  • Hey!! If you could, would you listen to a song or two of mine and tell me what I should focus on or work on?? You seem to know your stuff and I really want to get better!!

  • Whats acapella ? Is it like ornamentation ? I was hoping there was a video to learn it but i cant find any ? Chris Brown and Jason Derulo are brill at it and id love to learn ! :)

  • Can you tell me what acapella is ? Is it like orientation ? Justin bieber , chris Brown and Jason Derulo are deadly at it ! And id love to learn how to do it? :)

  • i have a pretty big alto voice but it is more suited to very choral music, but i want to do a solo @ the end of the year. unfortunately my directors are looking for pop music, but i cant seem to find anything other than peggy lee and patsy cline that feels natural. any suggestions on how to go from formal choir music to pop?

  • i missed class 1 this sounds crazy i know how the cat fits in now hes singing like the cat right?

  • interesting.

  • Dude whats up man! See what you think of my videos please! See if you have any recomendations to help me to do better! It's under paradise twice in a youtube search or under my screen name "wilsdm03 thanks man

  • @wilsdm03 : hey boss. I've seen your stuff before. =0) Sounds great. You really have a way of getting that sound Gary has...more than me sometimes. You're voice seems to transition a bit better than mine at times...but if i was you I'd look to balance my tone a bit more push some resonance...and build some chesty tones. But that's all taste. If you want to set up a session to work on your voice and see what I can pull out of it..hit me up with a PM.

    Peace

    Drew

  • I want U be my voice coach! Love u DDD ^^

You've just got a great voice and know how to sing, love your voice, talent, U and your CAT XD

  • hey this totaly helped thanks so much and i wish u wuld sing amarillo sky they played that at my friend funeral and it wuld be awsome if u wuld sing it

  • what about vibrato??

  • @Ajbadboy252 : WwHhaAAttTTttaaBBBooooUUUttt IITTTtt?!! XD

  • @FLATTSFANATIC like wat's some good tips cause i don't have natural vibrato and i keep tryin to force it but it just won't come... :(

  • @Ajbadboy252 : You gotta do some REALLY big vibratos...up and down almost crazy wobbly and then rein it in until then get small and more precise. If you listen to the really heady vibrato I make in the beginning here...you'll be there. hope that helps. Good luck,

    Drew

  • Can you please listen my to performance and tell me if i'm doing the right thing with my vocals. Cheers

    /watch?v=p5vs8hwCIjY

  • Dude, i've been working on the crying technique, and it's already helped me reach a B4 fairly easily. Love it!

  • @flatpicker15 : AWESOME!! I'm gonna be uploading another vocal vid here soon so check that one out too..it might help.

    Peace

    Drew

  • How if i feel nervous n sometimes when im singing..hv some emotion untill myvoice being "shaking" ..... :(

    anyway,u are a good teacher :)

  • You have no idea how much you just helped me. The crying thing you mentioned literally just changed the way I sing. I have been at it for years and I cant thank you enough.

  • @goffster2 : BAM!!! That's what it's all about. If you listen to me sing..I swear by it. It's what helps me through the breaks and NOT break because of too much air etc. You'll learn to live and die by it. Glad to know I could help. Good luck!

    Peace

    Drew

  • Heheeeee at 3:35 I wasn't expecting that XD

Bet your kitty wasn't either :P

  • i been watching this over and over hahaha really hard damnit...... im so confuse hahaha... but im still doing this really want to be a performer...

  • how can i make my voice "step" easier? like you do from :53-:59

  • Comment removed

  • I would love vocal coaching spent one day with a vocal coach . What a difference. .Was taught breathing technique. But i lose it. Its so Hard..But enjoyed your little show there.

  • I love your cat lol :)

  • Yeah! I rememeber this stuff now! Had 4 yrs of chorus in high school senior yr...but that was ..ah...a while ago:-)

  • @risingstar11111 : Haaaaaa....well it paid off right!? =0)

  • Hey mister Drew! How do you strengthen the mix? and is it normal if veins come out of my neck? I know it's weird. Hey Thanks for the tips!

