@absolumer he actually did it perfectly without a map. what resulted in his death was letting hunger get the better of him and making a small mistake resulting in his death. such a shame
Thanks so much for posting this, and NOT TALKING. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Every other video has people talking about whatever is on their mind as they show the bus. So, thanks!
@ABCMATTISSOMMER A man Chris Mccandless was an adventurer and he died here in 1992 but Im not to go int serious detail read the book Into the Wild or look up Chris Mccandless on google
Chris was a romantic, idealistic kid who did not plan for his trip at all and got what anyone would... Dead. I remember almost doing the exact same thing in my early 20's. Just setting out for nowhere with no plan, no gear and no experience.
Sucidial because he wanted to live outside of society? I think not...I believe we all have his inner urge to do something that makes us feel alive and he set forth so do so, which ulitimately cost him his life. Many cultures have lived off the land. He got his education from books, but had he be properly educated on living off the land, shelter, meat preservation and so forth by an elder who educated in that field he would have fared well and most likely still be alive. Eitherway RIP!
What about his dad? He goes walking down the street and then he just lays down and stares at the sky. How's he think that's going to end? The whole family was nuts if you ask me.
And look how he ended up..death from starvation. I think we have the "stones" just not the stupidity.... Oh any by the way he did have a map....Why he didnt use the tram to get across the river is a mystery no one can figure out. Most theorize he was suicidal...
"Living completely off the land like that, month after month, is incredibly difficult. I've never done it. And I bet you that very few, if any, of the people who call McCandless incompetent have ever done it either, not for more than a week or two".
-(Into the Wild by John Krakauer)
Cha0sman, I have a feeling youre one of the people being referred to above
Also, its common knowledge that he had NO detailed map. So if youre going to attack a dead guy, get your facts straight!
this should be in my opinion taken as a lesson on foolishness and there should have been far more warnings to young test filled men that this is an example of how to kill yourself. the alaskan bush is nothing to test yourself against it will always win if your that foolish. Shame he seemed an interesting guy and now instead of sharing that with all of us he dies alone,scared,67 lbs, most probably in pain, and leaves a devistated family behind. So Heroic ?!?
Wow! I'm happy to see that everyone isnt all warm and fuzzy about this guy. I have traveled and camped all over and understand and respect the feeling he had for me it was fulfilled following the Band all over but that rarely took me into such a wilderness area.
Even though he lived a short life he did get to experience somthing amazing that most people now a days will never understand. I think Chris had alot of courage and to me I think his story is one of a kind and many people can learn alot from him. Life is not all about money or possessions its about freedom.
The scottish lion rampart flag hanging from the bus ceiling - did that belong to Chris? I don't recall seeing that in the movie. I have one flying from my house in the USA (being Scottish and having lived in Scotland for 20 odd years) so quite intrigued!!
this scares me, but is also extremely fascinating.
like, i guess it creeps me out and scares me that the guy who is very inspirational and left his family, life, and home for this adventure died in that very bus.
maybe it's just me, but i wouldnt want to go in there. a outside view would be fine.
Awesome shots, it must have been haunting to be there. Too bad the silence is broken by the radio though, lol. Still, very nice footage, thanks for posting!
If you've ever been to the "slabs" you'd know there are no girls that look like the one in the movie living out there..meth addicts looking for scrap aluminum mostly.
Reading the book and seeing the movie gave an insight to Christopher McCandless as being a peace loving person, a man of wisdom at such a young age, an honourable man for not bedding a girl he easily could have. He spread good will. He brought life back to some he met who had lost the life within. It made me think.Christ could have been him and if not? Then it surely showed that we, as the populace, would not tolerate Christ if He DID return. So to those who keep calling for Christ, STOP.YouSee?
"a man of wisdom at such a young age"? He could have saved himself by crossing the river through a bridge that was 1/4 mile away from the bus. Going into the wild without a map is utter lack of wisdow, unless he meant it as a suicide.
There was a cable nearby, not a bridge. Chris didn't know that because he didn't have a map. He didn't have a map because he wanted the extra challenge. A large portion of the book "Into the Wild" is devoted toward explaining that difference. Accepting a risk and knowingly taking on a dangerous challenge is not an utter lack of wisdom.
From Chirs page @ Wikipedia: "There was a hand-operated tram that crossed the river 1/4 of a mile away from where he fell in".
And I'm sorry - "Into the Wild"'s author Jon Krakauer has never talked to Chris about his intentions. The best he can do is guess.
God only knows if he was a wise youngster - maybe he indeed was, but I thought I'd be the devils advocate and point out maybe he was the foolest of fools.
Anyway - fool or wise, he wouldn't have died if he had a map. Take your conclusions.
yea but if u watched the docu with sean pen talking about the map issue he clearly says he talked with krakauer about this many times , and they both reached the same conclusion , u cant walk anywhere on this earth today without it being mapped already , so what do u do ? u dismiss the map , and thats what he did , he didnt wanna know where hes going he wanted to literally go into the wild and experience it ,without a map , unfortuantlly it cost him his life...
But I certainly blame him for that. He made a concious decision that cost him his life.
If he was suicidal, then OK, he got what he wanted. Else, it seems pretty stupid for me. He could've taken a map, and only use it in case of a dire emergency - but he didn't.
@absolumer you are very wise and open minded, some people just don't get it... malayacomments.blogspot. com the writer talks about how mccandles was misunderstood
I like to think that although it cost him his life, it was quite a good and fullfiled life he went through in the wild, and I think that is why he died in peace (proof with the message he left behind).
