Nice review Josh. I found that the Otterbox defender case is excellent but the belt holster is useless. It did not stay on my belt but was too easily slid off. Having the clip on the side is definately a pain; It sticks out too much and catches on stuff. Otterbox should redesign it. It probably would be better if it was kept in place only on three sides. The site has an amazing 7 minutes test video that will blow your mind! That things makes OB and BHC look like mall kiosk $5 toys LOL :) You should dream up some reliability tests for the Griffin!

The camera is not left open on the otterbox, if you have a good look at the case, you may find that there is a small plastic sheet covering the camera.

If you wash the silcone cover in dawn or simple green it will remove the oils that it gets from your hands and will go back to its original shape and in my case even fit better than it did out of the factory box.This applies to all silicone cases.The maker of this vid refered to the cases as sexy and seemed to be more concerned with looks more than function.
I think the Ballistic case you have is the cheaper version because it looks less protective compared to mine. Also the markings are different which leads me to believe you either have lower level unit, and older one, or maybe even a knockoff.

I have a Ballistic and I'd say it's 99.9% all it can be..You have to me a moron to drop your phone in the water... and why carry it in ur pocket if you have the case and holser on? The otterbox has those plastic studs on the edges and they chip off really easily if you do actually drop the phone. Also, i tore the silicone on my old otterbox pulling it out of my jeans because its very cheap material

Purchased the Ballistic for iphone 4 in Aug 2010 and they have added a cover for the earphone port. I broke the clip on the holster and have to purchase a replacement holster (one year warranty only good with a receipt). Debating whether to pay for replacement holster & shipping or buy a new Otterbox instead.

I have both of these cases. When I got the iPhone 4 I was talked into the Ballistic case, the case itself is good, the black silicone cover needs a total re-design. The cover just fits way too loosely. If it was up to me, think I would use stiffer silicone so the cover fits like you would want a pair of driving gloves on your hands, nice and snug. I don't like the way the plugs fit either. Too sloppy.
I got the otterbox defender for iphone 3gs/3g and it's gr8 the apple logo is covered with plastic along with the screen, light sensor and the camera hole. The only prob is that the polycarbonate plastic is very delacate because there are a bunch of ovals sticking out. I have scarch marks on it and a dent and scapes on 3 parts of it because I droped it alot but that's just common sense not to drop it from 2 stories lol

hey gotta question, after installing the first part of your case, did you noticed that the plastic feels loose? I have the black version and my case feels kinda loose on one side and the other is tight. I also noticed the top part of the case where the screen is, there's a tiny hole one on each side of the case. Just curious if you noticed it. Maybe I just got a bad one..
No I've not use the kracken but they've said it's about as close to the otterbox as you can get, about the holster I like the protection they offer but don't like the look that's why when I work I put the holster in my pocket and I ply ukulele so no I will not be trimming my nails anything else I can clear up and thanks for watching
I like the Deffender alot. And the clip is amazing. I did a front flip off my bike the other day and i was wearing my phone on my hip, Stayed in and protected. And with my luck i FOUND the outer skin of the Ballistic. And i didnt know what it was at the time, but if i put the defender in the outerskin, the case is a tank.
The otterbox defender does have a screen protector which is still nicer than the ballistics screen protector, they use some kind of anti-glare screen protector on the o.b. and they seem to have solved the watermark problem
My OB SUCKS!!! Silicone will NOT stay on. Otterbox knows this, I emailed them, and IF you have your recpt they will send you an new cover. I don't, so I'm stuck with this junk. Bought one since I had one on my 3G, and this is pure crap. I don't trust this case at all. It seems like they rushed a case out to have one. The flaps are almost impossible to close, they don't want to stay closed. Don't know why they tried to re-invent the wheel. They has the best one out there.
At the time the otterbox did seal it up better simply by coverig the headphone jackals yes that did keep the saw dust out unless you've got your phone upside down in which case the speakers would let some in, now the have fixed some of these problems and released various colors, with the ballistics now have my phone in a red one they still have the thin silicone at the top but throb was getting lose all around took it slot longerbut it still happened, ballistics is back on top for me
Appreciate the comparison, but you say many times the otterbox does 'a better job of sealing it up', but it has just as many open holes. Neither case is airtight, but the ballistic does a much better job of sealing the camera. How is your otterbox going to avoid sawdust?
My otter-box seems to still be okay but the silicone does at times pop out of place and if any of the flaps are open it doesn't hold very well at all, they really should go back to the old design
The Ballistic case I picked up at the AT&T store last night has a flap on the silicone cover that covers the headphone jack, but leaves the noise canceling mic uncovered. It is just like a smaller version of the flap that covers the ringer switch. They don't appear to have addressed your comment about the thin strip of rubber being all that is holding the front of the top piece together. If the baby powder trick fixes the "oil slick", I'll probably keep the Ballistic.
in the otter boxes case i particular I don't think it safe because the clip is right in the center which kind of causes it to just flop around, but that is my opinion when working I can place a holster backwards in my pocket and it protects the screen keeps the phone handy and doesn't leave you looking like a holster wearing ---- but thanks for the comment hopefully it helped but no usually they're not worn in the pocket
Great video. I like the side by side analysis of the two cases. I work in the field as well and have dropped the phone with the otterbox case on concrete from about 5 feet and no damage. Also the construction dust does not penetrate the case to the phone itself.
Yes you can still use the ballistic without the sillicone shell and that does cut down on a good bit of the bulk, and the iPhone still remains protected it is about the same size as the defender case without the sillicone but it almost feels smaller I think that is because of the height difference the otterbox almost seems shorter and fatter while the ballistic seems taller and skinnier, I hope that answers your question

The camera is not left open on the otterbox, if you have a good look at the case, you may find that there is a small plastic sheet covering the camera.

Silicone is pulling away in the upper right corner of my OB case. Does not seem to be holding the shape. Miss the snugness of my 3G/3GS case.