  • @defeatedwyvern : Well..it all depends on the singer. That's like asking how to make an air plane fly. But in a nut shell for my voice, I have some horrible habits but I usually just end up pulling and belting. Once I start to feel like I'm heading down a dead end street I just try and cry as much as i can and hope for the best. If you're voice is put together the right way that'll usually help. Other than that..start with the basics..head tons and compress from there. x-nay on the neck veins.

  • hey just thought i'd leave a comment to say I think ur an amazing singer

i'v been through hundreds of these kinda vids on u tube (ha slight exaggeration!)

but urs is by far the best!

defo joinin the club on facebook!

    thanks for the help =]

  • @FLATTSFANATIC hahaaha..... ur right... just let them.... ur teaching are great also ur voice....hahahaha....there maybe a jealousy problem....

  • I'm not a singer but this was really cool to watch. You know your stuff--that much is clear! :) I love that you are so willing to help other singers.

Thanks for mentioning Adam Lambert! :D He is awesome and the notes he can hit are out of this world. I was lucky enough to see him live last month.

  • haha you always put a smile on my face :)

  • ooooh man i can't get that high :( . i have the same type of voice as the lead vocalist of A7x . but a bit deeper, i can barely hit uhmm like their song seize the day . but after the guitar solo i go like ahh did you really had to go that high. and when i trie to go that high i get an instant headache hahaha. that makes me sad . LoL

but i'll keep practicing . cool vid .

    Peace

  • @bark1986 hahaha I totally know what you mean. there are so many songs where you can almost almost sing it all except for like one note!!! oh well. You can always write your own songs. My vocal range is like Michael Buble, Josh Groban, and Isaac Slade. Keep practicing, and in the end it doesn't really matter what your vocal range is :)

  • Drew lol, i really want my hair like this... But when i go hair dressers i dont know what to say... how do u describe to them what to do...

  • @Skateclark : LOL...I don't know what to say to them either, and no one ever knows how to really do it right except for this one guy. He's like $30.00 or more but ROCKS it out. Everyone else ruins it. I actually prefer it longer and flowing back..but it's not easy to make happen. You could always take my pic in XD. Thanks man!

    Peace

    Drew

  • Bro....... dont know but my voice got hoarse hehehe.... after doing it... its so hard still tighten..cant even do the tiny weeny sound... but still pursuing it...

just wondring what it feels like when singing from the diaphragm????

or the diaphragm must be loose or in????? how do u do bro????

    regards

    roupert

  • @FallunderJustice : Hey man...try and just sing back into your chest...with a hallow sound. With a bug huuuugh. Like the work hug. Huu. If it hallows out a bit...and it's loose...with a low laryx you're in a mix pretty much. Start with the small stuff and go from there. Hope you're well.

    Peace

    Drew

  • @FLATTSFANATIC yeah, thx bro for helping me... ill try this one... chest is easy but when getting higher hehe my neck get tight and my adamapples got higher lol.... but im doing my best... thx for everything bro... ill update u again if something happen..

    thx

    regards

    roupert

  • @FallunderJustice : Sure thing. In the beginning it might help to sing like an opera singer...with that low larynx sound. It helps keep it down so you can sing higher without straining and open up your head tones etc. Give it a try.

  • @FLATTSFANATIC thx again bro... ur really a big help....

  • @FallunderJustice - you need to learn how to learn how to sing with as little tension as possible. Try a vocal fry sound at first to get connection but without any tension.

  • @RocktheStageNYC sound complicated, im a 1st timer and know what its really difficult to do it..... i do really need a voice coach but it cost so much... hahahaha....

I see ur a vocal coach to.. ill will visit ur vids.... hope i can get all the help there..

    thx for the comment...

    warm regards

    roupert....

  • thx thx thx for this tips exercises.

i want to be like u someday hahaha...... quite hard can't do the whistle part the tiny winy sound hahhaa.... practice practice makes perfect...

    thx bro.....

  • @FallunderJustice : sure thing. To make the high pitches...when you feel like you're tightening really tight to get them...back off...and let it stretch..and you'll get it. Less is more. It';ll happen.

