  • I had the honor of meeting Phil Coontz when he took over for Paul Franklin and Mel was playing at Harrahs in Lake Taho around 1984. Phil was a gracious and humble talent, Phil took me up on stage to see his Steel rig and offered to let me set behind it, I declined out of respect for his equipment. We had a nice visit, may he join the other greats in the lords angel band.

    Bill Bailey

  • I saw Mel Tillis (with Silvia.. how cool is that!?) as a teenager in the early 90's and he was the most gracious wonderful man. It could have been that i was the only person there under 35 .. but he talked to me for a half hour. I hope i'm 10% the songwriter that he is. Id be might happy with that.

  • Mel Tillis A magic singer/songwriter I just love listening to this great country music performer. Brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. Many Thanks

  • Superb.

  • Mel Tillis remains one of our best true and real country music singers!

  • kool ass video you cant beat real country music i will play it till i DIE !

  • Fiddle player on the right looks sort of like Hank Singer.

  • Phil Coontz (The Steel Player) died today! Rest in Peace Walter Phillip Coontz 7/3/56-4/28/10. Rest in Peace hope you are playing your steel in god's kingdom.

  • @chipperh2o Just now read your post. Sorry to read about your loss and country music's loss. Thank you for your father's contribution to country music-real country music.

  • What a wonderful music ! Where did it go? We just don't have any Real Country Music anymore !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ok so seconds 1:05-1;13 THE FIDDLE PLAYER ISNT MERLE HAGGARD, LOOK REALLY HARD IT ISNT HIM BUT THE HAT IS THE SAME...LOL.

  • Great Song! Who is the steel player?

  • @fiddler1987 That is my dad Phil Coontz. This is from Hee Haw in the 1980s.

  • @chipperh2o Sorry to read of your loss on these posts. Your father was a fine musician and is playing in the Master's band now.

  • I do this song on my page too

  • What i understand of Mel, some of the stars let their fame and fortune go to their heads and forget who got them to where they are. I have heard Mel is real nice to his fans when others who snub their fans and be plain mean to them. Its amazing with Mel how he STUTTERS when he talks but when you hear him sing you would never guess he Stutters when he talks. A true legend

  • Now that's COUNTRY AT IT'S BEST!!! 5*****s! Thanks for posting!

    Have a blessed New Year!

    Jeff

  • twin fiddles and peddle steel-just don't get any better than that!

  • I believe that is Mark O'Conner on one fiddle and I'd bet a dollar that the other fiddle player is Merle Haggard. Don't know where this was recorded; but I believe that's Merle. Great song regardless. Thanks for posting it.

  • it's definitely merle

  • @songwriter1951 I believe it was Hee Haw in the 1980s. My dad is the steel player, Phil Coontz.

  • @chipperh2o. I love pedal steel , and that is truly proper 100% country steel playing.

  • This is just one of many that Tommy Collins wrote, including many of Merle Haggard's hits. Tommy was the Leonard in Merle's tribute song, "Leonard".

  • Mel's band always has outstanding harmony vocals. Is that Mark O'Connor on fiddle?

  • Never heard of it but sounds good :> The one country song i like is walk the line xD

  • oh man,,

what a song, I remember that one.

I love this one, AGAIN, this was when country music was country..

    Thanks for giving us this.

    I love this song!!

  • I remember this song by Mel "New Patches" came out when I was running trucks cross country and my ex who was then my running partner left me and that broke my heart in little pieces. With God's help and courage, I survivied. So this song is sentimental to me. I love it. You know every body has a song to remember, and this one is one of my severals. I sing this one every where I play in the Southland. Amitié. Louisiana
