  • downing xub now, thanks for the info.

  • lxde

  • did you say what version of xubuntu this was - I didnt hear?

  • Thanks for posting. I'm almost sure that I'm going with the Xubuntu when the new Ubuntu LTS comes out.

  • boring btw

  • anyway im looking for those 3d computer systems.

a desktop like thing that you can move around and float or whatever.... spacy

  • most of us know what system he ran.. HAHAHAHAHAAHA

  • I'm really leaning towards Xubuntu when Meerkat is no longer supported.

  • reason y xubuntu runs faster than vista on 4 gigs of ram is. . . . .xUbuntu does not hang a bit . . . !. . . . .windows hangs !

  • @3chint Vista sucked all the way, no escuses. Total disaster, and MS in particular Steve Baldhair should be taken to court procecuted for cheating users. Life time in jail or death penalty, preferebly the latter. They admitted they cheated and lied and pissed on users and they bragged about it, they were very proud of it - but they have not paid shit for that. Probably never will. This is what happens, when a monopoly has enough money to bribe the judges and politicians. It is risk-free.

  • @MsPwain Microsoft = More criminal than Mexican drug cartels.

  • Never mind all the douchebags, Rivahratt.

  • Do you always start sentences with "ftthf"?

  • is lubuntu faster than this?

  • although I SKIPPED vista for obvious reasons..a 256 ram 1 core cpu on xubuntu versus a 4 gig ram 2 core cpu on vista....yes AND no as far as which is faster..it depends. YES VISTA can be tweaked TO RUN within 95% of xp pro 64 bit's real speed..it's a good bit of work but YES i can be done. 2nd IT DEPENDS ON THe PROGRAM you're trying to run. chromium and chrome on BOTH o.s.'s will run the same speed, adobe photoshop ( or similarly demanding vid edit app) yeah=faster in xubuntu. details :D

  • geezzus!!!! Go compile your own system!!!

  • Are you old enough to use Linux?

  • @x2deemable Everyone is :D

  • Hey is that a Dell Latitude C800? Thanks

  • Good job. I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 on laptop and runs excellent.

  • I would use anyone because both of them are Linux. I have Ubuntu on a PC and Xubuntu on another one. Both are awesome!

  • @chidori602 What an accurately written comment. To answer your question, $72.99 is how much I paid for four gigabytes of RAM. To tell you the truth, you seem to have the maturity level of a nine year old.

  • @Rivahratt95 But you sound like a 9 year old.

  • @dentithj08 It's not uncommon actually, not everyone has a deep voice. My voice isn't that high but he could be 12-16 maybe.

  • or a hot chick...intellectually similar, but socially, a different animal

  • @dentithj08 yeah, a 9 year old who uses linux. A bit different to the usual :P

  • @Rivahratt95 i paid 76.50$ for 8 Gigs >:D

  • @chidori602

    dont be a dick

  • @chidori602 Considering windows 7 with an Kaspersky antivirus and Firefox open uses 1.8 GB of RAM; it really isn't much. -Sent from my 9GB RAM computer :3

  • @CirnoLikesMath Hah, you have... hah... you you

    You have kaspersky.

You don't really have a valid opinion if you have kaspersky.

  • @Thatguywhoexists It's not by choice. My parents insist so I don't get "viruses"...

  • @CirnoLikesMath Get rid of it anyway?

    will they honestly fucking notice?

  • You are a ignoramus its not x-ubuntu its pronounced zoo-buntu

  • @scenegta - It really aught to be pronounced "ksubuntu", but no-one seems to know the proper pronunciation of the letter 'X' these days...

  • I love my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. I have an older computer that literally, is 1 MB of ram lower than the requirements for Ubuntu.

If I go with XUbuntu, when it shows a Terminal command, is compatible with all the other --Ubuntus

  • xubuntu is win = much faster. looks great too.

  • Nice braces, I hear them. It digusts me.

  • Do you still use Xubuntu?

  • what about mtythbuntu and kubuntu?

  • I know this vid is very old, but can you please upload your wallpaper and send me the link? (preferably above 1024/768)

  • how much ram does xubuntu need to run?

