@lemonade607 You mean when LWT should have taken over from Thames, but the problem was how can LWT show programmes from the rest of the network and ITN when the strike took place?
The music is taken from the library of BBC test card music. I don't mind these, 'reproductions', but they're not entirely accurate in their content. I don't remember the exactly circumstances of how ITV went on strike, but I'm sure it wasn't halfway through The News at Ten. I think they just didn't start up one morning and displayed the famous blue screen with, 'INDEPENDENT TELEVISON', across the top. No music, just deathly silence and that screen for the best part of 3 months.
@JFredUK The strike was triggered as a result of a pay claim by the ACTT that they felt that the ITV companies were asking for an increase in their wages following the BBC strike during the 1978 Winter of Discontent and technicians at Thames refused to carry on operating the service at 10.07pm on 6th August 1979, and then other ITV companies (except Channel) followed suit by 10th August.
@JFredUK - I can remember it almost exactly as it happened. It was during News at Ten, and during a clip of film where Margaret Thatcher (the PM at the time) was being interviewed, there was sudden screen distortion, then about 20 seconds of blank screen. Then, the slide that read "INDEPENDENT TELEVISION: We are sorry that programmes have been interrupted. This is because of an industrial dispute. Transmissions will start again as soon as possible".
@GeneRobertson Do you happen to have an exact recording of what had happened on video? I remember being 2.7 years old at the time of the dispute and sat in my mother's bedroom with the television on and remember that the caption was displayed. Was the caption in letraset font or was it in the computer-generated caption style?
@cwilliams1976 The caption was in a computer generated font against a blue background. A couple of hours after that the next slide read "INDEPENDENT TELEVISION: We are sorry to tell you that there will be no more programmes on this channel today. We will give you more information tomorrow". Unfortunately, I don't have a recording of this, but would love to see one.
@GeneRobertson There wouldn't be any more programmes if ITV were to close down that night anyway!!!! Was this second slide again transmitted in the more familiar computer-generated font or was it transmitted in like an ANCHAR-style font?
@cwilliams1976 This second slide was transmitted continuously for the next two weeks against a deathly silence (no background music or anything). It was also in the same computer-generated font.
@GeneRobertson In the mornings when Thames was on the air, the IBA test card faded into an ANCHAR-style caption which read: INDEPENDENT TELEVISION Because of the current industrial dispute we are sorry that there are no programmes on this channel today. There is an industrial dispute. We will give you further information when we can. This caption was displayed during the daytime periods only but the computer-generated caption was transmitted thereafter.
@Lindelamare No it isn't.
