I consider those who would look at horses as a meat animal as being a little bit less civilized than the rest of us. Horses have been raised as working animals and companion animals for thousands of years, while cows are the designated main meat animal. If people would make the CHOICE to not eat horse meat, that alone would stop most slaughter. But the problem remains, of too many horses and not enough good homes for them. Overbreeding has to be stopped and that is the best answer.
I've seen a lot of my friends in the horse world argue each way on this subject. For those who say this must stop, I was curious if that means horse slaughter or horse abuse at slaughter? Would you be okay with horse slaughter if it was properly regulated so that abuse is very minimal, or is the whole practice of killing horses for meat unacceptable to you? If so, is all animal slaughter not okay or just horses? Honest question I would like to know how people feel. (I own a QH and mini)
the USA just lifted the ban on horse slaughter. They kept it quiet, knowing people would protest it. Too many people breed without thinking of the consequences.

There needs to be strict regulation on breeding practices (Europe AND U.S.); very strict! Wild bands need to have their stallions gelded, and please don't be sentimental about wild horses, when there are not enough homes for them, nor space in the wild. Same regulations as dogs & cats: neuter & keep populations in check!

i havnt much of a problem with horse slaughter im a horse owner myself id chew off my own arm before id eat horse meat+i dont send them to slaughter,the problem i have is transporting horses across europe for slaughter,no horse should be transported loose,they should all have their own partition and for long trips should have a haynet and be offered a bucket of water every hour,anyway every country has their own abattoir,why the fck they need to put a horse on a lorry 4 20+hrs to kill them?

to add to my comment, by raising your own meat you know that #1 youre eating a healthy animal free from disease, hormones, and chemicals. #2 the population would consume less meat as a whole, processing an animal for meat is not an enjoyable experience therefore you wouldnt want to do it very often, and would let less go to waste. society as a whole, the commercial meat industry, technology, and to good to do it yourselfers are to blame for this abuse. its more than just horses people!!!

The horses on this video didn't look so unhealthy or "dead and dieing" though... Now, I don't know much about this stuff, but I think they should slaughter the ones that are already dead that have died of natural causes. Everyone commenting on here seems to be absurdly caught up on the idea that horse slaughter should be stopped. LISTEN TO THE VIDEO. Nobody's trying to stop horse slaughter. They're lifestock, it's necessary. They're trying to stop trucking live horses from UK, Romania, etc. all the way to Italy for slaughter. The lady said she wants it to be more feasable to ship the carcasses only. They'll be just as dead, only they don't ride as far to slaughter.
This is the kind of topic that rips my heart to pieces. Even sadder yet is the fact that slaughter is viewed as a solution to common horse problems such as over breeding, inexperienced and ignorant owners, abuse, neglect, the list goes on. In other words, these fine creatures pay the ultimate price for human failures.
One thing we can do, if we are truly concerned with the well being of all horses, is educate ourselves. Work to make this a better world for horses. They deserve the chance.

What about the starving horses whose owners can't afford to feed them? No one is thinking about them. Yes, horses are beautiful creatures and we hate to see them treated like this, but would you rather see them suffering?! So many horse owners have horses who are in pain everyday and have to pay thousands of dollars on them every month so that horse can live on and have a so-so life because there is nowhere to take the horse anymore. If you've ever shared a bond with a horse, you'd know that they don't feel enslaved. All of the horse trainers I've known approached the equines with gentileness and not violence. The horses whom I've known and ridden, enjoyed my company as much as I did theirs. How can you not see it when they whicker excitedly at the gait before a morning excursion?

Ok would you rather have horses dying on the side of the road and not being fed and starved to death and have a long slow painful death or would you rather have them have a quick death. Yeah i think its wrong but i would never want to see any horses die in a pasture because they have no food

but if you think about it this is a better way to go. if there wasnt any slaughtering then there would be more animal cruelty than anything else becuase there would be too many horses in the world. so i agree with slaughter but i think they can do a way better job of transportating and treating them befor they get there

The horse of my dreams is up for sale.
Ive been riding him for over 1 year now, but he doesnt belong to me. Hes a plod but he captured my heart! I know he wont sell, i know it, i wish i could buy him but i could never afford him. If you look at my channel you'll see i apsolotetly adore him. Hes gonna go somwhere im never gonna see him again :'(

I used to own a pony.
He is a Mustang by the name of 'BurnBabyBurn' and seeing this makes me hope to God that my evil uncle Tom (owner of the HOA) didn't send him off to slaughter. He would do it just to hurt my family.

(cont.) i understand that horses under some accounts such as life threating illneses and horses that are suffering already.. they should be put down in a humanly order.. i KNOW i would NEVER EVER eat a horse BUT I know in different countries they do..i think its legal to eat horses in the u.s in SOME states but im not exactley sure.. i hoped that helped you understand why its such a big deal.

A true horse person, that cares about the QUALITY of horses and indastry rather you show or not. The market has gone to the drain. You can't sell a good horse because there are too many bad horses. Everyone commenting on here seems to be absurdly caught up on the idea that horse slaughter should be stopped. LISTEN TO THE VIDEO. Nobody's trying to stop horse slaughter. They're lifestock, it's necessary. They're trying to stop trucking live horses from UK, Romania, etc. all the way to Italy for slaughter. The lady said she wants it to be more feasable to ship the carcasses only. They'll be just as dead, only they don't ride as far to slaughter.

This is the kind of topic that rips my heart to pieces. Even sadder yet is the fact that slaughter is viewed as a solution to common horse problems such as over breeding, inexperienced and ignorant owners, abuse, neglect, the list goes on. In other words, these fine creatures pay the ultimate price for human failures.
One thing we can do, if we are truly concerned with the well being of all horses, is educate ourselves. Work to make this a better world for horses. They deserve the chance.

for the simple fact that some of them need to be put down for more reasons than you apparently know. Some are so injured that they NEED to be put down. Some are so dangerous that it's the last hope. WE need to make the slaghter and transport part better,less violence less stress,less horses in the transports.They are natural claustrofobic animals.I cant see no wrong with eating them ,but we need to do it calmer and don't put them in a dark corner with a hundred other nervous horses...

Aw that is so sad. If someone can't take care of there horse they should be kind to it and give it to someone else to take care of or have it put down by a vet in a kind way. What about the starving horses whose owners can't afford to feed them? No one is thinking about them. Yes, horses are beautiful creatures and we hate to see them treated like this, but would you rather see them suffering?! So many horse owners have horses who are in pain everyday and have to pay thousands of dollars on them every month so that horse can live on and have a so-so life because there is nowhere to take the horse anymore. I am trying to educate everyone to look at the gray area.

If you've ever shared a bond with a horse, you'd know that they don't feel enslaved. All of the horse trainers I've known approached the equines with gentileness and not violence. The horses whom I've known and ridden, enjoyed my company as much as I did theirs. How can you not see it when they whicker excitedly at the gait before a morning excursion?
I'm all for saving horses from slaughter. They deserve more. They are friends and allies.