  • you laugh at Pentium 1, but at one point that was the processor we nerds gasmed over. just cause it's slow now doesn't mean its funny. t'was a stepping stone for all that is computer now

  • I love the way you talk and explain things. I'm not judging on anything. But just based on voice recognition on my on opinion (you sound younger than the usual computer population) and I'm very impressed with your videos. SUBSCRIBED. Please keep the videos coming.

  • Hey dude I was trying to install ubuntu10.4 on a ibm thinkpad 760 233 mhz laptop with 256 mb of ram I will try Xubuntu it sounds better

  • DUDE I WAS WATCHING THIS VIDEO JUST NOW AND THERE'S A GNAT IN THIS ROOM TOO! He's bugging the heck outta me! Btw Go Linux!!!

  • @SUPERBOYZable ...Along with regular ones. Chances are either you or someone you know has an old Pentium III PC lying in your attic.

  • Xubuntu is pronounced as this --> zoo-boon-too

  • lubuntu

  • @fairyheli2 looks interesting, but still pretty beta.

  • Why the heck do i have 248 mb of ram? only 8 mb away :D

  • Here is some awesome news. With LXDE, I managed to make Ubuntu Command Line get a GUI, and it looks GGGGRRRRREAT!! Even Frosties' Tony would like it. It runs Compiz (32MB Video RAM), and Lubuntu (128MB of System RAM OMG!!!!). You would not think that Ubuntu 10.10 (so recent) would run on the Dell Latitude C540 (so earlier this century)

  • blah blah blah

  • Last I heard, Xubuntu is requiring a gig of ram and a ghz processor. While I admint, those system requirements aren't hard to meet, if you find yourself looking for to run an OS on a very old machine, you really should check out puppy linux, dsl or feather Linux.

  • @puppylinuxuser Minimum system requirements

You need 192 MB RAM to run the Live CD or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time.

To install Xubuntu, you need 2.0 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with starting from 192 (or even just 128) MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM.

    from xubuntu.com...

  • u suk dick

  • @MarilleChan

    I'm sad for you

  • Am I the only one who sees a younger chris pirillo here? same geek references. Same style of talking, similar style of going about topics. I felt it was TOO similar at one point. Live streaming? Community of geeks? hmmmm...

  • I wanted to try Sabayon, Xubuntu, or Puppy Linux. After seeing your review, I might consider Xubuntu for my laptop. Nice video.

  • Great video, just what I was after! :-D I'm typing this from a Thinkpad R40e and have recently put Xubuntu on it. Runs beautifully and boots up faster than even my Core 2 27" iMac!! Amazing. I've not looked back since. Before I did this, this machine had XP Pro on it and ran so slow it was unusable together with all the updates; but now I can use it properly every day! FWIW, i have got 228.5 megabytes of RAM and 20GB HD.

    Just brilliant!

  • I installed the 10.04 on a Pentium 2 with 256 MB and it's faster that the XP. Remeber, the Xubuntu comes ready to run all the recent applications and by default it's installed with very good apps. On windows i had to install lots of softwares to become similar to Xubuntu... and when i did this, the XP became slow as hell.

  • Yo dude don't hate on old Pentium I machines. Without them no one could have even Pentim II :-D:-D:-D Good video, by the way

  • I have an old machine 1.7GHZ Pentium M Processor with integrated graphics card and 512 ram. Xubuntu just won't install, in fact not a lot of Linux OS installs on that machine for some reason. I'm not technically minded so I don't know how to get around it all. Guess I'm stuck with windows xp.

  • Exactly the same reason i switched from ubuntu to xubuntu, xubuntu is more "bullet proof" and much faster.

  • you say Xubuntu "zoobuntu"

  • Linux will always run much faster than an equivalent windows machine, always... Love it. I'll try Xubuntu, I use Linux Mint and I love it, No problems at all.

  • I ran xubuntu on an old dell inspiron 5000 laptop with a 600MHz pentium III and 128mb of ram and it ran.

