Hi Graham i really enjoyed this piece, brings a tear to my eye every time i hear it.
just a little history on it.The tune was 1st recorded in Canada by the 1st Bn.Queens Own Highlanders and yes Gordan Mackenzie was the composer. he wrote this tune to commemorate the 4 young Scottish soldiers who lost thier lives due to friendly fire during the Gulf conflict, yours Tosh 37 Ex Q.O.Hldrs
Your right GRAHAM. I've spoken to my old man who is very friendly with his Father, I know him quite well. He joined the Queens Own when I joined the paras. Haven't seen him for many years as I've been told he was working out in the middle east teaching the pipes.
i've now got the pipe music to the tune, but will now need to find the fiddle music, as my daughter is desperate to learn it.
Was this tune not composed by a lewis man, who served in Kuwait with the Queens own highlanders during the first gulf war. It nearly moves me to tears every time I here the tune. Great tune, I may call down to see his parents for a copy of this tune to see if my daughter can play it on the fiddle
As far as I know it was composed By LCpl Gordon MacKenzie, to commemorate the involvement of the 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders(Seaforth & Camerons), in the conflict.
I've heard it played as a slow air on the fiddle and it sounds lovely !
Graham, This is absolutely superb and credit to you for playing it by ear. To all who is asking, Gordon Patullo has an arrangement of this tune written for accordion.
i went to boarding school in Edinburgh as a young lad, now 28 i have given my girlfriend specific instructions to have this song played at my funeral..wish i knew the chords or how to interpret this song on acoustic guitar. anybody have an idea??
Awwww, sorry to hear that, glad you liked it. I'm sorry I took so long in replying, this comment sliiped through the 'net ' somehow and I only noticed it just now.
I've used my own interpretation and didn't keep the chords I used. The tune on the accordion is played in D, so using basic chords such as D, Bm , A7 etc... should give you an idea I hope
Ex Queens Own Highlander here the original artists to perform this tune on the pipes. You played this to perfection still brings a tear to the eye, very well done.
The first time I heard this tune was at the Longs Peak Tattoo in Estes Park Colorado. It was played by the massed pipes including Toronto, Ghurkas, and brass. It was so inspirational.
Great video and great accordion! I love this instrument!
Another tear jerker...this is beautiful! I could listen to your music all day. Sitting here in my father's (and mother's) living room, missing them, their stories of home in Scotland and Norway, it's a fitting backdrop for this house. This is quite soothing and evocative of those lost days.
Graham, thank you so much for playing this song - it is a beautiful piece of music and you just make it come alive. It makes me cry every time I hear it. Thank you so much. Wonderful job!
Hi Graham , As an accordionist & ex serviceman, I have been trying to obtain the sheet music for this piece for ages . If you have it or know where I can obtain it I would be very grateful . If I can learn to play it with half the feeling that you apply then I know I have done this tune justice . Thanking you in anticipation .
Sorry, no I've not got any music I'm afraid. I learn all my tunes by ear and make up myown arrangements. I've done a google and came up blank, sorry again.
fantastic graham,im going to stick this on my site-bagpipe page at HENDERSONS WORLD just type that into google and you will find me,where are you from? I love the web graphics
Wonderful and poignant music. What a beautiful and lasting tribute. Thank you.

I like this version...it has all of the right somberness for the occasion for which it was written. God Bless.

ohh :(
is their lyrics for it.. or is it just tune?
sahra87 3 years ago
No it's just the tune which was written for the bagpipes and not really the accordion, however it's too nice a tune for accordionists not to play !
graham1281 3 years ago
why is it called sands of Kuwait?
sahra87 3 years ago
It was composed for two young lads from Northern Scotland who lost their lives in the gulf war.
