Interesting the historian says that nobody has ever been able to say whether the guillotine hurt. A scientist in the last century actually asked a condemned man if he would agree to respond immediately after the execution, if he was still alive, with eyelid blinking. Immediately after his head was cut off, the man was asked by the scientist if he could hear him, to which he responded yes and also confirmed that it hurt. He obviously didn't last long, but it was at least several seconds.
The Day after Rochembeau won the battle of Yorktown for the Americans during their Revolution, Thomas Jefferson proclaimed that all Americans had 2 countries; The USA and France. French-American territory was mapped as part of The United States to abide by American Constitution sans slavery from 1783-1789. The Americans were kindred with Louis XVI and Rochembeau. NEVER with Robespierre and Napoleon. Lafayette appeared to be a friend until he jumped ship to support The Terror, for personal gain.
@beardedswine not at all. I don't believe royals are evil in this day and age, and i don't eve believe louis and marie were evil, just weren't right for the job back then. Today the royal family has hardly any influence over politics and are just a symbol of power, nothing more. There's no reason for them to die
@Jackibars sounds like you've done your research. i don't want to sound rude but you should look into the subject and not believe what they tell you on the news if you really care. no law is passed in this country without the queen's consent, she has absolute power over our armed forces, and she can hire or fire any minister she wants including the prime minister (they are ministers for the queen). i know the news and your tv says the monarch has no power, i'm just here to tell you that it does
@Jackibars you don't think louis and marie were evil? they murdered people that stood against them. i don't care what position of power they are in it's still murder. even more so in their position i'd say. and yes i think murderers are evil
@beardedswine murder for the 'right reasons' back then it was normal for them, i guess everyone has a bit of evil in them. But killing them would just make you as bad as them, unless your dexter
@Jackibars you are 100% correct that it would make me as bad as them. i guess that comment was just me venting anger and i was wrong. i am against the death penalty. i'll correct myself in what i really meant is they should be locked up and the key be thrown away. but i stand by my comment they were evil. just because people were doing it back then. you know the nazis were doing evil shit do you think those people weren't evil because that's what other people were doing?
Anyone who thinks the French have always been pompous, overly dressed, frog eating, weirdos; has obviously never studied their history, as it is one of the bloodiest in all of Europe.(Would you believe an American with no French ancestry just said this?)
The Third Estate General Assembly was scheduled to occur. Traditionally held as a "town hall" meeting with King and the people themselves present to voice all concerns and hear future plans and news. It was meant to help the decision making process. Robespierre and co. were about 12 people, not 500, and they elected themselves "National Assembly" stating that they would speak for the people. This means that THEY and NOT the people, were the Third Estate, thus blocking true public participation.

