it. The more fundamental problem is that the copyright laws of this and many other nations need to be changed since they're both anti-consumer and outdated business models. But tell that to corporations and their lawyers.
I thought Dr. Lessig gave a great overview of the Author's Guild lawsuit, and presented a very clear, logical argument for why Google Print should be considered fair use.
This court case, and others like it recently, are very important--copyright's future is being determined *now*.
Oops, I just read that "holders of the [J.D.] degree in the United States do not, by custom, take the title 'Dr.' in formal address or common speech." Sorry about that!
so what were the results of the law suit? Is it still being decided?
