  • ok s can someone explain me wht is dust and wht does it do? cuz im confused

  • @kratoshades88 Dust is similar to Dark Matter, in the movie's universe it is the link between all the different worlds in the multiverse. Apparently using it lets you move from one world to the other, I haven't gotten far in the books yet.

  • @Damasterdotorg what is the name of the next book called after The Golden Compass? Is there a movie for the next book?

  • @vickyboy96 There are three. The first book is called Northern Lights (the book the movie is based off), then theres The Subtle Knife, and then theres the Amber Spyglass.

  • @Damasterdotorg Thank you for your helpful information :D

  • @vickyboy96 The Amber Spyglass, i believe. though... the Golden Compass did not do as well as it was expected to, so TAS has been shelved, i think.

  • @kratoshades88 read the book.

  • I love how he tries to hide the pride on his face when she snaps at him for being ungrateful.

  • wasnt there going to be a second movie? what happens after all this?

  • No Billy Don't die I love you!!!

  • The priest-guy remindds me of Saruman from Lord of the Rings.

  • if i was a grown up i want my deamon to stay a cheetah my favorite animal with a dolphin

  • Speaking of ice bears, I'm wondering if this movie shows the scene were the bear king and the other bear (whose name I forgot) fight???

  • @g3g3ify You mean Iorek and Iofur. :) And it just occurred to me if that's Billy Costa in this part, his daemon was never called Ratter. Ratter was Tony Makarios's daemon. I bet there's a lot of things in this film that's not following the book.

  • What happens to a world with no authority? We've got to see 2 sides of the coin. Also, I don't think it's just about anti-organised religion, IF an Atheist Society (like the CCP rule for instance) forbade the mentioning of God, it's all the same. This is more of a pro-New Age or else pro-Freethinker work

  • nicole kidman is delicous!

  • I love nicole kidman in this!! Shes such a lady :)

  • just read the book and thought id check this out, beggining was a bit boring but its really good

  • wow all the names in this book i pronouned wrong

  • @94gymnast I know, right?

  • I hate the magisterium they are controlling and jut plain rude

  • they have some fluent shape sifting in this movie

  • COUNT DUKU!

  • lord asriel is sooo not what i imagined when i read the book.

  • I don't get why the picture's moving in this scene. Yes they're in a parallel universe, but it's not like it's a magical parallel universe.

  • @redstrabrerreez it's not a picture it's a video that was taken in the ice land.

  • @julyox20 ohhh i see. I got confuzzled because in the book I think it's a picture.

  • Wow, what a butt Nicole Kidman has!

  • nicole k. is sooo pretty here! also, the idea of the leaders trying to prevent the 'heresy' of the teachings that 'dust' exists, reminds me of the catholic church trying to go against the protestant reformation

  • nicole k. is sooo pretty here!

  • @rzmpnk agreed

  • @Durza95 yea itis

  • @peterpops27 i know!!!!!! i was so lookin forward to watchin the 2nd one

  • 4:59 swastika on the floor

  • lindsay lohan likes the dust too

  • Well, for the sake of film limitations, some things were changed. It was Tony Makarios who got severed, not Billy Costa. Anyway, it's entertaining.

  • This movie is so horrible compared the majesty of the novels...

  • illy costas' daemon isn't ratter.b

  • nicole kidman is amazing but man is she scary in this movie *shivers*

  • MUCH LIKE OUR OWN WORLD THE MANY CONTROLED BY THE FEW LOL GOOD FILM THO HE HE

  • Omg count dooku you swine

  • lol

  • She looks very elegant in that dress.

  • Though I am a christian...I do recognize the arguement against the overbearing authority of the Church heirarchy on people in general...its interesting and worth discussing...:)

  • @MouseQueen86

I'm always surprised how ready modern ( christian ) people are to judge ( and to condamn ) christians in ancient times with modern standards. How poor will we look to future standards? Will we have any change of approval in the eyes of generations to come? Yet I believe the core of Christianity ( which is Christ) is true and will prove right in any time.