Eddie Vedders Song that accompanies the movie sums it all up. "I know the rules, but the rules don't know me" What a great way to say it Eddie. Chris was a pioneer, a free thinker and not afraid to stare danger in the face. BUT- he is also an IDIOT. Like Droopydwg says, no real gear to speak of, no compass or a map... That was not smart at all. with a .22, he should have done ok, hunting wise, why he only made it about 6 months in no mystery, he withered away to nothing and it's his fault.
Hero??? idol??? are you kidding me to walk into alaska with little less than 25 pounds of gear, no compass or a decent map? thats not heroic at all it's stupid. a bus wasn't going to save him. winter in alaska is bad enough let alone not being prepared for it. god bless him but chris wasn't helping himself survive at all.
Chris McCandless changed my life forever. I realized how horrible money is and swore I would stop living a materialistic life. Once I start college, I am going to go on monthly camping trips to enjoy nature in honor of Chris' memory. I finally found a hero and he is it. I also plan on visiting the bus before I die.
After EXTENSIVE research our conclusion is he was yearning to see life from a brand new untainted perspective, and without certain life sustaining knowledge in the surroundings he sought out-he ultimately lost his life. Our hearts, prayers and compassion will forever be with Christopher and the POSITIVE people that he loved so dearly and who truthfully loved him.
Chris didn't lose his life in Alaska...He found it. If you think the story of his life sad than you totally miss the point. His life was far from sad. Not to go would have been poor judgment. And to those who want to visit the bus and live like Chris...you need to find your 'bus' and live your own life.
Christopher McCandless WAS brought up in a turmoil infested household. It doesn't matter what the guilty parties wishes to be common knowledge. They should never have had a child at that point in their relationship. When a human being has that as their fundamental base, it is only a matter of time before they make a decision based on poor judgment that will ultimately negatively affect their life and the lives connected to theirs.
he was one of the most inspiring people that our country has ever seen..so maybe you should rethink the way you live and realize how hard it must be to give up everything you have to find true happiness.. you materialistic assholes
man you guys arguing over why he did this or that or he was dumb or selfish...was probably one of the reasons he fled civilization, it wasn't cause he was selfish, he just wanted out, and really believed it all had no meaning and couldn't bring you happiness, and wouldn't even waste a breath at laughing at the people arguing whether what he did was substantial or not, he lived out his dream which is more than any of you could say including me, I respect him wholeheartedly :)
Dude, who fuckin' cares. The guy was above anyone and anybody, he had a dream and he fucking did it. You're jealous that he was able to find true happiness and you're just fucking stupid. He was a genius, yes, he could've lived to write and be an amazing person but he chose not to. He knew eventually something would go wrong, he was defiantly not some idiot going off into the wilderness for no damn reason.
I'm not jealous this was suicide dude. "he was able to find true happines" lol, do you remember one of last sentence in the film ? "heppiness is only true, when we share it" you dambass
When he refused to take the map that was offered, Chris committed suicide.Only 1/4-mile away, there was a hand-operated tram that he could have used to cross the river. His parents, sister and others lived in agony because of his failure to contact them when he had the opportunity during his travels, so he was not only foolhardy but also a cold, selfish and unforgiving person. The correct title for Chris's story should be "Egocentricity Personified: The Story of Christopher Johnson McCandless."
This is just some stupid-ass bus in the middle of fucking nowhere. I bet Chris-whats-his-face is happy knowing people think that he actually did something useful with his life, when in fact he did abso-fucking-lutely nothing of notoriety. Good job Chris-something-or-other for duping so many people, I guess you deserve that much.
wow dude, you truly duped yourself because you are completely missing the point of why he did what he did. sure it was in the middle of which was the whole point, and you really know a lot about the story I bet with your chris whatchamacallits....what a prick...have fun with your life man and smile instead yo
No, I understand the whole point. And me calling him "Chris whats-his-face" was to illustrate the point that I don't even care what his name was.
None of what he did changes the fact that he left his family behind, who cared about him deeply, and left them wondering where he was and afraid for his safety. I have no sympathies for a guy who does that sort of thing to the people that care the most about him.
Ok, let's recap shall we? This kid was "great" because he had the gumption to hitchhike from Virginia to this decrepit bus and starve to death? Um, which part of that was great exactly? I can respect the "voyage of self-discovery" bla bla bla but let's suspend this hyperbole of "greatness" please and maintain a little perspective.
your missing the whole point of the story, hes not great because he hitchhiked all the way to Alaska and starved to death, its what he was trying to achieve. he was trying to get away from all the corruption that society makes us believe in, he was trying to just be truly free. hes great for what he believed in and how he went about expressing his opinion to the world. at least thats why i think hes great, but you can think what you want.
What I take to my heart from this video,is that we can actually go there and see and touch where a person was ,in the past.I would love to see the Pioneer Trails and see or touch an abandoned sod hut,or ghost-town.The people who went these paths were simple, ordinary folks,we don't need to herald them as heros or wise-men.They went a different path and became interesting, they interest me still.
getting high is one more attachment, one more thing for the illusionary self to think that it is something else. Chris wanted to kill his illusionary self. Weed isnt freedom it is an illusion. wake up my friend
