True, the Interceptor is considered the first, however it wasn't very good dynamically. It only proved the theory at the time that AWD doesn't make for good Performance. The Quattro is what changed that. All hail Audi!

Everything he said is correct; Audi's quattro was the first COMMERCIALLY successful AWD performance car. That last bit of rally footage is over 20 years old...and is still stunning by today's standards.