  • Motherfucking cool books :)

  • this SOOOO doesn't work... would never work as a film, there's too much story to cover, so every line of dialogue becomes massively significant to the storyline, like trying to act out the summarising blurb on the back of the book. some books just don't work as films, a chunky book is the only means of expression for this story, the acting, script and graphics make it seem like its based on something written on a toilet wall... incomprehensible and retarded!

  • @captainsmile333 "would never work as a film"

    I humbly/respectfully disagree.

Look what they did w/ LoTR!

This coulda & shoulda - & in the right hands woulda - been 1 of the greatest flix of all time.

(I know this is heresy, but it mighta worked as a tv series - enuf time 2 set the backstory & rules of Lyra's world, w/o having 2 make every line exposition)

1 thing's 4 sure: we'll never know 4 sure, since this 1 screwed the pooch so badly... except 4 the CGI & other vis fx, which were awesum.

  • Thanks to the thick american fundamentalists there won't be any more of the books filmed.Long live the land of the free!!!

  • Okay. I can point out about twenty things wrong in this small segment alone. Mrs. Coulter is supposed to have black hair, Lyra hears about the bears but doesn't know what they are until later, and hears that Iofur Raknison wanting a deamon in the Retiring Room, not from Mrs. Coulter. Ratter is the name of Tony Makarios' deamon, not Billa Costa's. This whole film is infuriating.

  • She's so wonderfully pretty. And she acted extremely well. I hate her daemon, though. It had a rather distorted face.

  • 9:19 Lord Dooku wants to conquer another world.

  • you go Lyra. Let's hear it for feminist children. :)

  • the girl in this is a good actress

  • ** really is very good, not "really is a very good"

  • its dissapointing how they changed the book in order to cut time..

  • god this ruins a good book!

  • @feindigokid It doesn't "ruin" the book, not at all...

The books are great, yes: Far better than the film(s) thus far, but that's always the way it is... The Lord of the Rings is far superior on paper than on the screen, as was Harry Potter, Narnia, and even the Star Wars fan-fiction novels have been known to surpass the actual film script at times...

  • nothing like the book

  • I love how Lyra's demon changed color at just the mention of could. cute~!

  • oops, I meant to say cold not could. ^^; typo.

  • I can't understand the book... but this movie... hope i will....

    i am watching it now...

  • Everybody, see my video of "The Golden Compass" that includes a very meaningful song. It is really good: watch?v=y44rYV5HRiM

  • dust?? you mean like, the thing found on top of my cabinet in case i dont clean it up?? whats the big deal of it?

  • @berserk2221 Go to part 1,or better yet Read the book >.>

  • @berserk2221 it's like "earth" doesn't mean dirt. Dust has another meaning, so read the book or go back to part 1.

    love this movie.

  • Why Nicole choose the mOnkey :[

  • @kabyluvnicole You don't Chose what form it settles in,it just does,as a form of your personality, read the book.

  • 8:17... is it not the brother of peter pan?

  • I luv how the author purposely made the magisterium look like the church it really shows!

  • Comment removed

  • this is relly different from the book! otherwise it is kwl seen it all in film, especailly seen the deamons!!:-)

the books r great! i adives you 2 read it if you havn't!:-D

  • Nicole''s curls are very sweet..LOL

  • alright, alright you ain't a lady!!

    hahaha a love Roger!:)

  • that monkey is a pervert

  • omg, is that Derek Jacobi??

  • Do you think that the director pulled the green fire from Harry Potter???

    ...Floo Powder...?

  • Nicole Kidman is so hot!

  • @jeremyjondale her monkey isint .. lol

  • @ 5:00 notice the swastika in the floor.

"Somewhere men have no daemons."- Kingdom of Heaven

"Somewhere daemons have no men." Lake of Fire

"And even ones where there is no authority." Hell

The Magisterium (Roman Catholic church) is evil, but a world where everyone has a demon would be almost as bad as Washington DC. Buckingham Palace & #10 Downing Street.