I love how you guys talk down the French Revolution and yet praise the American Revolution. In fact, many founders helped the revolutionists; most notably Thomas Paine, who moved to France and became a propagandist for the revolutionists. The founders were all for it... were they communists and socialists? Hell yes they were, but don't tell the Tea Party this.
Do you think you can hire someone to rule your country and have them live in a straw hut? Risk their lives in a high-stress position and maintain international relations? Why don't you volunteer for the job for free, no hut? I support democracy. But prior to it there had to be something. An impoverished Monarchy symbolized an impoverished nation. Royalty treated without dignity meant a weak nation without pride. Only when a ruler is PROVEN corrupt or ineffective, should they be disentitled.
@AmericanOriginals and the fact that the monarchy lived in a lavished lifestyle and the people were starving doesnt PROVE corruption?? What youre saying is that, it is alright to have the monarchy spend in things like Versailles and have the people nto even afford basic needs like flour?? you are completely ignoring the fact that the people were starving therefore proving the monarchy to be inefficient, and even if the revolution was a disaster it was the base for the strong nation it has become
@xhappyxlifex You misunderstood his statement. The job requirement would pay significantly more than the average job, for starters. And the point is that the information incriminating Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, in fact, has never legitimately been proven. A crop failure made flour more expensive, stressing the impoverished. I personally find it hard to sympathise with such violent, cruel, wicked and twisted behavior on the part of so-called "hungry people". More monsters than victims.
France was on the ground floor of a major opportunity for growth. But thanks to the riots, France would have to wait until The Napoleonic Wars; One Emperors' attempts to take over the world as a Dictator, were finally over. There was no logic. France had Peace Treaties and excellent foreign relations with America and Europe. I hope every so-called "Revolutionary" (aka rioter) went to Hell, along with Napoleon Bonaparte. That they had the power to violently do whatever they wanted is a LIE!!!
@StarQualityWins Partially WRONG: France was quite isolated and was late with the very beginning of industrial revolution thayt already started in UK. Peace Treaty at that time were not long-term engagements: alliances change all the time and each generation knew the war. You cannot say what would have happen otherwise, nobody can re-write history! It happens that way, FACT.
@aer0smith1 Wrong. "Seige From Within", "Hostile Take Over" disguised as some two-bit "Revolution". Robespierre, made things look as bad as he could, lied to the public, used tabloids to create anger, and took advantage of a transitional period. A tyrant opportunist. France was already heading toward Democracy. He used the people to chase out the Sovereign, then proceded to take all of the credit for the work of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and Parliament for a Modern Constitutional Monarchy.
@StarQualityWins Why do you put quotation marks around the word Revolutionary? Do the French Revolutionaries not meet the criteria of revolutionaries? Please explain this criteria to us so that we may understand your claim.
@xORIGINx Well, it's because I disagree completely with the popular view of this event, and don't believe the "revolutionaries" truly pertained to a true idea of Revolution, one akin to the Americans. I believe it was an idea used for cover, and that the people were brutalized by Robespierre & Co.
@StarQualityWins They certainly could have been less brutal, but in an effort to understand their violent enthusiasm, they were descending further into poverty with no sign of a solution. Hunger - plain hunger - can bring out the animal in humankind.
How would you characterize the character of the American Revolution - a "true revolution"? And, maybe you could elaborate on the differences between the American Revolution and the French Revolution, especially those relevant to the last question.
@xORIGINx Robespierre in my opinion was a bag of hot air. He used talk and tabloids to incite anger in people. I believe he lied claiming it would take 10-15 years for things to improve. The Monarchy predicted improvement within the year. Louis XVI was working with his Ambassador, Thomas Jefferson. He wrote the French Constitution by his own accord. The people were kept isolated and were used, because without the riots, take-over wasn't possible. You may disagree, but I'm done talking about it.
@StarQualityWins You are wiser, than these other Freemasons and Illuminati fools who believe in the french revolution. The history channel is very biased as well.
@xORIGINx The American Government initiated change and had to fight their Sovereign for independence in order to obtain Democracy and Liberty. I believe that France was already a sister country in this movement. I believe that Louis and Marie had begun working toward Constitutional Monarchy. I believe that neither Government officials, nor the people as claimed, initiated an over-throw. A renegade group initiated revolt as a tool for internal take-over, via preaching lack of hope to the public.
even if he had made it to Austria, still probably wouldn't have helped. the austrian army would probably have had to massacre most of if not the entire population of paris just to hope and stop the uprising. it was just delaying the inevitable
this show has so many errors dr g didn't invent it he introduced it and louis didn't have penile surgery he just didn't know how to fuck marie's uncle came from austria i think or louis uncle, someones uncle came and explained how to fuck then the two concevied
