Andrew sounds like he's trying to be a big fucking guru to these poor pluralistic bastards. So easily manipulated they all seem. Question: where exactly are you leading us Andrew? Wanna lay out your game plan? In other words, HOW do you plan on changing the world? What will it take? and don't just say "consciousness," cuz you can be "conscious" of the horrors in the world without doing anything about them.
Ok fine, i'll heal myself from this diagnosis you guys invented, and start going about ranting that you are all satanic junkie fagots that need to be locked up and that i follow the True and Right and Good path? No thanks.
Does anyone find it terribly depressing to have boomers use a philosopher as a group therapist? This is like Fight Club for aging baby boomers. It's not to say the man isn't wrong about 60's, it's when he starts talking about "collective evolution" things start to bother me.
Is there a higher place to go? Boomeritis makes sense, this new out look has it's pitfalls also. What are they time will tell.
treating each other with respect does not mean no one is diminishing from the norm. Judging others behaviors are not wrong if you own motivation for seeing something is for understanding and concern with it's influence on your self and others.
Your lumping racial, sexual, and class egalitarianism in with post-modernism? All of these are more accurately linked with modern movements, eg. marxism. Post-modernism is a rejection of modern meta-narratives, such as marxism or feminism. The irony with this kook is that that he is preying off a lack of meta-narratives by trying to create his own meta-narrative, revolving around himself. Pay Me and I will give you a reason for being!
I wouldn't equate the two, but yu are essentially right. There is a large preference of collectivism over individualism (the originality producing kind of individualism, not the ususal materialism), when it comes to multiculturalism. I woul like to see the day when an integral worldview takes hold, when both individuality and collectivity are seen as utterly fundamental... BOTH. Without originality, therefore, we shall not survive.
""our lives only make sense when we are living for a higher purpose"" but now your back to the problem of defining what tht purpose should be. how HUGE is this guys ego for thinking he is the exclusive arbitor of universal purpose.
i agree that total post modern pluralism is a cultural disease and i think boomeritus sounds like perfectly good thing to call it. however i think we should cure boomeritus with rational evidence based thought, not a new non-post modernist mysticism. when he says post modernism should be replaced with "THE collective purpose" the question should the be what evidence do you have for your "collective" purpose.
KA BAM!! Totally agree. He started off good, then started sounding like one of the myriad of "gurus" from the era he's critisizing.
Its amazing that the "guru" is always talking to a bunch of upper-middle class people who can pay and telling them to make themselves "enlightened" with a bunch of rehashed diatribe instead of saying: "make your houses more sustainable, grow your own vegetables, help out people in need!!"
What annoys me about this is the constant theme of tolerance which is pushed though.Tolerance is the act of forgiving and ignoring something that is supposedly wrong. You promote contradictions and misguided motivations if anything with this waffle of "evolution" in our so called "new age". Its nice to have beliefs that keep you sane but dealing with the contradictions in your own way-not this book material and "teachings", which is produced to feed the motivation of others, should be paramount.
Funny how they only now start to realize the damage they've done, and STILL manage to turn it into narcissistic pseudo-introspection. Multiculturalism has devastated the West, by importing masses of 3rd worlders totally incompatible with it (my once-beautiful neighborhood is now a slum). Tens of thousands of rapes, murders, lost jobs, gang wars, drunk driving deaths and so on. And these people navel-gaze in comfort. They need to have MS-13 move into their neigborhoods. Disgraceful.
This vid only seems to agree with me, but they bypass their own responsibility and basically say "Oops, my bad." as if it were some minor faux pas and then go straight to the mewling. It's always about them. But their navel-gazing IS our problem, because leftist boomers are now in charge across the board and continue to force disastrous decisions on the rest of us. The upper socio-economic half of the boomer generation has real blood on their hands.
Write books and talk to people? Though the way people have been trying, it hasn't worked in making assholes (boomers) not assholes, though change is the only rule. :)
Actually, I think reality is taking care of that for them as we speak. The problem is that they have already set back racial relations by decades, as they all went for the easy symbolic fix ("Let's Go Green!" "What's that mean?" "Don't know, but it sounds good!" "I'm not buyin' it" "RACIST!") rather than think it through. Wait'll they find out that their version of multiculturalism was really only the old paternalistic colonialism, this time articulated by Mommy. "Pet the nice brown folks, dear"
i love video's like this, and i miss people like this. Those who have a clearvision are so few, and the desire to go along with everyone else is also very strong, so it take some mental-power to keep away, to embrace life and the same time make boarders for yourself, walls against the things wich endanger your life/vision or whatever. Just like an ex-drugaddict must not stay at his old neighbourhood, but cut it off, although it hurts, or giving his life/future/potentiel in their hands !
I'm sorry but this video is not making any sense to me. I'm a materialist so maybe all this talk about spirituality is confusing me. Whats the point of this video?
