Just bought a alchemist head, it sounds great clean, but kinda crap on the mercury channel, very fizzy/fuzzy, gets even worse when the mid and treable are below 12 noon on the amp, is this normal? or do i have a bad one? anyone!?
Yeah this thing can get a MONSTER metal tone when dialed in. I dropped my jaw when i played it. The cleans are quite lush too. YOU HAVE to dial it in though. Don't just dime the gain and say it sucks....most amps do when that's done.
@diesect33 Actually the Uberschall is made in America by Reinhold Bogner (though most likely his employees, nice guys, I have an EL34 Shiva myself) who is originally from Germany. All his custom shop amps (Shiva, Duende, Ecstacy, Metropolis, etc) are made in the USA. Just letting ya know. I really don't think the Uber has a British tone structure, it's DEFINITELY in the German/Euro metal amp sounding tone range, ala Framus, Engl, diezel, hughes and kettner, etc. Though each is still unique.
@wildbill85 I'll take your word on the place of construction but, i have a tube amps "history" book that states the uberschall's a hi end Marshall circuit. That's not a bad thing, the Uberschall's a monster and because it's better quality with his own "touch" it's still unique. when you go back far enough they all came from Brit/USA or Marshall/Fender and Marshall started (JTM45) as a corner cut (for profit) bassman which leo took from an RCA radio. But, it's VERY british in character.
@diesect33 Yeah totally, most amps out there are mods of classic designs. Matchless and some Dr.Z's make alot of money off of Vox inspired amps, Soldano's are pretty much like hotrodded marshalls, etc. Bogner's amps, while based off marshalls, still have something unique about them. The Shiva i have has a throaty distortion that won me over from the first power chord i played through it, and the clean was ridiculous. Dr.Z and Dumble are said to be the most original designers.
@wildbill85 .but with German attitude. Personaly i prefer German then Brit THEN USA tone stylings. My fav amps right now are,ENGL Invader EL34 ver,H&K Triamp MKII,Framus Cobra V1 or 2,Soldano SLO100, Soldano Avenger,Marshall DSL100/50,Mesa rect-o-verb 50 and Peavey 5150 with a tie on a E34L (including screen res mod) XXX on "loose" but, i would wager the Uberschall being a brit-German hybrid tone machine would snag me QUICK if i owned one.
@diesect33 I do like most of the Engl's I've tried, my fave being the special edition, the H&K Triamp is awesome too. I wasn't a massive fan of the Soldano's I tried though and I wasn't that keen on the DSL, I used the DSL 50 for about a month and for a big gig I had years ago, but really didn't like it. It actually put me off marshalls till I heard my friends JMP and tried an ORIGINAL Bluesbreaker combo with the pre-rola greens. One of my friends just got a krankenstein jr. It's quite good.
Its a good amp but found the tone to be one dimensional and flat for a high priced tube amp. I expected more for Bogner but i would say its on par with a Peavey JSX for tone
wrong. thats the #1 way on how you blow speakers. under powering them is worse than over powering them. causes the speaker to "need" more power, causes the speaker to have more excursion with less power, heats up the voice coils, and by by speaker.
im not saying this will happen as soon as anyone plugs it in, but thats what goes down in china town.
First, a speakers power rating and an amps power output are not to be confused with each other. They are guidelines, not requirements for the speaker.
Second, a 5 watt class A amp is plenty powerful to sufficiently drive a 4x12 cabinet when pushed. The guy above is feeding 40 watts into a 2x12, he will certainly have no problem.
My real world experience is, no problem what-so-ever.
Also, realize the different in our posts. The topic was low wattage amp in to high watt handling cab, yours was about underpowered speakers. Very different subjects.
I would hate to see any situation that would require me to play with 400 watts! Thats insane like NachoNinja3 said. That's what PA's are for. I hope it sounds great while it's EXTREMELY Loud...lol.
I have that amp,and I also love how the mesa cab compliments your sound. I thought it sounded great. I have had mesa's and I like the bogner's sound better, more organic to me,just my 2 cents. Nice demo dude
"save the flames for virtuoso wanna bees", electric guitar has the weirdest player mindset....it's like saying that someone who wants to learn Handel's Passacaglia on classical guitar, or paganini on violin is a "wanna-bee"...but actually on those instruments, it's just a GOAL. troubling...
Wow, that really opened up the amps tone. I have played that amp before and it sounded better in the vid than I have heard it, I think the amps might be good, but need a nice cab, good to know that combo definitely sounded more like the traditional bogner sound. Put a boost on it and play some Alice in Chains you could probably nail the man in the box tone with that.
Nice rig.. I've got an Orange Rocker 30 with a Mesa Rec. 2x12 under it... it's not all that metal.. but with a MAXON OD It can be :) oh yeah.. people judging this amp from a youtube vid, Don't. Never use a video to choose an amp, you have to play it.
@skaterdan31 think more of comparing to Mesa's rectos. This amp really doesn't sound like a Bogner...in a good way to me as far as the Uberschall goes...i'm not a fan of that one anyway...it's a Marshall with better quality components which isn't bad, just not my thing. I like American and German gain structures personaly.
not saying its a bad amp its great but seems to loose a bit too much clarity under that amount of distortion and bit too fuzzy sounding, but as its thte only amp bogner do unless u get custom, i am still to actually try it out :)
the fuzziness is from the fact that the wattage of the speakers are closely rated to the wattage of the amp itself...so it has a speaker breakup too..which for many, is desirable but in person the alchemist impressed me even at high gain settings--it remained very articulate and definitely has that boutique sound and response for half the price of the real thing. Most boutique amps...regardless of how great they sound, arent at all worth 3 g's. That tone can be obtained within 1500 bucks easy.
Eh, considering the fact that you can still hear pick noise in this video, I really doubt that the speakers are getting anywhere near the full wattage potential of the amp. (meaning, he doesn't have it dimed). So... the fuzziness is likely from somewhere else.
No, I would stay away from the 1960 a or b series Marshalls, I don't think the 75's would sound as good as vintage 30's. I've owned a 1960A and I like Mesa cabs way better in sound and build.
adding the 2x12 is the best way imho to add low-end and a tighter /darker sound. together the combo's open back and the Mesa's closed kind of give it a 3D effect, almost bi-amp quality.
I actually just bought the Alchemist 112 and found it lacking in the bottom end. I just played a Bogner with the Mesa cab 2X12 like yours and it sounded awesome. I'm going tomorrow to pick it up! Nice sound and gear.
Wow, the boost isn't even on ?

Totally false, having a high wattage cabinet powered by a low wattage head is totally fine so long as their impedances match.