@dalahast06 I think it's more that the people aren't demanding enough when they have been opressed. It's like "Ok THEY where bad, but we can adjust the system and make it better". Kind off like religion actualy, the people-opressing crap got adjusted over and over insted of people flushing it down the toilet.
cant believe how stupid some of these comments are how can anyone call for a return of the guillotine (@gunsofbrixton1975) its horrible that same guillotine killed many inncocent people poor, rich alike and as for the king he was not stupid they did have fake papers to help them get away, true they were dressed like servants while one of marie antoinette's loyal friends pretended to be a Russian aristocrat so a luxury styled coach is not so foolish.
As we see, this is another event in history that wii prove my point. My point is that no king or government can bring peace and security. Six thousand years on the planet and no government was able to bring peace. The only government that can actually do that is Jehovah God's Kingdom which will come in a short time. This kingdom will destroy all the governments in this world and then restore paradise for those who were loyall to Him. This kingdom will never be brought to ruin.
There's a story in the north of france that louis' was recognised when he attempted to pay with a louis d'or at the inn - his face matched the one on the coin. Probably apochryphal...
Well, you know what I think the real killer of that escape plan was? It was that he showed his passport to that town official instead of making a fake passport to show him. Anyone trying to escape the country under an alias would think of that!
Actually, they were traveling with one of Marie Antoinettes ladies-in-waiting. This woman was a noble class woman helping them with the escape. Louis and Marie were supposed to pass off as this noblewoman's slaves. (Not that they were succesful). The carriage was way to fancy and huge...
@teamxxxsleep he wanted to get caught though. He just thought people would feel sorry for him but they didn't at all. He didnt realize how radical the country was.
@teamxxxsleep That's pretty much the story of Louis XVI's reign. If the French had actually had a competant monarch, things might have been different.
@teamxxxsleep Well according to the video, but this is a dramatization and I think people should remember this. I don't know all of the facts, but in my opinion if you were trying to come off as a genuine servant or slave, you wouldn't be traveling so extravagantly. But perhaps in that time, even if you were the servant of an aristocrat or high official you would travel in such conditions? Either way, Louis and his family fucked up and they paid dearly for it. I love history.
@teamxxxsleep and take off all that clothing making them look like monarchs also can't you jsut fake a signature like write a different name if this documentary is right on how their escape really was there are many things I would do different to escape than them.
Of course he was an idiot! I mean, they had planned the escape for weeks and he even had a carriage built. But instead of building something small and fast, he bought a huge monstrosity that caught every eye's attention! Also, on the way to Austria, h thought he was safe and even stopped for a picnic with his family. He was completely senile!!
these royal scum got what they deserved! i love the french more and more every day. bring back the guillotine lets get the bankers, corportist, and ultra-greedy this time!
@gunsofbrixton1975 They deserved to live and stay in power you swine! France has ruined their Monarchy and they will only have themselves to blame France was a powerful country with a Monarchy! and Louise did try to solve the bankrupt problem but those fool's became power hungry! Not the Royals fault rather the commaner's fault!
Long Live the Monarchy. I don't know about the Aristocracy. In fact the entire Middle ages political ideology is wrong. It would be better with the ideology of Antiquity. Damn Germans just came and butchered everyone.
@gunsofbrixton1975 this particular french revolution destroyed their country in hard economic times, and spurred the beginning of communism and strife throughout europe for centuries. This is the last thing we need now...
@TopSniper09 your wrong the french revolution was very good for european peasents. Look at europe in 2010. A moaning peasent population blaming immigrants for their financial woes. Protests in european countries due to the same elitists making slaves out of the poor. You need to wiseup because soon the developing world wont allow its exploitation and its europes peasents who will suffer most then .
@TopSniper09 So you're saying it would've been better for Europe if the French people would've just shut the hell up and starved to death from lack of food?
@Metallic7Dust You saved me from having to answer, I agree with your response, theres lots of stupid people here who never suffered like the people of France suffered under the rule of the monarchs, they just worship the glamor of the monarchs but if they were living at that time they would be starving with not even bread to buy.
I never knew Rosspheire: was against the war between France and Austria intresting! This just proves my view that he wasn't "as evil" as people say of course he was responsalbe for thousands of deaths but most of the revolitanaries where and the monarch was corrupt
Interesting the historian says that nobody has ever been able to say whether the guillotine hurt. A scientist in the last century actually asked a condemned man if he would agree to respond immediately after the execution, if he was still alive, with eyelid blinking. Six thousand years on the planet and no government was able to bring peace. The only government that can actually do that is Jehovah God's Kingdom which will come in a short time. This kingdom will destroy all the governments in this world and then restore paradise for those who were loyall to Him. This kingdom will never be brought to ruin.