Great story of a great man... nothing more. Please stop glorifying this creepy bus from your computer seats like if you were Chris. I mean it's gret checking the bus nowadays, but if you really admire the guy, stop hating those who have guts to ho there & try to follow Chris steps if you admire him that much. It's kinda pamphleteering... sucks. Great video!
Casey, I would like to retract the comment I made over 7 months ago. I would like to publicly apologize for calling you a "low life grave robber". I still don't know why you removed the panel and sold it, and I don't care. The truth is, you have kept thousands in touch with something we all feel of some significance in our lives, and our attachment to Chris. I hope the Alaskan Government leaves the bus there. But removing it will never erase the legacy of Chris, love him or hate him. I love him.
The bus is way older than chris, he just found it like many others, before and after. Someone died in most spots on earth, it doesent make it their spot
chris is probably the most well known person, so many would consider it "his" spot, he was also more than likely the last to die there, although your point is right, its easy to see why it is commony called "chris's spot"
So you can actually go in and start up a fire and everything? I wonder how much of the stuff there is original and not crap others left there. Either way it is erie seeing the actual bus and surrounding area like this after reading the book so many times.
It's off of an old logging road I beleive, I know that it was dragged up there by a dozer to provide shelter for loggers and road workers during storms and stuff
Well officially the bus and others like it belonged the Fairbanks transit system, shortly after it was created this system broke down and failed, they had nothing to do with all these busses, so they dumped them all into the wilderness, and hunters and campers found them and they became popular places to stay when in the wilderness.
not true They were attempting to build a road to kantishna within Denali National Park. After realizing they road was impossible to build due to the permafrost, they abandoned the road and the bus was left. the road was build in it's present day location
come on guys, do u really think that mccandless care about this bus? this is just a material thing. those of you who see it as a sanctuary or a sacred spot are totally mislead, maccandless would never relate himself to a particular place or a material object.
Well he actually did, it was kind of hypocritical that when he wanted to live in nature, he eneded living in this bus for 3-4 months, and he died in it too.
i am in switzerland, read the book and saw the movie. I have a lot of respect for Chris, even if he done big mistake ( we all make a lot). BUT I HATE THE IDEA TO MAKE THIS PLACE A PLACE FOR TOURISM. We have to let this place like a sanctuary. RIP Chris.
yet no one blames the guy for buying the a part of the bus so that he could surely brag to his friends about what he has. The whole idea was to get away from a society like this and in the end his legacy is stuck in it
hes just showing people what its like for if they want to visit it or somthing theres no need to tell him he should be shot for helping others including me.
You go all the way out there to capture the serenity and stillness of such a sacred area and you can't even turn your damn radio off for 5 minutes while you videotape? Its THAT kind of crap that Chris McCandless was escaping from in the first place! Jeeeeeez!
What you have to remember these days is that most of us, get up for work come home pay bills go to bed... we repeat that most of our lives then die! at least this lad experienced things that we could never dream about!
I do not understand why everyone is romanticizing this story...tragic as it may be.For such a smart kid...he was terribly stupid, and it cost him his life.Just another
some people might say this is weird coming from a 14 teen year old. but i respect everything chris did. i want to move to Alaska just to get out of this sick society.
I have yet to see the movie about the adventures of one of us that actually lived his dream. I will buy the DVD, as I, unlike Chris, live warm and cozy all year long. I appreciate the opportunity to see his dwelling, and think that "mtcaving" documents the place respectfully and informatively.
jayoeyou, did you know, that you can fly with heli from healy to the bus? They will charge you $900 bucks for 4 people. You will stay there an half hour and will be flown back. That's creapy bussinness, not what mtcaving does.
Chris would want people to see the bus, to see what it was like through his eyes. to fell what he felt, maybe someday someone will carry on where he left off. It is a place all should go and think about themselves and who they are. This but isn't some forbidden spot adopted by these romanticists who feel the bus should be this hallowed ground. Relax. I hope everybody gets to see this bus re-evaluate their life.
I agree...it should stand as a testament to individuality and freedom. Chris lived as he wanted, and even though he died alone, he will never be forgotten. I hope to make the trip to the bus some day, if only to try and understand who he was, and get a clearer perspective of my own journey on this Earth. Hopefully nobody steals anything from the bus to sell on ebay...
I read the book and was amazed by all his travels. Chris was always able to adapted to his situation. Its just really sad that his life came to an end in the manner in which it did. I hope that if people do choose to live a life like Chris that then can truly be prepared with the knowledge to survive out in the wilderness. thanks for agreeing hope u make it some day!!!!
Yeah but if Casey (Mtcaving) continues to strip clean the contents of the bus there will be nothing left especially since he seems so obsessed to go out there!
That is part of what piques my curiosity; in all of this....the story, the book, the movie, the bus, Mexico, SD or AK or any of the many places and pieces in between, what is it that rings true with this saga? Surely it is not any one of these elements that galvanized these discrete entities into resonance with such a broad populous.
I will admit that the story has impacted me, and perhaps influenced my seeking out the "bus" because it was available to me, but I do not see any of these physical or mental elements containing any of the soul of this story, and by themselves are nearly meaningless. Yet it is so tempting, for myself, and others to attach emotionally to these discrete items that together have created a type of idiom that is only "understood" by those who speak the langua
Every sound in this video is so delicious and wonderful. The snow crunching, the water dripping, your breathing, the clean crisp open air... so amazing. Thank you for this. <3

