The comments in Italian and German declare that Netrebko is lacking in expressiveness. I think both comments are absurd. What I want to hear in opera is "music". Netrebko sings the right pitches consistently and maintains tonal focus throughout. That matters! Listen to Caballe, Tebaldi, Callas, Sutherland. None controls her timbres. All of them hit out of tune notes. All of them scoop into notes. All of them had ugly vibrato, used to "expand" their tone rather than as an expressive ornament.
She's very good but doesn't have the coloratura of the other great Violetta's such as Gheorgui or Callas. Suitalby dramatic in the legato arias like this one, but not a fan of her sempre libera.
@rclarke6 unless you have a doctoral degree (plus a master's and artist's diploma) in opera performance, have sung all over the world and have many students currently singing all over the world, I'd keep your obtuse comments to yourself.

This aria is one of my favourites in all world's opera! I absolutely don't care about some snobbish opera connoisseurs' criticizing of this performance and all I want to say is that it is touched me very much. And be sure, it has nothing to the fact she is my compatriot.
inasmuch as that Traviata is right at the top of my opera list along with l'elisr and puritani and in general the genre of romantic storytelling in opera , i find it equaly disturbing that these purists out there will always find something to criticize regardless as to who, where, when or what is being performed. My advice to ignore these dumb S O B's and just enjoy the performance for what it is. :) Dramatic storytelling
Ms Netrobko always sings with an excellent voice, but her acting is detached and lifeless. Here, in an aria where Violetta contemplates her death, this slighty-zombified style fits perfectly. This performance is superb in both voice and expression

Netrebko is FABULOUS! What a voice! What stage presence! Her delivery is superb. I also love her Russian songs. Her "Tatiana" in Eugene Onegin was out-of-this-world.

She's got the emotion spot on although she's sometimes a little sharp but who gives when she puts on a performance like that... plus her top A is spoooot on intonation-wise! =) brava!!

@Anna9576 Of interest, opera was an attempt to replicate the experience of the ancient Greeks. All those plays we read by Aeschylus, Euripides, etc., were sung. If you look at the plays, you will see chorus after chorus. Those were REAL choruses, just as is seen in "modern" opera. I quite agree about the insults and hope folks will enjoy one another's company a bit more.

Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.
I find it so interesting. In a world where science and progress have evolved us to cellular phones, medical technology and a revolutionary way of life we have lost the ability to artistically express ourselves like this. I don't understand it....why can't art like this still exist and be popular in our society?
Simple. Because this was a bourgouise art from the 19th century. If a modern composer made music like this today, they would get murdered by the critics for living in the past. We have to keep moving on, yes? If modern listeners have a much more primitive understanding of harmony and Western-style singing, we have a FAR greater understanding of rhythm & atonality. This IS beautiful, but it is a museum piece.
Netrebkos voice is evenly produced, effortless, sharp and clearand is matched with a technique that loves every note precisely and fully in its proper length and dynamic range. Her pianissimos are thrilling, and her rapid passage work almost flawless.
Poor Anna, she is in her way down. Her acreer is spiraling downward. She has gotten fat and uglier. She cancels the MEt. She got some bad reviews. She might make some more money for a while, but I think she's basically done. I think it's that goofy kid she had.

@Anna9576 Of interest, opera was an attempt to replicate the experience of the ancient Greeks. All those plays we read by Aeschylus, Euripides, etc., were sung. If you look at the plays, you will see chorus after chorus. Those were REAL choruses, just as is seen in "modern" opera. I quite agree about the insults and hope folks will enjoy one another's company a bit more.

Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

Simple. Because this was a bourgouise art from the 19th century. If a modern composer made music like this today, they would get murdered by the critics for living in the past. We have to keep moving on, yes? If modern listeners have a much more primitive understanding of harmony and Western-style singing, we have a FAR greater understanding of rhythm & atonality. This IS beautiful, but it is a museum piece.

First time i saw Petya in Bonn May2007 as Lucia. She's one of the best sopranos of the new generation and certainly first-class in belcanto.
In my opinion she's better as Damrau.
