I always wondered what this number looked like in the original production, does not disappoint. Love Elaine Stritch, whether her lagging behind was in character or just her, she is one of a kind. Thanks so much for this, Dean Jones still had it in him, he seems more youthful in this and still in fine voice, and the rest of the cast were amazing. What a great number!
Ok, I am young and I've never seen the original... was it Elaine's character to mess up like that or was she really messing up during this video? Either way, this was very fun to watch! Thanks for posting!
Very good! Really perfect! Do you have videos of "THE LITTLE THINGS YOU DO TOGETHER," "YOU COULD DRIVE A PERSON CRAZY" and "Getting Married Today" from this same concert? It is these cations are my favorite! Thank you!
Tony Perkins was offered the role of Bobby but was doing a musical in London. Perkins had a fine voice, was in several B'way musicals before he did the movies. Show biz is full of might-have-beens,
You were very lucky to see Dean do the role! He opened the run [4/26/1970], but left shortly thereafter.. and was replaced by Larry Kert on 5/29/1970.
That's Dean Jones. He originated the role of "Bobby" and left the show just after it opened on Broadway. You might remember him from a lot of Disney movies in the sixties and seventies.
Thank you to bigoneNYC for recognizing that!!! Performing this number with our choreography where we were constantly moving, tapping, etc was indeed a killer and then having to come right back up immediately for Poor Baby? Whew! Fun times though!!!
IF anyone has ever performed in a production of Company this number is a killer and to think the Ladies have to sing and perform Poor Baby immediatley afterwards. Saw this concert and love this show.
Thank you for this wonderful clip! You have just got to put MORE of this concert on here! I've been listening to the OC CD for the past few weeks and I'm just loving all the songs from the original cast. Please put up "Ladies Who Lunch" if you have it. I'd be eternally grateful!
Not at all "tiring" to me (quoting rodanvideo). Yeah, maybe "sort-of haphazard", but the cast still played it with such conviction that it worked wonderfully for me. Dean Jones was great but I really miss Larry Kert (I saw him do it and he was a friend). Thanks rodanvideo--I love your uploads.
No.. Not "tiring" to WATCH.. "Tiring" to PERFORM.. This number was purposely long, and written and directed to "show" the cast growing progressively more "tired" as it continues FOREVER. That's the gag.
Thanks for commenting.. I love putting-up unusual clips!
Thanks for your clarification. You seem like such a lover of the theatre and I did find it confusing when I misunderstood your "tiring" comment. Keep 'em coming!
According to an interview before this concert, he totally regretted not sticking it out in the original run. He also said that NO ONE had the slightest hesitation in saying YES when asked to reunite. COOL!
I don't quite get the focus on Elaine Stritch "not keeping up." the fact is, after seeing all of these new interpretations of this material, you realize how beautifully cast that original production was. The people and the chemistry are magic. No more carping! thanks so much for providing us with this bit of magic. Would love to see the whole show!
Is Beth the one with the long hair (it's hard to tell)? Whoever that is, her hair makes her stand out and look much younger than the others just because they all have shorter (or pulled up) graying hair, ha.
Is the audience laughing at someone or am I missing something? I feel like that's Elaine Strich who keeps lagging behind and yelling but I'm not sure.
I think that it's a collection of things. The dated, cute lines are being delivered by a cast that's aged over 20 years. Stritch can't keep up. Etc. These old farts are adorable and the audience loves them NOW for what they did THEN.
I wonder why Elaine can't keep up. I mean, it's not like she had stopped performing at that point (far from it, she was in the Harold Prince revival of Showboat the next year).
Oops! Well, that WAS dense of me, wasn't it? Should have checked IMDB first! Thank you for posting this and the other clips; I really enjoyed seeing them.
It's exactly like the current B'way revival, EXCEPT for the FUN, GLITZ, SHINE, & TEARING YOUR HEART OUT parts! Oops.. I forgot - My mom told me, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything." ANYWAY - These guys originated the roles... and their characters shine thru, all warm & fuzzy & wonderful!! They cannot be equaled.
ummm... Please don't insult the revival. I saw it, and let me tell you it was extremely amazing. I am a big fan of the Original and the Revival. A true Company fan would love the show no matter what people were playing the parts.

There is a rest before Poor Baby, with the Bobby-April apartment scene dialog, however maybe not quite long enough to fully recover!!
You wrote "our" & "we." Who are you? What production, amateur? school? professional?

I think that she purposely "lags" behind a bit, for comic effect. The entire cast has aged, and they all "play" on that aspect.
