I think if you read into history you'd find that Catherine spoke mostly to educated middle class people frequently within the church. Also as a Salvationist our 'works' are not seen as a way to heaven but because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross we are motived to serve society....so in my understanding all Christian's have a responsibility to the last, the least the lost not just the SA. I suppose God would have to use women if men answered the call to serve!
I believe the Holy Scriptures teach, that we are saved by the latter rather than the former.
For by grace are ye save through FAITH, and this NOT of yourselves, it is the gift of God, NOT of works lest anyone should boast. Eph.2 v 8,9.
If we could get to heaven by doing "Good works", then The Lord Jesus Christ would not have had to die on the cross for us. "Good works are important as citizens of earth, but they do not make us citizens of heaven". Billy Graham.
William Booth's life has had a great impact on my life - especially the book about his life (THE GENERAL NEXT TO GOD) and the vision he had about the lost, called WHO CARES? If you're interested, check out this short film I created that is based on the vision: sermonspice (.) com/product/25941/
ps. May I write, after reading other comments again, that I don't recall Catherine Booth preaching on the streets (or churches)in this book. Like 'artscreativity', I believe she may well have to give an account for this. Her small children, although dearly loved, missed her greatly, because of her long absences on these evangelistic tours.
@vivienlizzie Could it be that her passion for the lost, and the fact that she saw people dying and being lost for eternity made her choose to evangelise!
I recently read the book on Catherine Booth. She was founder of the Salvation Army in France I believe. She spent time in prison there. She spoke at music hall type venues and public houses, I think. But not a preacher type figure, if memory serves me. She had a great burden for lost souls.
Yeh, I agree that in the past God has and in the present God does use women... that is not the debate... if it were I would have nothing to say. But the Bible teaches that the Church is lead by men... this is not because women could not do the job... that is not the issue but it is because that is what God wants... He wants there to be an order in everyting... take Ephesisans 5:21-end. It shows an order of submission in life. that order is reflected in the Church.
also it is not about whether a woman can preach.. or has the ability to do it, but is it God's will, is it his ordered way. No doubt she did alot of Good, but I believe she will still have to give account to God as to why she decided not to listen to the scriptures... I know, it is so 19th century to speak this way, but the Timeless truth of the Bible cant be washed away because our cultures have changed... God's word has not.
I think we need to be careful here. God has used women many times before, take esther for example, i agree that is exactly what the scripture says, but the old testament says do not eat raw meat, have you ever had a rare steak before? God certainly can on most likely will use women for amazing things, there are no limits to God's power.
@artscreativity The letter kills but the Spirit gives life. There is no male or female, for you are one in Christ. Philip had 4 daughters who prophesied, Priscilla and Aquila both instructed Apollos. Paul even called one woman, named Junia, an apostle (Romans 16:7). He also said that a woman must cover her head WHEN she prophesied in church. We cannot ignore these things. The two verses found in 1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2 must be taken as commands for certain circumstances, not the rule.
I guess I am just being controversial but, doesn't the bible say that women are not to preach or have authority... I know I know, but we cant get away from what it says... and Paul's argument is not about culture but creation 1 tim 2:13 Mat
What about his wife, Catherine? She, too, was a mighty "street preacher". At first he didn't allow her, too, but after giving in once and hearing her preach he decided that God had given her words that needed to be heard. (No, she didn't preach IN the church, but out in the streets).
William Booth encouraged Catherine to speak, and her first public address was actually within the Methodist Church at Gateshead, North East England that Booth was the preacher of before he founded the Salvation Army.
@witness13 I know you are just making fun .Of me.-The salvation is for you to feel free.Saved.Salvaged.Ask Carlos what it feels like to be free...Nothing and Noone to worry about---be free, enjoy life, screw all that is happening,Be a hippie and screw the world. So easy.Salvation Army has its women and men but ......Army? ....They want money. Most of the money goes to themselves.

You're very welcome! Google her sermons. She was a very annointed preacher.

I read that William Booth only encouraged her to speak AFTER she said "I MUST preach!" one day. Either way, I'm glad she preached, too!
