  • these are great basses

  • it must be pretty expensive since its usually used in concerts

  • I realy like your reviews! You sir made the best ones! But this bass sound same as his italian clone EKO MM 300 does, for me. So the both are good, but price just cannot be compared. ;D

  • please look my video. is name my video is "BFC TANJUNG ENIM"

give you opinion please about my video. thanks :)

  • yummy tone

  • 3:36 is so cool :D

  • there are 3 types of basists:

    1. the craftsman (pino paladino and none above)

    2. the technician (victor vooden and none above)

    3. the artist (NHØP and Tal and... and... and...)

  • that intro was soooo sick

  • best bass review from this guy I've seen so far! He rocks!

  • jazz soloing... lol

  • I have a question for you:

    since the stingray bass

    has active EQ, which should

I leave flat, the bass or the

    amp head. Where should

    most of my EQ tweeking

be coming from so that I don't

over do it when setting EQ

    to taste? Thanks!!!!!

  • @byjuu246

I'm no Ed, but in my personal experience it's a lot easier to "set it and forget it" on an amp, and EQ from your bass in a live setting. Unless you've got a rather superior one, nobody in the crowd wants to look at your butt!

  • @mikeymacaque OK, to make sure I understand,

on my SWR head leave all settings at 12:00 (with the exception of compression and such)

use the EQ on my bass as needed right?

    And thanks for your help!!!!!!!

  • @byjuu246

Well it doesn't necessarily have to be at 12:00, but just set it to where you like it. SWR sounds pretty "scooped" when set to high noon, so if you don't like it as scooped, feel free to EQ it out.

Basically you want to do the bulk of your EQing on your amp head before the gig starts. Find your sweet spot during sound check. Make your fine tuning during your set on your bass. For instance, if you notice you're getting buried in the mix, boost mids from your bass to compensate.

  • Mmmmmmm......Minty fresh.....Yes,Homer Simpson owns a 'Ray,had to lay out a bunch of Doh! for it.....Groan....ba dump bump....! Hey,good enough for Homer ,good enough for me...

  • PWNED!!!

  • my dream bass.....to bad im broke as shit.

  • I wish youtube had a button to put the $1,800.00 in my bank account to pay for it!!

  • I know it doesn't have much to do with the video but i need some help.

I am planning to buy a 5 string and i already have a 4 string.

I wonder if it is posible and easy to regulary switch from a 4 string to a 5 string without much effort and if a 5 string may be good for funk rock.

My influences are the chili peppers and a little aerosmith, i know that Flea and Hamilton don't use 5 strings regulary but i like tuning my E to C.

  • Best bass reviewer on the net.

  • Ed, do you reccommend the 5'er over the 4 strings stingray?

  • Hi Ed. Because this bass has only 2 EQ, do you think I can play with the mids through my rig and shape the frequency to reach a closer sound to the regular Stingray (with 3 EQ) ? Can I have a lot of bottom with a rich mids ? By the way, I like the way you work. You give a great help to all bassists. Thanks for your awesome work !

  • Please do a review on Wal basses..

  • Slick

  • i loled at the "great for jazz solo'ing" part

  • traduction or subtitles in spanish pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • You have a lil problem with your right hand i thing... :P

  • pwned! LOL

  • is it possible to buy the pickups for a 5 stringed anywere ?

  • @theishjort Yes, I get my bass pickups at Burger King.

  • hmmm, seeing as im on a budget, can u recommend an affordable bass guitar almost as awesome as the stingray 4/5

  • "You have to feel where the flat is"??? Strange, maybe this is how it is in the classic one, but on my stingray I can feel exactly where the flat (middle) position is, since I can feel a slight resistance from the knobs. Anyway, nothing is going to sound like an original 1976 Stingray unless you get one of the old ones...but I am truly happy with mine!! Flatwounds, it has been years since I played those...very nice sound!! Old or new, you can´t go wrong with a Stingray.

  • @TheSRalston The Classic does not have detents, so there is no way to feel where the knob is set "flat". Even if did have center detents, the mid-position of the potentiometer on the Classic preamp isn't exactly "flat".

