I had the honor of meeting Phil Coontz when he took over for Paul Franklin and Mel was playing at Harrahs in Lake Taho around 1984. Phil was a gracious and humble talent, Phil took me up on stage to see his Steel rig and offered to let me set behind it, I declined out of respect for his equipment. We had a nice visit, may he join the other greats in the lords angel band.
I saw Mel Tillis (with Silvia.. how cool is that!?) as a teenager in the early 90's and he was the most gracious wonderful man. It could have been that i was the only person there under 35 .. but he talked to me for a half hour. I hope i'm 10% the songwriter that he is. Id be might happy with that.
Mel Tillis A magic singer/songwriter I just love listening to this great country music performer. Brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. Many Thanks
Good day. Please, can you send to my mail anpouch@seznam.cz Mel Tillis' (mp3) record "I believe in you"? I love this song, but I didn't found, where I can get/buy this song. If you want to send some song from me, type something. Thank you very much. František Dobrota
Phil Coontz (The Steel Player) died today! Rest in Peace Walter Phillip Coontz 7/3/56-4/28/10. Rest in Peace hope you are playing your steel in god's kingdom.
@chipperh2o Just now read your post. Sorry to read about your loss and country music's loss. Thank you for your father's contribution to country music-real country music.
What i understand of Mel, some of the stars let their fame and fortune go to their heads and forget who got them to where they are. I have heard Mel is real nice to his fans when others who snub their fans and be plain mean to them. Its amazing with Mel how he STUTTERS when he talks but when you hear him sing you would never guess he Stutters when he talks. A true legend
I believe that is Mark O'Conner on one fiddle and I'd bet a dollar that the other fiddle player is Merle Haggard. Don't know where this was recorded; but I believe that's Merle. Great song regardless. Thanks for posting it.
I remember this song by Mel "New Patches" came out when I was running trucks cross country and my ex who was then my running partner left me and that broke my heart in little pieces. With God's help and courage, I survivied. So this song is sentimental to me. I love it. You know every body has a song to remember, and this one is one of my severals. I sing this one every where I play in the Southland. Amitié. Louisiana

Fiddle player on the right looks sort of like Hank Singer.

@chipperh2o. I love pedal steel , and that is truly proper 100% country steel playing.

This is just one of many that Tommy Collins wrote, including many of Merle Haggard's hits. Tommy was the Leonard in Merle's tribute song, "Leonard".

Mel's band always has outstanding harmony vocals. Is that Mark O'Connor on fiddle?
