  • Hot Damn !! Now I know, where Marshall Crenshaw got this song from , that is on his awesome 2nd studio album , Field Day ! I never knew that it was a cover of a classic old doo-wop song until I discovered and heard the original here ! I just thought that Crenshaw had written the tune ! He does a great cover of it , and has damn good taste when it comes to picking songs from other artists to perform ! What a really cool and original tune by the Jive Five !!

  • my father casey spencer is a tenor in the jive five and lead vocalist eugene pitt is my uncle.i heard these songs every day growing up in the lat 60's to the 70's.even though my pops wrote "i'm a happy man" "what time is it " and never never never"were my favorites.my father was away most week-ends on tour and i couldn't understand why.but after a lifetime of music listening and playing doo-wop again i fully understand.and the luv they get world wide is amazing, thanx 4 the support everybody!

  • @bigmott2000

I grew up in that era - I am very impressed by your family, must have been great to grow up in that environment. My mother was a classical violinist - I had to hide to listen to Doo-Wop. Their harmonics are phenomenal, this is Doo-Wop at its best. I was very happy that someone posted their return to the scene as I had not seen them "live". Please pass on my appreciation to your family for hours of relaxing music and melodies. Sincerely, Lance

  • @bigmott2000 You are one lucky Person to have these great singers in Your family and to have shared in all their greatness. Please thank them for Me for all the great moments (i'm 64 yrs old and a big doowop fan) I have had listening to their music

  • @kuriouslee could you please tell me what year this song came out?? seems i remember my dad and mom dancing to this..talking about how great this music was...judy.

  • @bigmott2000

How lucky you are to have had these talented people near to you. I also grew up (in the Bronx) in the 60's and 70's.

  • Somebody should ask Obama what year is it.

  • 3 more hours to go!!

    Love this!

  • I heard a brief snippet of this in an episode of the Sopranos recently & it just reminded me of years gone by so had to retrieve it & add it to my playlist. Thanks my man.

  • If Dansel Washington could sing, he would sound like this! sexy and smooth

  • this song reminds me of getting ready for my first school dance , a sock dance in 7th grade. A big jukebox in the gymnasium played all the doo wop music with the lights dimmed.. funny how I can remember that.. I can hardly remember what I did last week!

  • Everything they did was sooooo cool -- I also love 'Never, Never' what a bad ass song!

  • Fantastic !!! Brought back such great memories. Thank you.

  • 2 people know the time :P

  • What time is it? Its time for DooWops is there any other time? As Leonardo left a everlasting impression of the Mona Lisa well the Jive 5 have left their everlasting impression as well with this magnificent classic to embrace our ears for our lifetime and for others to enjoy as well. Marvelous

  • Unbelievable how great this music is. I have been listening to it for over 40 years and never get tired of it. I know everything changes but how great sounds like this ever went out of style is beyond me. The great Doo-Wop groups of the 50's like the Jive Five were just pure magic.

  • Yup, it's that sound again, it's called HARMONY in it's pruist form!

  • I saw these guys twice while in my teens. They were simply great. What more can I say. This song is their best, although "My True Story" and "I'm a Happy Man" are tied for a very close second. What a time this was!

  • One of the greatest doo wop songs ever. Hard to believe it written by the Strangeloves, of "I Want Candy" fame (who incidentally were the Sheep on "Hide and Seek" and wrote "My Boyfriends Back")

  • Heard this song on the sopranos and have loved it ever since.

  • This was REAL music, unlike today, where supposed "artists" make more noise with fake instruments. God I wish I was around when this came out. What a voice.

  • Doo Wop Gold lovein it

  • I'd like to meet the two nuts that gave this song a "dislike".

  • lots of memories here

  • The JIVE e Brooklyn new york!! Eugen Pitt one of the greatest singers of all time MY True Story I'ma happy man ect saw them many times...

  • This song does give me chills too. Just great harmonies and lead and real suspense even though the song usually ends with Time For LOVE the song is so great it seems it might have different endings. And my heart is beating fast .. the moment is here at last.. time for love and then some great fade-out doo wop. Masterful and doo wop should have had as long a reign as Rap and the world would be a better place if doo wop was still going strong today. Sermon over.

  • IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS GROUP IN PERSON YOU DENIED YOURSELF A TREAT . THEY PUT THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO PERFORMING

  • I heard this for the first time in that THe Sopranos episode. I'm sure I heard it before that episode aired, but I probably just didn't recognize it. I love this music.