why are most monarchs so retarded? you must work and provide for the people to have power.

There's a story in the north of france that louis' was recognised when he attempted to pay with a louis d'or at the inn - his face matched the one on the coin. Probably apochryphal...
brianoc22 1 year ago
Well, you know what I think the real killer of that escape plan was? It was that he showed his passport to that town official instead of making a fake passport to show him. Anyone trying to escape the country under an alias would think of that!
CariPR 2 years ago 6
I think the killer of the plan was that the royals took a direct passage like a road not a forrest surounding the road. But Luis wasnt a god planer.

i thought of the same thing,

@CariPR Again were talking about a really stupid guy here. Also he doesn't have an idea what he's doing and somehow thought people were loyal to him.

He probably thought that border guards would be loyal to him

There's advantage in limiting violence in revolution as much as possible. Its necessary in self defense, but, beyond that, it shouldn't be used.

Indeed...perhaps if he were to really pass himself off as a slave...he wouldn't have used the royal coach wagon? Very foolish.
teamxxxsleep 2 years ago 100
Actually, they were traveling with one of Marie Antoinettes ladies-in-waiting. This woman was a noble class woman helping them with the escape. Louis and Marie were supposed to pass off as this noblewoman's slaves. (Not that they were succesful). The carriage was way to fancy and huge...
vampirechic102 2 years ago
@teamxxxsleep he wanted to get caught though. He just thought people would feel sorry for him but they didn't at all. He didnt realize how radical the country was.

@teamxxxsleep That's pretty much the story of Louis XVI's reign. If the French had actually had a competant monarch, things might have been different.
Tony2826 1 year ago
@teamxxxsleep Well according to the video, but this is a dramatization and I think people should remember this. I don't know all of the facts, but in my opinion if you were trying to come off as a genuine servant or slave, you wouldn't be traveling so extravagantly. But perhaps in that time, even if you were the servant of an aristocrat or high official you would travel in such conditions? Either way, Louis and his family fucked up and they paid dearly for it. I love history.
xxblodlustxx 1 year ago
@teamxxxsleep He was passing for servant not a slave.
ImperialGuard9001 1 year ago
@teamxxxsleep and take off all that clothing making them look like monarchs also can't you jsut fake a signature like write a different name if this documentary is right on how their escape really was there are many things I would do different to escape than them.

louis is an idiot lmfao
he truelly isn't a leader... anyone with an iq of 75 would be smart enough to use a differebt name.
cpsretartedmuch 2 years ago
Of course he was an idiot! I mean, they had planned the escape for weeks and he even had a carriage built. But instead of building something small and fast, he bought a huge monstrosity that caught every eye's attention! Also, on the way to Austria, h thought he was safe and even stopped for a picnic with his family. He was completely senile!!

TopSniper09 1 year ago 17
@TopSniper09 your wrong the french revolution was very good for european peasents. Look at europe in 2010. A moaning peasent population blaming immigrants for their financial woes. Protests in european countries due to the same elitists making slaves out of the poor. You need to wiseup because soon the developing world wont allow its exploitation and its europes peasents who will suffer most then .
sexymalcom1970 1 year ago
@TopSniper09 So you're saying it would've been better for Europe if the French people would've just shut the hell up and starved to death from lack of food?
Metallic7Dust 1 year ago
@Metallic7Dust You saved me from having to answer, I agree with your response, theres lots of stupid people here who never suffered like the people of France suffered under the rule of the monarchs, they just worship the glamor of the monarchs but if they were living at that time they would be starving with not even bread to buy.