    Peace

    Drew

  • @FLATTSFANATIC everytime that im doing the execise my adams apple get tight .. hehe... should i force it or w8 until i get it??? for truth bro its really difficult hehe... but i want to hit those high pitch just like u are.... i started doing this last two days.. and my voice cracked hahaha..... but im still doing it...

just wondering if chest should get tight when doing that exercise?...

    thx bro...

    regards

    roupert

  • @FallunderJustice : It should feel more like a cry. It might feel tight in the beginning...just to get in there...but all in all...you want to get rid of the tension. I don't sing perfect though...and many times I raise my laryx and do all sorts of stuff you shouldn't do...but..in the end..it's just about singing better. Try the yeet yeaat like I talked about real quick and edgy as you cry and go higher. Just give it time and go slow..you don't want to over do it.

  • @FLATTSFANATIC ok thx bro, i'll do the yeet yeaat slower....

u sing perfectly... already switch ur video to mp3.. my sisters says who is the singer so good.... hahaha..... told u, u nid a break... ur really good man....

ok ill update you if there might change... thx bro...

    regards

    roupert

  • wow drew. you know a lot. i would learn more if the vid would stop buffering! lol but i kinda see what ur tryin to say.

    thanks love!

    coral

  • Great info! thank you. I know i am pestering you, but i have been singing for a while and never had any type of lessons at all. i will incorporate some of these suggestions and see how i can improve on some more videos on my page! Thanks!

  • how long have you been singing for?

  • ur cat is mariah?ahaha

  • @dimaflour : LOL...No....Mooey. like,....Moo cow. LOL...cause she used to eat EVERYTHING! XD

  • @tiffycoke : Sure thing....hit up Brett Manning. He's the most talented Coach I've met. Google Singing success, or look him up here.

As for the meet and greets. Would be fun. Hook it up! =0)

    Peace

    Drew

  • You crack me up! haha

I've always loved to sing, but never had any coaching....I'm the shower singer in my dorm! haha

  • @omgitisha1ey : LOL! Glad you're singing int he shower. That's where the BEST music is made ANYWAY! LOL! =0)

    Peace

    Drew

  • Aww! I love cats! I want to cuddle with it :)

  • @ACovergirlStory :That can be arranged! =0)

  • Hey mateeee!!!!!thank u i wish i had u as vocal coach ehehehhe :D thanx for all the informations :)

  • @thedreamers2006: Hnaaa....thanks for the compliment. I LOVE teaching singers. It's what drives me. If I can help someone do something I could NEVER do..or that they've never done before vocally..It's awesome. It's a rush....

    Good luck at it.

    Peace

  • try watching "how to be a true musician lesson 6.4 feat. Regine Velasquez"

    great video. . .

  • Hahahha, your funny, and you make it look so easy likes its not big deal, you just dropp your jaw, and AHhh bam. ARgh u make deaf tone deaf people (me) want to try to sing, and yes i am deaf, i was born deaf, and i love your voice. I hope thats a complement....some would say an insult...im sorry..well keep it uup and i thought that was really cool how u showed us how adam lambert does with the high pitch i always wondered how he did that

  • @CarmenChordCshorty: LOL! As long as you enjoyed it...and the music...that's all that matters. I've been told worse believe me! LOL!

i say sing if it makes you happy. And alone if it doesn't make others happy! LOL! But SING!

    Peace

    Drew

  • YAY aDAM lAMBERT!

  • man finally someone who listens to decent music. i love cash too he had one of the best voices ever

  • @ALEXGARDNER1996: TRU DAT! I always wished I could sing low like that. But it never was my gift. So..I just listen in envy.

  • its like this and like this and like this.. that was too much info in such a short amt of time dude

  • @getchizzled: Look, I didn't have to do this...I did it out of the goodness of my heart because I got a LOT of questions about voice & I care that they get good info. If you wanted me to tell you to breath & sing from your diaphragm, & open your mouth wide yadda yadda yadda, then you came to the WRONG place! You can find that anywhere. But if you're a pretty good singer, and know the basics about voice, then this will REALLY make a difference for you.

  • lol nice instrucion! nd lol tht was pretty funny too!