  • I re-discovered this again about 10 years ago on WHAS Joe Donovan's midnight program. Plain & simple, it just doesn't get any better than this.

Gene & the JF are a true blessing to the senses, a full 48 years later!

  • this is definitley back in the day street corner harmonywhat happen to the music

  • i should've been born in '47, not '77.

  • @herrtrigger77 Well then, you have just declared yourself to be a "throwback". Take pride in this....you are eclectic and cerebral. If you're not familiar with the term...look it up.

  • saw them again, this Labor day at lead east, they still put on a memorable show. they still have the voices and energy to bring the crowd up out of their seats. hope to do it again

  • Boy i forgot about this song. I had this record.

  • I love this song!! I heard it many times when I was going steady with my hubby. He said he'd count the hours till he would be at my door. This is really a GREAT BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!!

  • Easily the best Doo Wop song of all time. So grateful I can remember when this song was new. Truly good times.

  • reminds me of the white elephant they would always be there

  • Oh man this song gives me the chills, reminds me of a great scene in sopranos....Dr. Melfi talking with the russian comare's voice "is cannoli still tired?"

  • Powerful song. Great singer. Great harmony.

  • I love this song so nice.

  • What part of 1962 was "What Time Is It?" a hit?

  • This song peaked October 13, was on the charts for 5 weeks and ranked 425 for the year. Data from Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual. Is a good song for sure. ☺ ☺ ☺ ♪♫

  • I remember playing this record while I was getting dressed to go out on a date with a young lady who I would later marry. We will be celebrating our 41st Wedding Anniversary in about two months.

A member of the Laura Lamar High School class of 1964 located in Homer City, PA.

  • this is the first song i heard the day i entered sing sing prison

  • @unto789 I hope you're out.

  • Thats how I found this tune.. from the Sopranos scene I thought David Chase was very creative with that scene it was intended to be sexy and came out that way as well as funny it was said that Gandolfini was actually cracking up at the lip syncing and you can see it in the scene

DOC is So Hot I think in that same episode we get to see her naked LOL

The jive Five "What Time Is It" - Pax Soprana s01e06 <--- see it here on you tube

  • appears in possibly one of the funniest scenes in The Sopranos

  • Love this song - Thank you I tried to find this song for at least 20 years but forgot who sang it. Jive five, one of the best. this and I'm a happy man

  • Love this song - Thank you

  • I love this song. Thanks for posting it. It reminds me of my earlier days when I was getting ready for a date.

  • What a great song, one of the best by the jive 5

  • I love this oldie.

  • Sounds great. Had it in my head and needed to hear it. Still fresh like it was out yesterday.

  • I remember this song when I was getting ready for a date, drinking to get some courage, and then the COUNTDOWN. Oh, the good old days!!!

  • I love this song. It's like standing on a rooftop and looking out at the stars and the lights of the city. A song from the heavens.

  • Great song, my favorite Doo-Wop group

  • This song turns me on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • s many little bitties in this as Lennon would say...joyful from beginning to end...and I think the beatles may have heard this...

  • Love it - love it

  • What time is it? It's time for everyone to get aboard, and listen to Doo-Wop, the greatest sounding music to one's ear.

  • @stripemister The most beautiful musical instrument is the human voice and voices. Gene Pitt & the JF will live forever. For me, this is their BEST song. What time is it, it's time for more great songs like this to be reissued & (more important) be re-broadcast!

  • have always loved this. have always loved the jive five....thanks for posting this......

  • Love it

  • Fatima, My love it is always time for us and our love...

  • CAN YOU PLEASE POST"YOU" BY THEM?

  • Group best known for 'my true story' gives us a doo wop tune that really speaks of the pompetus of young love. Never heard the crenshaw version, in fact, i don't even remember him doing it.

  • Crenshaw did it on his second album, "Field Day". It's the second from last song, and he does a fabulous job with it. Very different from this version, but both versions are magical.

  • A true classic recording from Brooklyn's own Jive Five. Thanks for posting.

  • What a great song with staying power.Go to any Carolinas beach club along the grand strand and you would think it 1962 all over again. From Juke boxes to carolia beach bands. This song continues to be one of the best 47 years later...