  • lol, i have a pentium 4, ive crammed 2 gigs of ram in it, and it runs compiz fusion, the advanced effects, everything

    and its ubuntu 9.04

but ive tried xubuntu a long time ao, i dont know if ill switch or not

and to hell with peope who dont know what gimp is, im a gimp wizard

  • Will Xubuntu run on an old clunker 733 MHz with 256 RAM?

  • @JesusManson323 Of course. You may not get optimal speeds but it will run. :)

  • @Rivahratt95 Certainly better than my Dell Lat. C540, sitting beside the computer I'm posting from.

  • @JesusManson323 runnin it on a PIII 650 with 512 megs and an 8 meg vid card (IBM Thinkpad T20)... works nice man

  • @JesusManson323 it will run beter then windows xp

  • @JesusManson323 ...man..you can run Xubuntu on 400MHz and 64MB RAM :D

  • @joSSka

You can... But it will suck major ass.

  • @SuperKittyPancake without compiz and that shit wil works good....but..gentoo is gentoo :P :D

  • @joSSka

    LOL!

I can't say that I never tried using compiz on a computer that low of specs.

Gentoo will work on every computer since it has a CLI.

  • @JesusManson323 also look into "damn small linux"

  • @JesusManson323 If it's slow, maybe you could use Puppy linux

  • @JesusManson323 You could Try Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux as they are designed to run on old, slow machines

  • @JesusManson323

You csn also try puppy linux for older computers, normally for comps that have used windows 98 or 2000

  • @101HAVOC Thanks. Since that post 6 months ago, I have stayed with Puppy Linux. I found Xubuntu to be too bloated for anything under 1 GHz processor. Puppy Linux 5.1 is awesome. I even use it on newer computers because it has almost everything a typical Ubuntu Linux user would want. But it's faster and takes up less space.

  • @JesusManson323 dude try Lubuntu it runs on older pc's much better (Xubunu runs great as well) it's your choice

  • @JesusManson323 try Lubuntu

  • @zinadork I have Xubuntu running LXDE interface? Isn't that the same thing as Lubuntu?

  • @JesusManson323 Not exactly. They are all Ubuntu at heart and what differs is the interface, so if you are running LXDE interface in Xubuntu, you still have the added weight of the xfce stock apps on top of the lxde apps. Running pure Lubuntu would be lighter on the system. I use the LXDE interface when I am hosting with virtualbox to take strain off of my system.

  • @zinadork Wow thanks. Good to know. I've been under the wrong impression all this time. Gonna give Lubuntu a try now.

  • @JesusManson323 you could always install puppy linux :P

  • @mtothem1337 Thanks. I installed Puppy Linux and it is freaking awesome.

  • @JesusManson323 when you buy 256mb RAM it will work fine

  • @JesusManson323

it will, he said that it would run on pentium I and as i know pentium I processors are from 60 to 300MHz, so yes it will run on this system!

  • @JesusManson323 You may have to load it using a stronger computer...then remove the hard drive and put it into your 733mhz with 256mb. That's what I had to do (with those exact same specs).

  • @libertyforever76 I got it to run a year ago (when I posted the comment). Thanks tho.

  • @JesusManson323 Use better knopix or knoppix =)))) its based on ubuntu like xubuntu but, it runs better on the old PCs =)))

  • @JesusManson323 If you use Lubuntu, it will run smoother as it uses even fewer resources

  • its pronounced ZOObuntu, nice video.

  • I have a pc with Xubuntu 9.04, Intel Pentium III 966 Mhz processor, 256 mb ram and a 32 mb graphic card. Compiz Fusion runs great!

  • my eee pc 900 (900mhz, 16gb, 1gb ram) is faster than that with ubuntu 9.10 :D!

  • Your voice is annoying.

  • hey voices arent everything.. he is young.. and shows he got some knowledge!

  • my pc's running ati radeon 9250

will Xubuntu 9.10 detect and/or install the driver for my graphic card?

i just want to know if i can run compiz on xubuntu 9.10 with my graphic card

  • If you want to run Compiz, I would suggest install Ubuntu 9.10 rather than Xubuntu 9.10.