@BlakenMike in 1992 a man named chistopher mccandless died in it after years of traveling to become truely lost in the wild
he left his money, car, friends and family behind in search of some thing greater and more meaningful then the life we live in society
he is a symbol of freedom to those who search for it
he has inspired many people to go out and rediscover them selfs and nature ( i dont mean your family camping trip)

Hero??? idol??? are you kidding me to walk into alaska with little less than 25 pounds of gear, no compass or a decent map? thats not heroic at all it's stupid. a bus wasn't going to save him. winter in alaska is bad enough let alone not being prepared for it. god bless him but chris wasn't helping himself survive at all.

Continued from below:
After EXTENSIVE research our conclusion is he was yearning to see life from a brand new untainted perspective, and without certain life sustaining knowledge in the surroundings he sought out-he ultimately lost his life. Our hearts, prayers and compassion will forever be with Christopher and the POSITIVE people that he loved so dearly and who truthfully loved him.
DirtySouthTV 2 years ago
Chris didn't lose his life in Alaska...He found it. If you think the story of his life sad than you totally miss the point. His life was far from sad. Not to go would have been poor judgment. And to those who want to visit the bus and live like Chris...you need to find your 'bus' and live your own life.
xXKnightShiftXx 2 years ago
Christopher McCandless WAS brought up in a turmoil infested household. It doesn't matter what the guilty parties wishes to be common knowledge. They should never have had a child at that point in their relationship. When a human being has that as their fundamental base, it is only a matter of time before they make a decision based on poor judgment that will ultimately negatively affect their life and the lives connected to theirs.

rioschris17 2 years ago 2
Even though I think Chris made many stupid mistakes...
And even though there are many things about his story that have been romanticized and totally blown out of proportion...
There is just something about the whole story that moves me to tears, and I don't know why.
It's just so... Powerful? Can't you feel it?

he was one of the most inspiring people that our country has ever seen..so maybe you should rethink the way you live and realize how hard it must be to give up everything you have to find true happiness.. you materialistic assholes

man you guys arguing over why he did this or that or he was dumb or selfish...was probably one of the reasons he fled civilization, it wasn't cause he was selfish, he just wanted out, and really believed it all had no meaning and couldn't bring you happiness, and wouldn't even waste a breath at laughing at the people arguing whether what he did was substantial or not, he lived out his dream which is more than any of you could say including me, I respect him wholeheartedly :)