  • What a powerful song - Eugene Pitts voice is so powerful and melodious. The arrangement of the background harmonics is very nicely orchestrated, that song gets tears in my eyes. Reminds me of the feelings I experience with the Flamingo's "only have eyes for you". The work that went into the melody and music is phenomenal - a top quality product.

Thank you for sharing this with the community. Lancelot

  • This song gives me chills. You really can't find songs like this today that have meaning and are articulate enough to understand. I sure wish someone would be bold enough to bring this style of singing back. if they can revive old fashions, why can't they revive old singing styles?

  • Mayer Hawthorne

  • @winsome1235 Why not indeed? All those hip hop & rap artists--can they sing and produce something as beautiful and lasting as this? Give it a try, guys.

  • @winsome1235

I agree with you. Why can't we revive old meaning songs like this that touch the heart? I just love them.

  • @winsome1235 Mayer Hawthorne is trying....

  • @winsome1235 by black artists nonetheless.

  • Thanks for the memories. What great times these were, and what great songs- real music. I'll enjoy this frequently.

  • Awesome song!!! Thanks for posting it.

  • I showed my daughter this video (age 17), she said she can't think of one modern day song that can tell a story where you would picture in your mind every step of what the singer is saying.

  • many great doowop singers including eugene pitt, jimmy weston the danleers, and j maestro from the crests real singers not like today i count the number i like these day's on one hand!!!!!!!!

  • Great songs like these never die nor do they get played enough. Marshall Crenshaw did a pretty good version .. but this is the best.

  • no one has a voice like eugene

  • Nothing ever will beat this.

  • Great Pgh. classic, Eugene Pitt how good is he,

  • It's been said:

That when DooWop groups get together to listen to DooWop....They listen to The Jive Five.

Simply stated: There were none better.

    Eugene Pitt ruled.

  • I saw them do this song a few times but the one I remember the most was at the Palladium on 14th St. The lights were off and they had white gloves on with black lamps illuminating them and they were doing the clock movements. The palladium was originally built and called the Acadamy of music and was made for its acustics. So take it from there. They rocked hard that nite.

  • I saw the Jive Five years back when I was still in NJ at the Richard Nader reunion. This group didn't miss a beat. It was like they were singing it back in the good ole days.

    Love this group.

  • None better than this one. Thanks so much for the post.

  • EUGENE PITTS is the lead singer. One of the best lead singer's of all time!!

  • Great Memories. Those were such easier times.

  • I agree they were great memories, back in the 60's!!!!

  • This song reminds me of when I was going steady, and I would hear this song as my steady was coming over. He said this song was him getting ready to see me.

  • You are so right. I used this song as a guide for getting ready. People today do not dress up.

  • Yeah, people today are no where near us back in the 60's that's for sure!!

  • The falsetto in the background is just haunting. I love this song. It reminds me of the first date I had with a special lady many years ago.

  • LOVE THIS SONG! I especially like when its used in the sopranos

  • Marshall Crenshaw did a nice cover of this on his 1983 album Field Day - - it's perfectly positioned as the penultimate song. Worth checking out!

  • yes! thanks for that comment, EVERYONE who loves great pop music should listen to that crenshaw lp.

  • I Love this song. What memories it evokes. Thanks for posting it.

  • LOVE THIS SONG !!

    GGG 59

  • I love this song , I was just at a cruise night , And the DJ played this song , And I didn't know who it was , So had to ask the DJ , He told me it was the Jive Five .

But my next question is , what year did this

    come out ?

  • The Jive Five recorded "What Time is It" 1962 and "Three Golden Rings" where they had a hit with "I'm a Happy Man" 1965.

    GGG 59

  • The best of the best!

  • I remember playing this record while I was getting ready to go out on a date with my future wife. Brings back alot of good memories.

  • We didn't realize back then just how priceless and well written this song is. It tells a detailed story with fantastic music and sounds. Now compared to the modern music we hear, we leaned that years ago we should have listened much closer.

  • One of the best on stage performing groups ever!

  • Go Brooklyn

  • MY FAVORITE DOO WOP SONG, thanks for posting!

    GGG 59

  • love this tune, i heard it on an episode of Sopranos and can't get it out of my head.

  • This harmonic Brooklyn group is more well-known for their big 1961 hit, "My True Story," but this is a great one, too. But this brings back great memories from 1962.
