The fiddle that Arthur Smith has in this photo looks similar to a fiddle that Vassar Clements played. I can tell because of the bearded man sculpted on the head of the violin.
that was eric weissberg playing in the movie sound track. i saw him and marshall brickman play some tune, back to back, each one fretting the other's banjo. they were both great, but don reno is about the only banjo player who can play any song in all keys without a capo. reno was the absolute best of the best banjo players. reno was a hot guitar player, too.
this is the first time iv heard this version sad to say iv only heard the deliverance version this is great my dad used to play his banjo tapes in the car when i was little can't remember the artists but i used to love it its great havin parents from the bush they know great music does anyone know who actually played the banjo in deliverance cuz iv heard that kid didnt know how to play and there was another kid sitting behind him playing would love to know who that is what a talent!
One again the educator educates, Thank You for this amazing post! I agree with the other posters I like this composition much better than the movie version. I found this by a favorite from MrGreer51 otherwise know as BanjoPhil check his videos out.
Keep in mind that this is just the first "recorded" version of the song. Most old time musicians claimed this tune and many similar tumes featuring "feuding" instruments were around as far back as they could remember. If it had not been for the popularity of the movie version - and the promising financial gain - no lawsuit by Reno or Smith would have occured. And finally, if it had not been for Weissberg's incredible arrangement, no one outside the south would ever have heard "Dueling Banjos".
I never realized that the original "duel" was between two different banjos, a tenor and a 5-string. This makes a lot more sense than the later version between a 5-string and a guitar. Thanks for posting this.
It was called the Feudin' Banjos because of the feud for popularity between the 4-string tenor banjo and the 5-string country/bluegrass/mountain banjo. Good upload!
Reno and Smith had to sue the makers of Delivernce to get their due...they appeared in federal court and played this for the judge...woulda been fun to be a fly on the wall that day!
@jityr2 I didn't know the original version was from the 50's called "Feudin' banjos"? I never realized that the original "duel" was between two different banjos, a tenor and a 5-string. This makes a lot more sense than the later version between a 5-string and a guitar. Thanks for posting this.
@1789crazy It depends how you look at it. Dragonforce has a MAC for each person in the band. Don Reno and Arthur Smith had banjos and that's about it. I'm not saying that Dragonforce isn't good. They are (in the studio), but I find that for something to sound that badass almost 60 years ago is just amazing.
@Patchworkdrum yeah i got your point..this is pretty good..hey if u like u can check another amazing guitar player..hes a spanish man his name is paco lucia...check the guy he plays acoustic guitar like only god would
they play this song so fast, time itself slows down!

The 1st Marine Div should have used this music during the Basra campaign...AQ would have surrender in droves.
