Why do you go totally around the shape? when using layers you can use the buckettool. If you copy the line layer and remove the white areas you can put in color on the layer beneath... you always have the copy linelayer on top. you then only have to fill the shape on top at the openings. That saves time doesn't it?

For coloring in the shapes of the characters I use the airbrush around the edges.. then I use the lasso tool to fill the bulk of the shape. Lasso, then fill with foreground color.
