Of every member of the bands I mentioned, only Paul McCartney was knighted, and he wasn't knighted until 1997. Quit talking out of your backside and do research before you post something. Whether they promoted drug use or not is immaterial. Elvis was on uppers, downers, and a pharmacy full of quacked out meds prescribed by his personal, but incompetent, physician. And Ray Charles covered Eleanore Rigby by choice. Trust me on that too: he was one who NEVER did anything anyone told him he had to.
Youtube won't let me post the link to the Ray Charles performances of this song. I just wanted you to play them back to back - Elvis' version is just too happy and poppy.
Yes I did see "Ray". Foxx was excellent, but getting back to my point is that Elvis turned this great R&B classic into a goofy party tune. Listen to the difference with how it's SUPPOSED to be done:
@1olrocker yeah I did, you're right, the key has been changed, but at least Elvis was an American, the British invasion did to Rock and Roll what Elvis did to Ray Charles
@1olrocker Chances are we would agree on many things, I too am a white boy , but I'm Canadian, and the whole British invasion thing was largely encouraged up here, it was a war of a different kind. Cultural war to replace the presidential assassinations carried out by the City of London banksters. Most Americans think there is friendship between you, appearances only, did you know Elvis went to the President, and warned him the Beatles were unAmerican and he wanted to be a secret agent?
@multidimensional1 Now you're delusional. The Beatles owned the 1960s due to their song writing skills, charisma, style, and musicianship - they were like nothing EVER seen before, or since really. And while there were A LOT of British groups during the 60s and 70s, only a handful really made a difference after the Beatles (Stones, Who, Kinks, Zep, Floyd) And Elvis never met a President until '72 when he met Nixon. Anything else you believe is conjecture. Save it for the conspiracy theorists.
@1olrocker well, you sure know your Rock and Roll, and the British invasion bands you mentioned all promoted drug use, and the Queen was right there to hand out knighthoods. That's what Elvis warned the president about. Something I find disturbing is when a totally accomplished American bluesman or star had to cover the Beatles, Ray Charles for example sang Elenore Rigby...the British invasion virtually killed jazz...
@1olrocker It all began at a party in Palm Springs, California in early December 1970.
In a conversation with Vice President Agnew at the party, Elvis expressed his concern for what he felt were threats to American culture posed by, not only the British Invasion, but also the drug culture, the radical SDS, the hippies and the Black Panthers. Three weeks later, Elvis, accompanied by two body guards, was bound for Washington, DC aboard an American Airlines flight.
This is from the "Viva Las Vegas" movie. My wife and I have it, and it is definately Elvis' best . But, concerning Elvis being a better singer than Ray Charles, how does someone kick the ass of one of the greatest singers of all time?
@multidimensional1 It's not about being the best singer, it's about delivering the song the way it was meant, the way it was written. One thing Ray Charles injected into his music was dirty, sultry sex. Elvis is singing this song in a key and temp that is sterilized for white audiences at the time, I and I'm a white person. Ann Margaret was hot but wiggling her little ass is not sultry, it's like a chipmunk dancing around. This song is meant to be slower and have a more bluesy, soulful rhythm.
@1olrocker well, the interesting thing here, is that this style didn't exist, when Ray wrote this song, I was referring to shumpert67 comment below, I just think it's funny when people compare the worlds best, and say this one, kicks that one's ass. But, you're saying that "I got a woman" is one of those songs that is better, when being performed by someone other that Ray Charles, and I think you may be right...just like Jimi's version of "All along the watchtower" is to Bob's take
@1olrocker sorry, I re-read your post to me, and, are you saying that you prefer this version, or you think Elvis performs this song a little too fast?
@multidimensional1 What I'm really saying is Elvis' version is silly garbage. Every pop cliche was used in the song - tuned up to a higher, "happier" sounding key, up tempo to be more of a dance tune, and Ann Margaret doing her impersonation of a chipmunk on uppers. And it was somewhere between 1951-53 that Alan Freed began using the term "rock 'n roll" on his Moondog show on WJW 850 AM..... I'm a Clevelander, this historical knowledge is as important to Clevelanders as the first President
@1olrocker Have you seen the movie "Ray" with Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles? I would recommend it to you, if you haven't seen it, it's really good. I became aware of Ray Charles (and others) when I saw the Blues Brothers in the theatre in '79. I was 14. I totally loved that sound of "Shake a tailfeather" and tried to find more of that, from Ray but I don't think it exists. My wife and I found a box set of Ray Charles on the Dick Cavett show in '74? which is just prior to filming the Blues Brothers,
@1olrocker I thought Rock and Roll started in '55 with "Rock around the clock" but I guess it had to develop first, what songs was Alan freed spinning to coin the term in '51 to '53 for example?
Just yesterday afternoon I was copy/pasting the pop charts from '55 to '71, and "Rock around the clock" was #1 in '55. but the Twist didn't happen 'til 1960
@1olrocker I looked at the charts for 1951 and what I see is "Rocket 88 "Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats" (with Ike Turner) hitting #25, being touted as the first Rock and Roll song,.. I used to sing and play James Cottons' version of this, love it!
@1olrocker I just re watched this vid, and I was mistaken on the title, it's "What'd I say" written in '58, released in '59. "I got a woman" was recorded in '54 before "Rock and Roll" even existed. Pretty sure Elvis version of "What'd I say" is in the same key, and tempo, but yeah, young white kids re-energizing a great song. (Viva Las Vegas, 1963)
@1olrocker well it's not an Elvis performance it's an Elvis movie. during the 60's they made Elvis family friendly in his movies. so if you don't like this version then just don't listen to it.
I know Elvis was the king - in the 1950s, but by this time his music was so pop and bubble gum watered down it is horrible. This rendition of the Ray Charles classic is a joke. First, it's tuned to an upbeat key which makes it sound cheesy instead of funky and soulfull and bluesy like it should. It's too fast. Too upbeat and happy. Once Elvis left for the Army his bluesy soul was cleansed and became vanila. Only his '68 comeback special had any spark of what he originally was.
I have just read that Ann-Margret was in Sweden the last year in a very small town near where i live, and I missed her!!! OMG that must be the biggest mistake i have done!
The three close-ups of Ann-Margret (beginning at 1:53), practically making love to the camera, should make any long-time fan of hers, like myself, as horny as all holy hell. Its an absolute crime she has to get old...67 this year.

it does seem like fun..i dont think its just the "gangsters" and rappers fault i think its everyones for just thinking perverted and wanting to grind and stuff against each other than dancing like that...
People were innocent and happy back then. White people hung with white people and had fun without thinking they needed to please the gangsta rappers. Yup we need to go back to those times. Stupid black culture has ruined our innocence.
"White people hung with white people[....] Stupid black culture[....]" This Ray Charles song is an example of "black" culture, which Elvis loved. Elvis hung with "black" people, duetted with a "black" woman in one of his movies before this, hired "black" musicians such as Dudley Brooks for his records, and wasn't innocent.
Youre a fool. Back then this wasnt considered innocent. This was "grinding" back then and if you go back and read up in your history you would know that Elvis got a lot of slack for dancing the way he did. Not to mention he loved BLACK music. If ALL the WHITE people hung out with the WHITE people back then there would be no ELVIS.
