You might be interested to know that Guy Hamilton, a film director who was a friend of dad's, told me that he, dad and John Barry were in his London apartment one night and he (Guy Hamilton) played them "Mac The Knife" sung by Lotte Lenya.. Apparently, immediately after hearing her voice, dad and Les went away and wrote Goldfinger!
@Maianewley After all these years, "Goldfinger" is still one of the greatest songs ever written. The chord changes, the lyrics - really hold up. And the song is just as powerful today as back in 1964. I'm still learning so much about your Dad. I had no idea he had written so much great music. Thankfully, YouTube is giving us exposure to things we weren't aware of.
My personal preference for the song is Newley's version. Bassey's is good, but to my personal taste, tends to grate on my nerves after a bit. This suave, sophisticated tone is much more pleasing to my ear. For the film, however, I understand why they chose the Bassey format (Plus, most Bond themes were sung by women anyway)
HUGE Newley fan, but I side with Bassey crowd here. Tony's version is subtle, sings with a little humor, but for whatever reason Shirley B. belting this one out makes for the QUINTESSENTIAL Bond theme. You really knew something cool was going to happen on-screen.
Newley sings it like an actor and Bassey does a total belt-out. Newley could belt too but for this song he chose subtlety. Why compare? It's great to have both.

Boy, he really wails at the end. Wish it was more up in the mix.

I was amazed when I first heard this version of the song. Like everything Mr. Newley did from 'Cranks' on, it is truly brilliant.

Goldfinger was just one of many very popular songs written by Anthony Newley. I had never heard him sing it, though. Thanks for posting.
