Many people, LDS or not, have stored food for long periods of time. Many people do believe there will be a war or some kind of natural disater. Think of it, if an EMP hits (Electro Magnetic Pulse) and ALL the power went out, what would be the best thing to have? Food/ water. This is just one of the many worst case senarios.