  • great instruction

    : -) =

  • Drew my wife says i sound "ok" but i go flat alot she is into music and has had more instruction than i have and i love music but could never afford lessons how can i not sound flat and also thanks for ur equip msg back my wife says that i am crazy for bugging you i just love music and would lvoe to be able to just enjoy it with recording my own and bettering myself!! you seem like a cool guy and i appreciate ur posts..last thing what web camera do u use for ur posts? Thanks again!

  • mccauley91482 :

Sure thing man! I appreciate the email!

As for the a cappella cam..it's a flip ultra...not the HD kind. But I only use it on the a cappella vids cause it;s an Mpeg4 format and you can't pop it in windows movie maker to splice it with the audio like I do. For those vids I use an old song cam that does like...avi files I think.

As for recording and singing on key. It just takes time. I STILL sing off key here and there sometimes...and sometimes BAD if the monitors aren't right.

  • But what really helped me, was recording time and again...listening..and getting to know my voice inside and out. Now when i heard my voice played back to me, it sounds natural...and sounds the same to me as when i speak,..or sing. Some people hear their voices and freak out. We all do until we learn to hear it like it really is..and that just takes practice. Also...I'm able to see my voice on a graph with software...and that taught me a lot about how flat..or sharp i was...seeing it ya know?

  • Hey Drew, I think you have a great voice. I would like to talk to you about recording some original material. Georgette

  • Sound great

  • that taylor bb sounds awsome! :D nice one drew thankkkks for the tips

  • Your great at playing guitar, Teach me how? lol

  • stumbled across your videos for the first time today, there pretty good im gunna keep watchin, hope i can learn some new stuff

  • Hey Drew, your vocal techniques have really helped me with my singing, and i was wondering if you had anymore techniques. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!! Hope you become famous one day cuz you have such an amazing voice.

  • @rlane91: I appreciate that. I have taken course's in college. Most were worthless. But I totally agree that there are some people who get locked in a box with their thinking vocally. This is just my take. But I personally believe there are a thousand different ways to lean in with different blends of registers etc. & as such it really depends on what you want vocally. I personally like the transitioned belt...(check out Robert Lunte) I actually shy away from the "classical" sound.

    Peace!

  • Your TO funny man,,, your great!!

  • as you reach high notes?

  • this is a great video that reinforced some of the new things im learning about my voice....i cant wait to see more videos

  • ADD! Same here in England!

  • Dear Drew,

I love watching you mess around, makes my day! Hah! But you should definitely cover some Johnny Cash man! That was unbelievable! You should do the whole song, no mic, just you and the guitar. Great advice by the way! God Bless,

    Love,

    Katy Simmons

#1 Drew Dawson Fan (Double D-izzle lol) 4Ever!

  • Come to Louisville, Kentucky, man.

    You would sell out

  • drew! whats up man? still lookin forward to seein you play down here in dallas.. need some new vids man.. ha. anyways, just listened to bonfire by craig morgan, and for some reason it popped in my head that you would do an awesome cover on that song! so craig morgan- bonfire. cover it! ha, i think there is alot of room in that song for you to do your thing and make it your own..

  • Comment removed

  • You obviously have vocal chops but this video suffers from the same thing others I've seen - you're tossing out terminology w/o clarifying - Getting right on the cords, straight up and down, the curve, etc. If you've got too much airflow, how are you going to "lock up with compression"? Compressing in what way? You lost me on the Whitney Houston thing..

You mentioned that you had a longer video made and YT wouldn't accept it, most accounts are limited to 10:59.

  • @brassplyer Compression as in tension in your voice. That's the problem with quick videos like this. I only hope the people who watch this vid will watch it a few times to get most of it, and know enough about voice and be far enough along to have this make sense. I don't really expect beginners to get much here.

The best thing would be for you to see a talented VC if your not getting anything here. That way they can work with you at your level.

    Hope that helps.

    Drew

  • how long did it take you to learn to control your voice like that

  • @ashoka22 It took me longer than you'd think. things that I do with my hands behind my back now were once extremely hard. Most of all runs. I'd get lost..not know where to go...or couldn't control them like now. But it's getting GREAT coaching here and there and working at it over and over until it becomes second nature over time. I would say honestly...5 years maybe. With a lot of time in there not singing at all really..but my voice was still aging...growing up if you will.