  • @Rivahratt95 if compiz can run famously on Lubuntu, then it should run well on Xubuntu as well

  • @gaiken456 if you want to run ubuntu xubuntu kbuntu linux mint etc i recomend a nvidia graphics cards nvidia is the most compatible with linux ;)

  • @gaiken456 yeah

  • @gaiken456

i have seen it run on a old sony erroicson :p

  • those processors that you're talking about that are crap they exist!! actually i have some clients that still have them and they are really grateful that XUBUNTU exists so just for your information they still exist in people's life....

  • Arch linux ftw!

  • Ubuntu is so awesome for PCs that can't run anything newer than WinXP. I still prefer Win7 if the computer can handle it though :-S

I have Ubuntu running on an Athlon64 3000+ single core with 512mb RAM (32mb shared w/ GPU) and it's not as fast as your Xubuntu!! Do you know how I can manually strip it down to use less resources so I don't have to reconfigure everything?

  • Can you use wine to play games like wow on xubuntu?

  • 3D games; not the best idea. Basic, non graphic intensive game; worth a shot.

  • Is that far a low end pc or any pc with xubuntu?

  • Pretty much any PC with Ubuntu. Wine is great but not for graphic intensive applications.

  • What Ive played wow using wine on Ubuntu and it plays fine.

  • linux mint XFCE version (which is based on xubuntu) is alot better than regular xubuntu cause alot of things work out of the box and its beautiful. should give it a try.

  • cant here it :/

  • Girl or boy voice? cant tell. :\

  • Great video. Just a couple of tips for future video. (This is coming from someone who does not follow you or your video's)

    1) No one cares about the nat. Stick to your subject.

    2) Don't use acronyms like, "WTF"

    3) If your going to make a video, do something in the video. You have 4 min's all of which you show 1 application.

Otherwise, Great review. I have downloaded and installed Xubuntu, based on your opinion.

  • Haha. Ya you make some good points. Although, this is one of my older videos. If you check out my recent videos you will see that quality in all aspects has improved.

  • Great video mate

  • google chrome is out soon and will boot in 5 seconds, it is linux based. but i like ubuntu and kubuntu

  • @Insatanic haahahhaa google chrome is a WEB BROWSER, I think you got confused somewhere.

  • No! They also Make an OS

    I know the Web browser

but they also make a OS you see

  • how old are you??? me only nine and i made my laptop dulur boot

    GO LINUX!

  • @izanesmith lol

  • @izanesmith LOL what is dulur boot? :D learn to type.

  • @6250valtra Dude, I was just kidding. I am not that stupid. I dual boot 11.04 and Windows 7.

  • @izanesmith Yeah I love how some people think that the younger people don't know about computers, when I was 11 I had installed Ubuntu.

  • I really don't like the XFCE interface. Maybe u'll like to take a look at Kubuntu(KDE Interface, and KDE is looking a lot more better in my opinion).

  • You talk with a lot of spit.

  • @glennzoo RIGHT XD

  • im tripping i thought that rainbow thing in the back ground was moving

  • @ever1tubes that's why they call it dope lol

  • lol u remained me of Chris Pirillo

  • please rehearse what you're going to say, perhaps have it written out ... it looks like this could have been a web post, no need for the video.

  • I have taken care of my "Uh......" problem. If you look at some of my recent videos, I know more about the concept that I am discussing.

  • You did fine. No problem with the "UH" thing because I've seen worse elsewhere on YouTube. I just did my own long demo of Xubuntu and will be posting it here soon. It will likely be on my channel be the time you see my message. Take care.

  • Xubuntu isn't a bad distro, it's pronounced /zuːˈbuːntuː/. I used to use it on one of my older Laptops for about 3 years. I now use a combination of Arch Linux & LXDE. Works quicker for me. ( : Ain't nothin' to it, but to do it.

  • hey I just read your comment and I was wondering how could I best learn to install Arch with XFCE on top ? I mean, I'v been using Ubuntu for years, but I need something MUCH quicker but I don't know where to start... (command lines, Pacman, etc...)

what I want to say is : "How did you learn Linux?"

    whoa... sorry for the confusion...
