It developes combat and defense skills. And lets you get out some aggression in a safe manner. And I will do it every chance I get.
I actually find LARPing to be pretty fun. I don't think it's meant to be taken 100% seriously. Its just a way to goof of and have fun. Just fun. Granted it's a little nerdy but being nerdy shouldn't really be a thing to look down upon. Just my opinion.

@shwamgamez I am co-owner of an Underworld franchise, and it's growing massively in popularity. There have been so many LARP docs and movies lately and I think that's partially responsible for recent growth. Space tv did a 5 min. spot on Underworld, another 30 min. spot is coming this spring. The home game runs 120+ players monthly. Unfortunately LARP also requires intelligence and imagination. Those can be in short supply amongst the general populace, so it'll never be "baseball popular."

I was LARPing about 3 days ago... it was the first time our group organizer (it's a small group) actually brought us together at a campsite for a trip consisting of event days (3 days of 3 bosses each along with encounters leading up to them). Crazy fun, cool roleplay, epic fighting. There's a difference between sitting at a desk and playing it and actually GOING OUT THERE swinging some latex/boffers at people!
if there activites were considered 'loser' the you could say that reading was also for losers. as well as gaming. this is simply a form of recreational escapism.
I dont think I pretend, At least Im not running around with plastic swords and shields. Buy a WOW or I think 99% guys there has it. when they are not playing it they are playing there :D

The weapons are made of latex and have a fibreglass core, so they are sturdy and safe. Generally they dont hurt that much but if you get hit hard they can.

I like larping. It incorporates acting more than anything else out there. Live Action Role Playing, what do you think paintballing is? It's the same thing..at the plex's they usually do war reenactments.

I was LARPing about 3 days ago... it was the first time our group organizer (it's a small group) actually brought us together at a campsite for a trip consisting of event days (3 days of 3 bosses each along with encounters leading up to them). Crazy fun, cool roleplay, epic fighting. There's a difference between sitting at a desk and playing it and actually GOING OUT THERE swinging some latex/boffers at people!

Yeah you have a certain amount of HP, when you get hit you lose HP, but there are more complicated rules for bleeding out and various stuff

The weapons are made of latex and have a fibreglass core, so they are sturdy and safe. Generally they dont hurt that much but if you get hit hard they can.

Though I get your point, really this is just an example of obsession and desire to escape into a fictional world to live out a different life.
in a sense, its being dellusional and, if it isn't apparent, mostly everyone is dellusional about something. What prevents from being a mental illness is that it doesn't cause any particular disadvantages. Its just people doing what they enjoy. There are lot more "hardcore" and far more dangerous things out there.

Escapism, it is indeed. Everyone needs a bit of escapism, I most definitely agree with that. Though I don't exactly have anything against Larping, I do personally consider it to be dellusional in the sense that it expresses an excess, fixiated longing for an alternate world. Ergo, we're all a bit dellusional.

The fighting in Larp should only be a small part of it man, it's about the story and interactions with the NPC's.
But then again, you're from America wich has a completely different Larp style then over here in europe.
