The guy who jumped out was really the smarter of the two. He saw that it was potentially going to turn into a chase, and he didn't want to be on the 6 o'clock news as the dead passenger thrown out of the escaping vehicle when it inevitably rolled into a highway ditch. So he jumped out and made it clear that he was surrendering.
