If you think 540's sound good from outside, Conducting the 500 hp "12 cyl.orchestra" from the PIC seat - sounds even better! Quite a rush to "bring in the power" hold the brakes until you hit the stops (the way is is supposed to be done on take off) and hear those big Lycomings begin pulling their hearts out, begging for brake release! Then turning loose the hounds! I never tire of hearing them run! PS - they also have a nasty wicked syncopated "lope" at Idle too! The "girls" will talk to you!
If you look at the actual airplane you will see that the Aztec is a "B" model which had 0-540 Lycoming (carbureted engines) it was not until they got to the "C" model (1965 and later) that the IO-540's (fuel injected) usually C4B5 models were installed in Aztecs - Piper changed the cowling on the IO's and eleminated the "hole" directly under the prop the new look was also nick named the "tiger shark" cowling because of the name sake profile view from the side. Only IO's can be turbo charged!