    God bless

  • Hey Drew im thinking about buying Brett Mannings Singing Success Programme what do you think about the programme and have you ever used it yourself? Thanks

  • Hey diglit9, It's been years since i bought Bretts Package, so I can't say whether he's updated it, made it better etc. What I can tell you is that the one I have is a good package to get people started....and get you on course..but NOTHING is better than in house sessions tailored to your voice. They're just far and away a thousand times better. But if you're looking for a high end vocal package..his is as good as they come really. He guarantees it. Good luck.

  • Thanks alot Drew I really appreciate it.

  • hey it's amber again the 12 year old sooo my mother has been wanting to put me in vocal lessons because when i sing i always have to lift up on the high notes and on low notes my head goes like almost all the way down and it sounds like the crypt keeper

can you help me out? you can write back but i would like if you were to leave a video response!! thank you..... and god bless YOU!!!!

  • Hey rockstar226601, The best thing for you is to try and run a handful of good practices up and down the scales for now. up and down. Just let the tone go where it wants...and don't hold on to it...that will get you used to letting it go and keep you from holding onto the notes too much. Soon you'll get it. Also remember, you're 12, i couldn't sing until I was 19!! But there's no reason not to get started now...Good luck! Drew

  • ok folsom prison blues is prob my favorite johnny cash song and i love free falling by tom petty. <3. im a big fan

  • american idol man..

  • hey, thanks for the tips. i love your voice.

could i ask, what was the name of the 2nd song you sang. - 0.43 - 1.00. its so catchy.??

    thanks, James

  • I think you mean "Free Fallin" It's a Tom Petty Song. GREAT song...and I love that album...Full moon fever. Check it out sometime

    Peace

    Drew

  • thank you so much Drew.

  • For most of you and to help drew out with this, at the 3:23 mark, hes talking about vocal fry and vocal cry. Its a great way to warm up the voice and release tension.

In the nay, nay, nay, is best to start that in chest, move up into mix, and then to head, then back down or start in head and then down to chest. which ever way feels best for you.

relax your shoulders, neck and jaw when singing.

I to have trained with brett Manning. Personally, the best training you can have.

  • what happened to your other vids

  • Hey Drew!! Do you have any tips for really getting the articulation in your runs and riffs? I would love to figure that out. Thanks man!!

  • Try to get your vibratos going...really deep..that quick back and forth up and down thing will get the part of your voice responsible for runs going good. Try and do them in an EEE if you can. That'll help get your cords together better than a splatted inarticulate tone. Hope that helps.

  • Very nice. :-) great job.

  • love the cat

  • Thanks so much, your a big help, i love your voice so much, your like an insperation to me!

  • hey thnx bro !!

  • I'd give anything to get just one hour of training from you, you are so good mastering the techniques and all.

Such a good singer, but you also know what you're actually doing!

You're more than a role model for me. I hope one day I'll be able to use my voice for even just the slightest bit like you do. thanks for your video, I'd love to see more!

  • Thanks so much....I love helping singers do things they never could before...it's fun.

    Wishing you the best!

    Drew

  • I second. His head voice is amazing!!

  • Wow, Timstime1970 sent me here..glad he did because you've got some useful information. I have a wide range and a little bit of power and my ear's pretty good but I want my singing to be better. I really want to be better and I'm already learning some useful stuff here. I do so love to sing, I love it a lot. Thanks for your help.

  • Sounds like you are doing the Vocal Fry. You worked with Manning didn't you??!! lol I've been working on singing using Eric Arceneaux youtube vids for months now. Thanks for the info!

  • yeah....He's a cool guy....and taught me more in 15 mins than a level 5 SLS Coach. AMAZING talent he is.!!

  • can u explain how u do tht thing idk how its called but at 0;54 u do it like freee faaaalliinng ..etc thts so hard to do

    thnx anyway

  • Narrow vowels are the hardest to do...EEE is especially hard for men. It takes that nasty whine you hear. Practice narrowing your tone a bit to hit that. Truth is...it can be cheated to sound like a mix when it's not, but that's another story.

