If people can't even understand you at all then it would make it very hard to get a good job, so the effort to improve your speaking voice is to your own advantage. A subtle accent is fine tho, even refreshing.

Just like she says, accent reduction really makes a difference.  It helps to understand others, to be understood, to be seen as smart as you are and it also improves your spelling.

I experienced a big difference after taking phonetic classes.

I m from Russia. I came to the US and everyoen there thought I was born in America. Onde day I went to some cafe and I wanted to order... but the girl was Spanish and could understand the word! and she was expected to received orders from the customers! that was not funny and I had to talk to ther manager to order some food :)
