@Coptic78 (1)This film takes place before the discovery of America and is'nt about an event in American history,but is a idealized,but in many way true event in european history--the rise of the Spanish Empire and the attempt by England to survive Spain's ambitions. (2) Also,since this film is made in 1940 when England is fighting for its life against another power,Nazi Germany,the film is meant to inspire the hope & courage of the British people in the face of a new threat to their liberty.

Flora Robson was especially good in her role of Queen Elizabeth I in this film. I suspect that this performance may have influenced Helen Mirren in her own portrayal of the " Virgin Queen ".
