I love this film. I like the inter-personal dynamics of the love-triangle but also what we don't see. He excuses his actions for shooting Simon as fear of his commiting suicide. Obviously on his mind due to someting we don't see. Although we never see it, it is obvious that the poor transgender informant commits suicide and Coleman has, by this time realized that she was honest in her tip to him. It was a work of cinematic genius.
I think you are right and that these great French actors and movies are Hollywood' source of inspiration for some today' successful movies, n'est pas?
Terrific film. Crenna is good in whatever he's in (eg The Sand Pebbles & Body Heat). But the scenes with the model train and helicopter are comically amateurish, almost at a Plan 9 From Outer Space level.
Melville himself didn´t like the film. When it was finished he showed only this clip above to people. The rest, he thought, was a failure. I disagree strongly.
Couple of years ago I met Roy Nuigera(name wrongly spelled) (R.N. wrote "Cinema of the night", a long interview with J.P.M.) and I told him, what I think about Un Flic. He was completly "d´accord".
I also think "Heat" is in many ways a hommage to "Un Flic". What do you think?
I love UN FLIC. The only part of it that bothers me is the model helicopter used in the train scene. It looks so phoney that I wonder if Melville INTENDED it to be like the plastic spiders in LE CERCLE ROUGE.
@GordonMorrice I think it was intentional. There is also an obviously false street backdrop in "Un Flic".
Un Flic has its strengths, but had it not been made by Melville, I doubt it would be known. Yves Boisset's 1970 film "Un Conde" ( title also meaning "A Cop" ) is not widely known, yet it is in many respects a superior film to Melville's much praised "Le Cercle Rouge" & is certainly FAR better than "Un Flic".
@DidloDurante Good reply. Is Boisset's "Un Conde" available with English subtitles? I'd love to see it as it seems worth seeing on your recommendation. I nust get the new Blu-Ray of "Le Cercle" as my American friends tell me that the picture quality is amazing, far better than all previous DVDs. Have you seen "Magnet of Doom"?
@Bobbinski1971 This is not my favorite Melville film, but the bank robbery and the heist on the train are amazing. Overall though it's not as tense as his other movies, and has that particular Melville flaw of being hard to follow (this one moreso than some of his other films.)
My father - actually a musician - plays a little gangster role in this great movie. He's interrogated by Delon himself at the police station. Yes, I'm kinda proud ;)
The last movie of a master!! I love this movie! Love the start with the rain!! But my favourite scene is richard crenna getting in the train from the helicopter!! Complete silence!!! Just love that scene!!! Melville was a genius!!! One of my favourite directors of all time!!!
i jump up on the caravan, but i think that le doulos is his better, i don't really know why, but that movie is over the top! by the way almost everythinghe did was masterpiece including this and army of shadows
Alain Delon a souvent joué les voyous. Ici, en flic intègre, il est parfait.
D'ailleurs il sait tout faire. Un hommage également à Jean-Pierre Melville.
Merci à eux.

I enjoyed parts of this movie. It has its great moments, and Alain Delon is always Alain Delon.

The Melville Delon partnership is one of the great screen partnerships. Le Samorrai, Le Cercle Rouge, Un Flic......quelle serie!

Un Flic is a tired film short on new ideas.

Melville takes his time in this scene, a bit like in John Huston in Asphalt Jungle.
I love the scene in the train too!
