A flag is a piece of cloth. If you conflate the symbol and what it represents, you will be easily manipulated by people who draw your attention towards the symbol, in order to draw it away from what they're doing to what the symbol represents.

What does this country stand for, exactly? Last I checked countries were just patches of dirt that people used as a means of arbitrarily dividing themselves. A country can't really "stand" for anything if all of the people within that country are different, just as a political party can't stand for anything if none of its members can agree on a single issue. Americans are just a collection of people who happen to live in the same general area -- nothing more, nothing less.

The people who died in wars were stupid enough to sign the contract (except in the case of drafts), so it was entirely their decision to risk death by fighting in the war in the first place. Switzerland hasn't participated in a war in roughly 150 years (200 years if you exclude their civil war).
Costa Rica abolished its military, and it hasn't had a war in the 60 years since then (unlike its more militaristic neighbors).
Andorra hasn't had a war in 700 years. They don't have a military either, and they're a free country.
Japan hasn't had a war in 60 years. We did demand that they send a few troops for "peacekeeping" missions, but Japan itself has not been at war.

Japan's population is 127,000,000. I'd hardly consider that "small." There are more countries than the ones I listed; I just listed the ones that were interesting to me (such as the 700-year peace in Andorra) and I was limited to 500 characters. Look up the other peaceful countries yourself.