I own an SR5 (3-band), but I've played the Classic 5-string and it does sound amazing.

  • Bass Porn! Oh Yeah!

  • It would be nice if they made the "Classic StingRay Bass" in Leo Fender's original Design

  • @KarateMastR57 For some reason I just can't get into them, that being said the fretless ones are great. To each their own but even if I was given one for free I would probably sell it or it would sit in the case. But like I said I would dig the fretless ones.

  • let me be honest... cant even tell the difference.

  • these basses really do sound like shit, why anyone would get a musicman is beyond me, unless they've already got a P and a J bass..

  • @louisalive what a one sided view. your friend who designed the j and p basses also designed this, so have some respect

  • @NicolasLTY Yeah, I know where musicman came from, but they're really not that nice sounding, just really farty

  • Have to agree with a previous comment. It does *not* sound like an Ernie Ball era Stingray. It's plenty loud and clean, but it doesn't have the same warmth or growl as the original. And if that's a Reggae sound you demoed at one point, then that's a banjo you're playing! ;-)

  • I just had an bassgasm

  • MARRY ME DuDE!!!!!

  • I have always loved the way these basses look but sadly never could find one I liked. All the new ones seem to have terrible setup jobs and problems with intonation. Chords seem off considering it has a compensated nut. Certainly not like the intonation of a Buzz Feiten equipped bass. Also the electronics never really sounded right to me. My main bass uses a single Basslines MM style pickup and pre and it sounds so much better so I wouldnt say its an issue I have with the type of pickup.

  • Sorry, but just does NOT SOUND like a PRE-ERNIE BALL 70s Stingray. It does not have the rich growl and punch of the originals. The original stingrays are instantly recognisable, its all over the CHIC records, courtesy of Bernard Edwards-take a listen.

  • @CAPACITOR77 Well of course it doesn't sound like the pre-Ernie Ball Rays on the old Chic records and stuff-It's playing through a modern amp, recorded digitally, and you're listening to it on computer speakers.

  • Ralf Zacherl rocks!

  • Are my pre-Ernie Ball Sting Ray and Sabre boost/cut too? I've been thinking they were boost-only all these years...

  • How in the world do you get such a clean tone?!

  • @cavemanofevil I'm guessing it's the Genz Benz amp behind him. Those neo cabs are insanely clear!

  • Pwned ! xD

  • I like that classic SR5 pickguard MUCH more than the modern versions...

  • Which is the main tone difference between this one and the StingRay series?

  • @DudeAndHisBass32 stingray classic has a 2 band bass, treble preamp and string mutes while the standard stingrays have a 3 band bass, mid, treble preamp and no mutes. also the new classic series has the original headstock logo from the pre ernie ball and early musicman days and it also has a laquer finish while the standard rays have an oil finish. also the neck radius differs from both models(7.5 inch for the classic and 11 inch for the standard series) i think that about sums it up

  • best bass ever

  • in the left corner are his leadsheets :D

  • mmmmmmmmmm minty freshhhhhhhshshs

  • are those really flats? 4:19

  • @ 7:05 hmm...

    Minty Fresh! *Jizz*

  • did you use the ernieball strings for the 5 string to?

  • hey what are some good stingray 5 settings on the amp? and action settings?

  • hey what are some good stingray 5 settings on the amp?

  • Hey guitarworld:) i'm going to be purchasing a Stingray relativley soon and i just wanted to know what your thoughts are on the maple vs rosewood neck. Is the maple really a brighter sound or is the different purely cosmentic?

  • @gunryobassist I would like to know too, I like the look of rosewood, but if the sound is different.. then hmmm..