That post-modernism that is associated with relativistic pluralism, when out of hand, will and has resulted in pathological denial of excellence, that includes the notions of everyone being completely equal, which frankly is not the case. This vid also adresses the false denial of science as a valid use for collecting knowledge... very complicated subject for anyone to grapple.
Spirituality in the sense that is propagate in this video is very philosophical and is evolutionary, adaptive and non-dogmatic, and perhaps even post-metaphysical.
Hmmm. I don't really get how it's post-metaphysical?? Or how its evolutionary?? Buddhists have been talking about these ideas for centuries.
It also cancels itself out: A philosophy against pluralism that begets ultimate pluralism? Chopping postmodernism with the nonexistence of the self begets like an ultimate even messier type of postmodernism.
My conclusion. This guy is dangerous. Boundaries are needed between people and between self, otherwise we are homogenous and open to be ruled...
I agree that this man is a little messed up. He is amazingly materialistic, and an asshole, though he has some spiritual teachings that may be worthwhile. I think post-modernism is an important invention. Though, I can clearly see beyond post-modernism and pluralism. Actually, what he says is obvious. I don't share his extremist views as they manifest in meditation retreats. He argues against boomeritis only, BTW.
in germany people appear to be afflicted with a deep angst.they never get content, they never stop to doubt,to suspect,to judge,to quest. here to be a busdriver is not as valid as to be a teacher, one can feel the social hierarchy in everyday life.the germans condemned the 60s shortly after. discerning, but intolerant. self-realizition means,in my opinion,to demand growth from yourself...damn! i am realy german =P
I don't think anything is "wrong" with individualism in and of itself. It's only when *all* of your attention is on yourself that it becomes problematic...
I agree with you on that.but this video was so "broad" that I felt that some right-winger was trying to say that the "left and center" have lost it if ya know what I mean.
I think being critical of postmodern (leftist) narcissism isn't inherently regressive or right-wing. It could also be pointing to the need for something new and post-postmodern. But I agree with you that the broadness of this video makes it kind of vague and hard to know what, exactly, is being criticized...
I find this very interesting. I consider myself faaaaaaar left, yet I see postmodernism as a terrible, terrible thing. I see it as my responsibility to question it. But you see it as left?? Maybe we should get rid of the left/right thing n attempt to work out what needs to be done to clean this place up?
I say FUCK LEFT AND RIGHT: We are human. We are biologically the same. Surely, somewhere deep down we have the same morals. We find them, isolate them and use them!!
The Boomeritis concept helped me escape organized spirituality. Wake up! spirituality doesn't work. It certainly doesn't live up to it's wild promises. Spiritual seekers are ceaselessly disappointed, and constantly blame themselves or deify a guru in order to explain to themselves why they are just the same despite all the meditation and retreats they go on. Consciousness almost certainly doesn't survive death, so why worry?
I agree to your viewpoints to a certain extent. The wild promises made by spiritual organizations are just business strategies. After 30 years of meditation I have have not reached the so called enlightenment, but 'only' a certain kind of subtle inner joy. I think this 'state' can be reached by any Tom, Dick or Harry, as far as they leave the smart religious movements and walk the path alone or in good company of fellow travellers.
Any human notion is a mere cultural construction. Cohen's view of transcendending pluralism is based on such a construction. Morals, Values, Transcendence...These are all derived human concepts and if such things exist at a real level, then we have merely reduced them to our thought process.
A dangerous Troyan Horse for fanatism. Who is going to decide the ranking in the truth hierachy? Andrew Cohen? Mr. Osama is also unsatisfied with his ability to get his message across to the boomeritis generation. Like most fanatics Cohen needs a kind of
enemy imago in order to "steal" the momentum he needs to put his view on the top of the hierachy of perspectives.
Not according to integral philosophy, which transcends organized religion, but embraces and inlcudes its useful aspects within a paradigm that is needed for the world.
Nooooooooooo!! We cannot put the world in one paradigm!! I know it sounds like a lovely idea - but it'll destroy EVERYTHING!! it'll leave us ALL open to be RULED by a bunch of DIRTY ASSHOLES!!
We gotta ease out of postmodernism by seeing the boudaries again, cultures have to reassert themselves!!
not that it'll really happen... it's seeming pretty likely we're on the never-ending death path... garrr!!
I'm not the one trying to put the world under one paradigm, because that goes against good advice from Thomas Kuhn, who wrote about the structure of scientific revolutions, and propagated the word paradigm. I agree that we shouldn't institute one paradigm (that would be non-integral with regard to the facts). Cultures must be preserved, yet free thought must be cultivated.

To remove Boomeritis, we have to presume everything isn't equal. Which may not necessarily be the case. But I really like the idea of exploring this.
On thing thats strange about Boomerites is that in a lot of ways, they still think in hierarchy though. I guess they just don't embrace it.
I like videos that scratch such divergent ideas, because you're prone to taking in a multitude of different subconscious ideas as well.