  • @OKandNOWwhat

You have the eyes of an eagle! I just think it's a swirly pattern though.

  • power hungry bastards!!

  • oooh its count dooku!

  • couse they are ice bears they live in an ice paradise and...yeah you know!!

  • why do people keep calling polar bears ice bears in the movie?

  • They live in a magnetic pole!!!!

    This cientific just said it!!!

  • book much better

  • the books take a bit of getting into but once there they are bloody brilliant the film is good though it misses like a 3rd out at the end

  • "Borrow" ... Mrs Coulter asked the Master if she could "Borrow" Lyra... Now that's sadistic -laughs slightly- I love Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter.

  • when i read the book, i didn't imagine lyra like this

  • @JennRox026 apparently Philip Pullman did, haha. the second after she walked in the door he said she was perfect for the part.

  • i love the part when pam says the north its cold up there i love how he just turns white

  • thankyou

  • thankyou

  • bad enough to be chosen as the lead out of 10,000 hopefuls. yeah she's bad alright

  • pan is soo cute especialy in the previous part when he sticks hes tongue out

  • yeah, tony's daemon was called ratter, so why is billy's all of a sudden ratter? movies of books sometimes...tut tut tut

  • Subtle job they did replacing the Church with the Magisterium, eh?

  • It is a very controversial subject of cource and I think they were simly affraid their income would be lessened...

But on the whole I think it is just the the discussion we need to arouse for the moment... it has a deep philosophical influence and in my opinion Pullman's vision of dust may contain at least some part of truth.

  • is lord asrael daniel craig? if it is, he is so hot. =DDD

  • ITS COUNT DUKU!!!!!!!

    FUCK YEAH

  • LOL yeah at 10:00 I was like WTF it was count dooku. God seriously, this movie is getting weird.

  • hey i thought Tony Makerious or soemthing was called Ratter You know the guy whose daemon was cut away

  • his daemon is ratter

  • at 9:15, isn't that the guy who played count dooku in star wars? the guy right next to the owl?

  • yh christopher lee amazing actor he is

  • at 5:01 it looks like hogwarts

  • the little girl is such a good actor

  • nicole kidman's AMAZING in this movie^^

  • @rzmpnk shes a milf ^^

  • @rzmpnk Yes, she really is a very good.

  • shitty movie great book.

  • lol good movie but the ppl who wrote the comments below r funny XD

  • one of those old guys toward the very end looked like he could have played saroman in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

  • It was, same actor.

When he showed up and I was watching this in a theater I stood up and shouted as loudly as I could "ITS SARUMAN!"

  • Why are some of the Deamons the opposite sex of their human halves?

  • for pleasure? ;)

  • oh....ew!

  • Shut up, Don't be stupid

  • I read that they're mostly all the opposite sex of their human halves, with a few exceptions, because it represents the animus/anima - sort of your other half, your inner voice. At least, that's the really boiled down version of things.

  • In the book, it explains that the majority of humans had daemons who were the opposite gender of themselves, and that people with a daemon the same sex of themselves were extremely rare.

  • COUNT DUKU !!

  • one of the best fantasy books & movies last 20 years! thx for download! :)

  • what's the name of the actor who speaks at 0:51 ?

  • The book was way better than this!!! the movie doesnt even cover half of the story, ignorant movie makers.

  • agreed

  • The film is so much dumber. In a book you've got time to explain a world of fiction but in a movie it all has to be done so quick it doesn't get time to develope and loses credibillity. And Naration never really helps...

  • Nicole Kidman looks FLAWLESS! Absolutely beautiful and elegant.....perfect.

  • 7:58-8:03, that looked weird.

  • yeah it did!!!!

  • its not demons... its daemons look in wikipedia

  • Nichole Kidman is absolutely stunning. =)

  • why do they call them demons? this show is messed up

  • its not demon. its Dæmon. look it up on wikipedia

  • I don't get the Demon part.......why do they have to have one??

  • It's actually Dæmon, and the reason they have one is because it's a parallel world where their souls are manifested into an animal form. It's fantasy and it's very creative.

