Hahaha, right around 5:05, that foot thing that Jaco does, I do that exact thing when I'm playing bass. It looks and feels super awkward, but so right.
Love the way Jaco looks at Scofield at the end, like "how the hell did we both land on the same ascending thing at the same time?!?!" Brilliant stuff.
I wish...I wish Jaco had recognised his alcoholism...I wish Jaco accepted himself as an alcoholic beyond human aid...and I wish Jaco had walked into an AA meeting and never looked back. He would be alive and thriving today. The magic word when wishing is action....
DAMN!!!!!! JACO KILLED JOHN ON HIS OWN SOLO!!!!! Sorry man, but Jaco destroyed John here. I know it's not a competition but jeez... It was the King holding court and boy I'm glad this is on video. Thanks!
The last time I saw Jaco was at the Cleveland Agora with Weather Report doing the "Heavy Weather" Tour back in 1974?? (don't tell ANYONE, because I was only 14 years old then.)
I used to have this video! I don't know what happened to it...Jaco was VERY high during the "instruction" part of the video, but at least he had the great Jerry Jemmott there to steer him. Yeah, looking back at it, this is not one of Scofield's best performances, but it DEFINITELY doesn't suck. And Kenwood Dennard is on point!!! This video was my introduction to him. A monster!
@FZmustacheFZ I doubt it, he's a master musician, he probably wasn't feelin it, I think he plays pretty well here. I'm a big Jaco fan and I think when you really get into his playing, this stuff here actaully makes me feel sad for Jaco, you can tell he's not really 'there', he was so talented, such an innovator, and his playing here is just a shadow of his former self. He was the best. RIP Jaco.
With a trio, there's just nowhere to run or hide. While the big band versions of The Chicken are awesome, this trio thing is simply staggeringly good! I just love it.
@totalcontrast as an player, most surtenly, but NOT as a writter. His own stuff was actually mediocre. He was particulally good with miles davis in "you're under arrest".
kenwood dennard + jaco pastorius =awesome groove and feeling!!i don't like the sconfield performance on this take!!I do not understand what he thought(at 3:40!!!!)
@memphis148 nah hes actually saying something about the surprises you get when jamming... 'surprises' kind of turned into '...prises' at the beginning of the video
The tragic part of Jaco was he didn't work with people like Quincy who would have opened a whole new world to him.......i love Jaco but he could have have been a composer of greatness.
jaco is just the master.all those different ideas improvised on the spot show you he has so much to say when he picks up a bass, and all the words are beautiful. so funny when they cant agree on an ending and jaco jumps early but they carry on! his face when he looks at schofield after that just tells a story!
...and drummer Kenwood Dennard. Jaco has frets on what looks like a Precision neck retrofitted to his famous Jazz body. He had probably dug huge grooves in his fretless neck with those Rotosounds...
Hello, reader. If you started reading this, don't stop or else. I hate people who post these kind of comments but.... Post this to 16 videos in 30 minutes and promise your self to never listen to these kind of comments or make one up. But this one is real.If you don't post this, a boy with no head or legs will show up in ur room at midnight kill you. Everyone will forget u. start posting. the timer will start as soon as you finish reading this. yes I do hate these coments
John Scofield wanted to end around 7:35, if you observe properly. But Jaco HAD to do that superfill (not saying that it's a bad thing), so Scofield had to play what seemed like the ending again.
One of the best.. it's like to say "hendrix was a good guitarist"
All the bassist after him are only a copy. He also invented the fretless bass. bassists said: "I heard Jaco for the first time in '76 and thought it was incredible, absolutely amazing. I left immediately and went to buy a fretless bass" - JEFF BERLIN
"When in 1976 bought the first record of Jaco I listened for an year and a half" MARCUS MILLER. " When I heard Jaco I was absolutely shocked by his records" VICTOR BAILEY
in the beginning of this video he is stringing up this bass and during the course of the vid mentions that it is in fact fretted. One of the view times you will hear him not playing a fretless
@acewizard44 Sorry, but this is a fretted neck. If you watch the original 'Modern Electric Bass' video that this is taken from, you will plainly see he is using a fretted Fender Jazz.
john schofiled that little lick at 1:49 awesome!
