And the singers dad was writing an autobigoraphy about his adventures abroad in portugal so it was like "Portugal and the Man"

So they went with it.

All of their favorite bands were named after one person, but they didn't want to name it after one of their bandmembers, so they named it Portugal. In order to clarify that it wasn't the country, they added in "The Man." Their full name is Portugal. The Man and the Approaching AIRballoons. Portugal. The Man isn't really a person, so their name is kinda technically The Approaching AIRballoons and that's how they're credited in the liner notes for Censored Colors.