  • @askedenseje yeah exactly, the stingray i want is saphire black so i looks better with the rosewood neck, but if you need maple to get that awesome stingray sound then id just get a white one with a maple i guess

  • @gunryobassist I talked to some people, and one said that the maple might have a little more treble.. But the only difference on the neck, besides the wood, is that the maple is laquered? hmmm spelled? ^^

  • @askedenseje yeah thats what i heard too, and i must say that i feels a LITTLE sticky when its lacquered, not as quick as rosewood for me. Now the trouble is do you go for the neck that sounds brighter or feels nicer? Lol i dunno, im sure they'd both be awesome as its a Stingray. Thanks anyway for the reply man, appreciate it:)

  • @gunryobassist yeah, you're welcome! We might get a reply from a pro if we're lucky :D

  • does not having mid control on the bass bad or do you not really miss it?

  • Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm minty fresh....

  • Totally Agree, Its the only Bass you'll ever need, from a very satisfied customer.

  • Hey Ed will you be able to make a review of the classic mm sterlings or the just the "modern" mm sterling? Thanks

  • Aw man the Stingray is so awesome

  • Those basses are great, how would you compare them to a fender american standard jazz bass?

  • ajajja es el pelado cordera tokando el bajo

  • hey ed. i played the classic stingray 4 string today at guitarcenter. the white version, and it is the best musicman ever made. the action is very fast on the neck, the slap tone is amazing, and the 2 band eq is awesome because u can find your tone easier. when i get the money im buyin one for sure!

  • ha i had my volume all the way up and i cudnt even hear the bass

  • Ed, you've become one of my "bass heroes" after seeing probably all of your reviews. I was just noticing how easy it is for you to go back and forth between 4, 5, and 6 strings....which do you prefer? And these StingRays sound killer!

  • @CountRammerhymen - Thanks, I don't have a preference, I use whatever the gig seems to need. But I will say playing 4 is MUCH easier than 6!

  • (pwned!)

  • 2:10 Coming from a professional bass player... can't even tell the difference.

  • too expansive :( damn I need to win money..

  • too bad we cant' hear....

  • greatest bass ever! I added switches to mine so I can select each coil separately, series mode, and parallel mode (classic StingRay sound). it kicks butt!

  • gonna get a 5-string for bday. gonna look for this

  • SHREDDDDDDDDDDDDD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that vuvuzela button is the best change youtube has done

  • Comment removed

  • Did 4:22-4:33 sound like the sienfield theme to anyone else??

  • @thunddude the last part of it did so

  • funny video huh

  • Holy shit, this guys an amazing bassist!

  • LOL all you idiots talking smack about Ed obviously don't know squat about the bass let alone someone with true talent. Rock on Ed!!!

  • i was hoping for overdubs like in the last one i saw of him =]

  • Ed Friedland is one of the best bass players i've ever seen, a guy who totally understands his instrument..... respect.

  • I like the sound of this bass

  • Nice instruments

    Thanks for introduction

  • This guy is lame

  • im sure paul can play bass, this guy is annoying and all he does is repeat the same damn riff, at least he brought one more riff to the party

  • @88fanforlife Umm, help me out here but I though playing the same thing over and over again is what playing bass is all about?

Plus I can't tell the difference now, if he was playing something different every time there's no way I could tell if anything sounded different.

  • @88fanforlife hes playing the same thing to show the difference between

    cant u see that? omg......

  • @88fanforlife he plays the samething again and again so we can hear the difference between the tones

  • @88fanforlife - So glad I was able to annoy you!

  • i like the 5 String

  • Ed Friedland just GG PWNED the world

  • i bought a musicman sabre around 1979. played it on the road with pre 'IT BITES ' then swapped it for a tape deck when I was trying to impress a girl who is now my wife . The things we do

  • sounds like a midi bass file to me lol

  • @dethklok4911 Same problem I have with Stingrays in humbucker mode. Without a really coloured amp they sound really sterile.

  • @dethklok4911 I think its the other way round ;)

  • @dethklok4911 then can´t ear very well

  • @dethklok4911 shure ?

  • sexy

  • JVX!!!!

  • @Viterkim GGAGGAHAAHA lmao

  • I love the clarity, tone and versatility of all music man basses.

Wish I could get the money to buy 1 of their basses.

    Awesome review!!!

  • PWNED!!

  • 4:57. lololol awesome.