The correct title for Chris's story should be "Egocentricity Personified: The Story of Christopher Johnson McCandless."
sjj0106us 2 years ago 2
He was the complete opposite of egocentric, atleast his ideals were that.
Cilogy 2 years ago
Agreed.
TheRealOneEye 2 years ago
wow dude, you truly duped yourself because you are completely missing the point of why he did what he did. sure it was in the middle of which was the whole point, and you really know a lot about the story I bet with your chris whatchamacallits....what a prick...have fun with your life man and smile instead yo
ditchoven 2 years ago
No, I understand the whole point. And me calling him "Chris whats-his-face" was to illustrate the point that I don't even care what his name was.
None of what he did changes the fact that he left his family behind, who cared about him deeply, and left them wondering where he was and afraid for his safety. I have no sympathies for a guy who does that sort of thing to the people that care the most about him.

Ok, let's recap shall we? This kid was "great" because he had the gumption to hitchhike from Virginia to this decrepit bus and starve to death? Um, which part of that was great exactly? I can respect the "voyage of self-discovery" bla bla bla but let's suspend this hyperbole of "greatness" please and maintain a little perspective.

your missing the whole point of the story, hes not great because he hitchhiked all the way to Alaska and starved to death, its what he was trying to achieve. he was trying to get away from all the corruption that society makes us believe in, he was trying to just be truly free. hes great for what he believed in and how he went about expressing his opinion to the world. at least thats why i think hes great, but you can think what you want.
turbochole 2 years ago
EXACTLY! he knew society was corrupt so he wanted to get away from it.

And what a sturdy bus!

Great story of a great man... nothing more. Please stop glorifying this creepy bus from your computer seats like if you were Chris. I love him.

It's off of an old logging road I beleive, I know that it was dragged up there by a dozer to provide shelter for loggers and road workers during storms and stuff
qwertynads3 3 years ago
Well officially the bus and others like it belonged the Fairbanks transit system, shortly after it was created this system broke down and failed, they had nothing to do with all these busses, so they dumped them all into the wilderness, and hunters and campers found them and they became popular places to stay when in the wilderness.
stormfox1 3 years ago
not true They were attempting to build a road to kantishna within Denali National Park. After realizing they road was impossible to build due to the permafrost, they abandoned the road and the bus was left. the road was build in it's present day location
wdpim 3 years ago
come on guys, do u really think that mccandless care about this bus? this is just a material thing. those of you who see it as a sanctuary or a sacred spot are totally mislead, maccandless would never relate himself to a particular place or a material object.
ewd34 3 years ago 3
Well he actually did, it was kind of hypocritical that when he wanted to live in nature, he eneded living in this bus for 3-4 months, and he died in it too.

i am in switzerland, read the book and saw the movie. I have a lot of respect for Chris, even if he done big mistake ( we all make a lot). BUT I HATE THE IDEA TO MAKE THIS PLACE A PLACE FOR TOURISM. We have to let this place like a sanctuary. RIP Chris.

That's creapy bussinness, not what mtcaving does.
wodanowitz 3 years ago
Chris would want people to see the bus, to see what it was like through his eyes. to fell what he felt, maybe someday someone will carry on where he left off. It is a place all should go and think about themselves and who they are. This but isn't some forbidden spot adopted by these romanticists who feel the bus should be this hallowed ground. Relax. I hope everybody gets to see this bus re-evaluate their life.
alombard55 4 years ago 10
I agree...it should stand as a testament to individuality and freedom. Chris lived as he wanted, and even though he died alone, he will never be forgotten. I hope to make the trip to the bus some day, if only to try and understand who he was, and get a clearer perspective of my own journey on this Earth. Hopefully nobody steals anything from the bus to sell on ebay...
R.I.P. Chris. We love you brother.

That is part of what piques my curiosity; in all of this....the story, the book, the movie, the bus, Mexico, SD or AK or any of the many places and pieces in between, what is it that rings true with this saga? Surely it is not any one of these elements that galvanized these discrete entities into resonance with such a broad populous.
mtcaving 4 years ago
I will admit that the story has impacted me, and perhaps influenced my seeking out the "bus" because it was available to me, but I do not see any of these physical or mental elements containing any of the soul of this story, and by themselves are nearly meaningless. Yet it is so tempting, for myself, and others to attach emotionally to these discrete items that together have created a type of idiom that is only "understood" by those who speak the langua