  • Their souls are inside a creature (demon) instead of inside their bodies (like us)

  • Dæmon, Actually

  • its Dæmon

    deideisempai134 is right

  • you obviously havent read the book, its sounds the same but its spelt differently, read the books and you'll understand :)

  • I wish i had and spirit mate.

you can c thru the lady with the golden monkey dress.

  • this movie is good. I just wish they didn't call their spirit guides demons.

  • Well you probably think that way due to the Christian and historical connotation which is common with the word Dæmon. In ancient Greek belief, a dæmon was a divinity or supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans; an inner or attendant spirit or an inspiring force. Pullman is a very clever man and author and used the word dæmon from its proper meaning.

  • :O u weirdo why did u write all that crap?

  • Crap? Honestly if you have any interest in Pullman's books or this film that wouldn't be "crap" but useful information. Unfortunately some people are too IGNORANT to try to understand some things. You don't have to be so insulting you know.

  • The Golden Compas

  • nicole kidman BOTOX

  • book is the best

  • Zero strength movie

  • i dont like lyra in the movie i like the rest of it but not her i dunno why

  • The books were ok.

But I wonder why all these movie adaptations must be so rushed these days.

I for one, prefer longer movies with less cuts.

  • Yes, but that would mean spending more money for the movie company, and *gasp* more EFFORT!? EGADS!!

And for what!? All in the name of "ART"? pssh

Heh, that's Soooo 20 years-ago, God help us.

  • I got some DUST up my ass he other day..wonder if he can come lick it out

  • ha ha ha hahahahahahaahlol

  • ehhh who cares about the religion thing. its a good movie! let us watch the damn thing people.

  • im religious but yeah who cares let us watch the movie it is good

  • all these comments are just sooo bland. why cant someone see deeper then what is on the screen in front of you!

the film is like a metaphor of our world the majestarium is like the vatican, daemons are like our inner escences, they have all these paralelles & all everyone cares about is how hot nicole looks fuck ppl WAKE UP look deeper a lot deeper stop being so fucking blind awaken yourselves. thats the point of all these writers & creators of such genres of books & films to stimulate your mind

  • Do you know why kids' demons change, but adults dont? I think its because kids are so open minded and free, so there mind and souls feel dfferent things. Adults on the other hand see focus on one thing and stay there. One belief, one way of life. One animal

  • Yeah, something like that.

And I guess it has something to do with the changing of the chidren too. The personality of a child is forming all the time, maybe that's why their demons don't have a permanent shape yet...it sounds complicated , but I hope you see what I mean.

  • It explains it all in the books. It's because Dust is Original Sin- in other words, kids are innocent, so their daemons are always changing, but adults aren't (to do with the story of Adam and Eve, and Eve defying God and the 2 of them becoming adults).

Daemons settle as whatever animal most represents their human. For example, if somebody's daemon is a serpent (like Lord Boreal, who does not appear in the film but who tricks Lyra and steals the alethiometer in the third book) means cunning.

  • actually it was stolen in the second book m8

  • motionempire . c o m /_15258

^^^ check that link for loads of movies and tv shows

  • I hate that jesuit guy that poisoned the beverage.

  • once again can every1 SHUT THE FUCK UP about religion and just enjoy the FUCKING MOVIE?

  • Finally, some sense!

  • theolay, how is God making us suffer? He is promising us eternal life if we trust in him. Sure we go through struggles, but he gets us out of them doesn't he? Your still alive aren't you? In the bible it talks about satan making this world such a bad place, and you would find that out if you read it instead of throwing it into a river. You are able to believe in religion, god will accept anyone so my advice it to give him a try. :)

  • Eh, people are better of not to waste their time giving that load of b.s. a try. It was created as a method of control, nothing more. They didn't call the period when religion (christianity specifically) the Dark Ages for nothing. Phillip Pulman had a phenomenal idea when he wrote this series, he subtley picked out and exposed so much. Too bad the movie completely failed at mimicking what he tried to do.
