"And anybody in the comments who says that it isn't music will personnally get me coming around of their house and punching them in the face." It isn't music. Now come visit me, skip the punching part, i'll make some tea and we're gonna have a lovely chat featuring your amazing brain, you fascinating human being.
@timeladyandshazamm97 I find this interesting. I just googled synesthesia and I had no idea what to expect. It is a fascinating thing and I find it intriguing how you say you had trouble with learning to play piano whilst Hélène Grimauld and Franz Liszt both has synesthesia. I know that stuff like this varies from person to person but I didn't think it'd vary that much. Yeah, random input over.. Sorry Iif I've offended you, it wasn't my purpose :/
Cage's piece wasn't music, it was performance art. I'm not bashing it, though I personally would be pissed if I worked hard to be in that orchestra and I just had to sit there.
If I say 4.33 isn't music, will Tom come to my house or my mum's house. If he's going to punch my mum, I'd suggest he went to her house, but if he insists on coming to my house, he's welcome to punch my landlady. Actually wouldn't mind that at all. Just be careful, because she's over 80 years old, and she might break her hip or something. Then again, I wouldn't say that 4.33 isn't music, it's just weird, and weird is good. So, I guess Tom Milsom isn't going to punch anyone because of me..
@HandfullOfMinutes actually we're not that lucky. I couldn't learn to play piano because I saw notes as colours as well as letters as colours, so when I tried to remember which note was which it was too confusing because they were named after letters that were different colours.
@timeladyandshazamm97 Fair enough! As I say, the viewpoint of a non-synesthetic is always going to be a bit naive compared to that of someone who actually is one.
@HandfulOfMinutes Even though synesthesia makes mental math, music, and foreign language difficult, it does make music and words more beautiful. Yeah, we can see it as unlucky, but I see it as putting in a little extra work to get a bigger reward. I just picked up guitar, and I have to put in a little more effort, but I get beautiful sounds and colors as a result.
@HandfulOfMinutes uuh,it pretty cool tbh because iv not always had it not since i got PANDAS when i was about 9, and its fun experimenting with my brain, but for a while a was really scared of purple because i associated it with pain. but yeah you dont even notice often.
@bluepebblecat That's fascinating! I've always felt that synesthetics are lucky in a way, but then I suppose what seems fantastic to me must be pretty normal to them - am I right?
Ok as a dancer I have to say that the reason right of spring caused so much uproar was that the people who who went to see it were expecting a classical ballet and it was so far from that, that people just went crazy (not the good kind) and...yeah...that's the story.
I don't like John Cage. He was a bit too much of a nutter. So Tom doesn't have to push me that far to get me to say that 4:33 isn't a piece of music. Now come up to Scotland, to my house so I can kidnap you and listen to you talk all day! :L your voice is gorgeous! :)
I wish I was as smart as Tom... I'd ace the general knowledge part of my piano exam. Which makes me wonder if it really is general knowledge to when Debussy died, or the amount of studies that Stephen Heller wrote.
Webern = mindfuck. It's apparent that he has real musical skill, but he's too focused on fucking up on purpose just to be avant garde and different. It's a shame, really.
Apparently 4'33 was inspired when Mr Cage found himself in an underground room of some sort, I forget what exactly - a wine cellar or something similar perhaps. He found that even when he sat entirely still in a room removed from the external environment, there were still sounds, and found that he could hear the faint echo of his own heartbeat. He came to the conclusion that noise is everywhere, and that any noise can be music, and thus the concept for 4'33 was born.
Aaand I ran out of space so here's my opinon on silence as a musical concept. Silence is unarguably effective within music, but by removing the notes around it we remove the contrast and thus make it somewhat harder to appreciate!
4'33 is definitely a beautiful idea (although not an original one according to wikipedia, o fountain of knowledge) and a piece with just one or two notes or one big chord would have such a different feeling!
4'33 is a great great idea! and I love that tom talked about it :D we're studying Post Modernism right now and John Cage ... Tom Milsom is awesome :) more more more
i know you and alex day mentioned something about a blog tv anime class. Would you instead teach it on this or maybe music theory? you seem to know alot about the topic and are an excellent teacher.
Ha! I noticed that too and what makes it extra odd is that, due to my heritage, I have a strong British accent whenever I'm around others who have the same.