What you're hearing is my trying to stretch into the next register. If I'd pulled up and said..FRAAAAY..FRAAAy FAAALAAN...it would have pulled too hard & since that note is high I purposely narrow it and squeeze. Too much truth be known. But it works.

  • SLS = Speaking Level Singing correct?

  • you got it.

  • awesome, thanks u a bunch!

  • Dude, you kill me. LOL...great video! Thanks

  • Hey drew awesome video thanks for this before watching this video i was trying to sing auto tuning my voice still cant sing xD thanks

  • Wow umm I can't sing but you did teach me something.

  • lol hey man thanks i requested this vid! and you came through thanks alot man!!

  • Sure thing man....i tried like 8 times to load the last vid..it never went...so i did this one and it still took me 4 tried or so cause my internet kept cutting out. I hope this helps.

    Peace

    Drew

  • does the drew kitty have magical singer powers as well? lol.

  • LOLO!! Nah...but I do have a joke about her being a prophesying cat....don't ask...

  • i love how you said you wanted it to be short it is like 10 minutes long lol just saying

  • LOL..more like 7 minutes...after all the horrible playing. =0)

  • bored on a sunday morning i see :)

  • Drew, great vid! My teacher was an old opera singer, If my memory serves when you are talking about open jaw and soft palet, you mean a full airflow utilizing the vocal chords and the full mouth and nasal passages? At least that is what I Learned. Also you did not mention the importance of the use of the diafram muscle for breathing excercise. Are they teaching different these days? Just wondering. Great advise you suggested though, haven't heard much of this in years.

    Best Regards

  • most people know they need to sing from their "diaphragm" but in all truth..can you move your diaphragm? I think it's more about stomach muscles.,breathing deep and dropping your tone. Most of us singers (myself included) pinch our tone in the middle of our chest or throat. It stinks cause it's not easy to drop your tone..but if you can, you're good. also...Don;t think so much about "shooting" the tone to your nose or wherever..it should just go if it's open..remember it;s a continual process.

  • What I mean by that is that the tone shifts incrimentall to the pitch..so where an F sits...won't be where the G or Bb sits. it's people who don't allow this...gradual changing from note to note who clench their voices...."compression" which locks them up. I must admits..i'm not the best singer...and technique is hard for me to get some days. But it's all about singing better than you were. hope that helps. Oh...and the "behind the soft palate thing should be as noticeable as most think.

  • Hey Drew, Thanks for the thoughts. However the Diaphram is the muscle surrounding the lower part of the rib cage, so it is used just as much as the stomach muscles to achieve more air flow or less depending on the "tone" for the vocals and how long a note is to be held. The point about the upper palet and nasal cavity as you pointed out is imperative to propper pitch and tonal quality that one hopes to achieve. I'm no expert and times have changed. And actually you do have a great voice! :-)

  • Do you go around all day singing random songs like that? lol I love it! Awesome

  • ALL the time. LOL...My neighbors must go NUTS!! =0)

  • haha love your randomness in the begin of the video!!! cute kitty cat :)

  • No, it's not "I will always love you". It's "I have nothing" by Whitney Houston.

  • LOL!! I was waiting for that!!.. I should have known...I'm a huge Whitney fan...just a brain fart. got the new album! "Nothin but love" is my fav"

    Peace!

  • DREW! UR SO INSANELY BRILLIANT!

  • I enjoyed this video. I am a vocal coach and have been doing it for over ten years. That was very entertaining but also good to hear what I've been teaching taught in different lingo and SO FAST, lol. I would love some of my more advanced students to study with you or even just listen to this video, some of them might get it, or not, who knows. But thanks for this video. I love your voice. Keep singing!

  • thanks !

    good bless on ya :)

  • Thanks for sharing this. I've sung in bands for years and I'm good as far as intonation and dexterity, but I've always hated my tone, and that's a result of never having any training. I've even read a few books but, I've never had it explained this way.

  • Wow thanks alot drew, that helped alot

  • wow that's really helpful

  • thanks drew...this helped me.

  • Nice video dude
