Scott Goodyear and Al Unser Jr. both came from CART (the true racing series where it was real driving and not just holding the throttle to the floor all race long).
Bryan Herta, Patrick Carpentier, Eddie Cheever, Robbie Buhl, Larry Foyt, Kenny Brack, Tomas Enge, Dario Franchitti, Adrian Ferandez, Felipe Giaffone, Gil De Ferran, Jeff Ward, Richie Hearn, Robbie McGehee, Billy Boat, Max Papis, Mark Dismore, Sam Hornish Jr., Jeff Simmons, Jason Leffler, JJ Yeley, Stephan Gregoire, Donnie Beechler, Arie Luyendyk, Jeff Bucknum, Kosuke Matsuura, Roger Yasukawa. Any other ppl I need to say who left or retired?
He raced in the ALMS. For the factory Acura team "Patron Highcroft Racing". I believe it was Rahal was suing Sharp for taking the Patron sponsorship to the ALMS. It's nearly impossible to get sponsorship in the IRL these days so it's understandable.
In CART, they could reach 240 MPH and actually had to brake and fight with their cars, unlike the IRL where they just hold it full throttle. I'm not saying it's easy, but CART had real race cars. It had horsepower and took real race car drivers. There's a reason why CART drivers kept winning the Indy 500 earlier this decade (Helio, Montoya and almost Paul Tracy).
Too true. Paul Tracy was clocked at 256mph in practice one year in practice at Fontana when he was with team cool green. I think it was 2000 or 2001. Bring back the Hanford device and superspeedways next year hopefully when we go back to turbos.

Greg Ray was the man. He started racing at age of 25! Pure talent.

Agreed. The IRL now is just full of a bunch of foreigners just like CART used to be. Boo.

don't forget Billy Boat!
IRL needs more American drivers like they used to have.

Greg Ray was the IRL Master Until Sam Hornish Jr. Came into IRL.
ltnascar 4 years ago 7
Since Sam Hornish Jr. is now in NASCAR, I think Tony Kannan, Dan Wheldon, and Danica Patrick could be the masters of the IRL.
Buggy1Boy 4 years ago
Yeh Danica? Maybe when she wins a race or two sure. She Masters the publicity lol. Shes got a way to go to catch TK and Wheldon.

I miss this stuff. I was never the biggest follower, but was always impressed how these guys kept those little rockets under control at 220 MPH.
