Richard Bacon is such a tit - banging on about 3D like he knows what he's talking about. He's like a 14 year old with his outlook "it's like the picture comes out of the screen, it's amazing" - grow up and appreciate film, not box office.
Nolan and Inception ARE great. And they should have been awarded, or at least nominated. mark Kermode is so very right here. And since when was he proved wrong about Inception?
TS3 should have won best of the year, because it's the most artistically well made. Inception is a dumb action film with BAD cinematography. TS3 is a masterpiece. So why does Inception deserve to win?
kermode. ...... is way to up on inception...it is not a smart or even particularily original movie...it s a movie for mike bay fans who want to feel a little better about themselves. it is a patronizing marginally interesting diversion. certainly not even close to a work of ART
@RockBottomRiser21 .....and is certinly not a masterpiece...there is very little of an intellectual interest in the film. Even other nolan films like insomnia and memento are much more interesting.. and in someway relevant or related to a real viewer and real life, which all real art is.
Mark, Melissa Leo is the greatest! She will be winning Academy Awards for many years to come. She will be to the Oscars what the new York Yankees are to baseball. Leo the lion roars. Behold, "the Leo Dynasty!"
i do not think nolan should have been nominated, because 80 percent of his movies are all lacking one thing. Emotion for the characters. A director's job is to direct actors and make you care about them . The storyline for leo and his wife was uninteresting and weak. And the film itself, is boring. All of the other directors nominated did their job in making you feel for their actors. you could connect to them. Nolan attempted to do that but failed. which is why he is a "technical director"
@WalksBehindTheRose The definition of a director is to be in charge of the visual aspect of film, the actors come as one part of this. Inception was a very visual film, so it makes sense that the characters took the back seat and ultimately the film revolves around plot rather than story.

bacon irritated me here as well by reducing marks valid opinions to 'pet topics' - an opinion isnt a sweet filled with e-numbers which you consume and forget about, mark considers what hes saying and provides a measured argument, in spite of whether you agree with him. thats why hes a critic and richard bacon isnt
Whwen I think back to 2010, the first film I think of is 'Inception'. I think of 'The King's Speech', and as great as it was, it was NOT the best film of last year. Not by a long, long way.
I doubt Kermode would rate Inception as much had it been directed by some one like....ooooh I don't know....Guy Richie? and not Christopher Nolan. Im sure we'd be hearing more about the implausible, convoluted storyline, and how it "insists" upon itself.
@MrSyrett Maybe you're right. But Kermode was, funnily enough, one of few critics who seemed to share my disappointment with TDK, so then again, maybe not. And he liked Sherlock Holmes, didn't he? I know I didn't, but he did. I certainly don't think Inception was the film of the year, nor am I angry that Nolan wasn't nominated, but clearly Kermode's opinions aren't as biased as you say they are, or at least not in the way you say they are.
Inception is fucking awesome! I dont understand why it wasnt even nominated! Oh wells! I dont care, the oscars doesnt count for much these days, but I argee with Kermode, Inception is truely an awesome film!
Mark Kermode is a douche, end of. he says some good stuff and he delivers his opinions well but his hair...the way he acts....his whole persona screams douche
I totally agree with Mark that Kevin Spacey would be a wonderful Oscar host. He's very sharp and has respectability. Or how about the combo of Robert Downey and Jude Law. I bet they can attract the younger demographic. But if they can't find anybody, just call Hugh Jackman, the guy's awesome.
Even today, I still don't know how Kramer vs. Kramer won the best picture over Apocalypse Now and The English Patient won over Fargo. The Oscars aren't bad, but their nominee and winner choices are often questionable. At least they're better than the f***ing Golden Globes.
@uadfa Well Apocalypse Now is a very poor film really. 3 hours long with so much drivel. Its only the last 30 mins that is any good really. Kramer is a genius, classic, touching movie, masterfully directed.
@shawndimery You didn't get the point behind Apocalypse Now did you? I doubt you even read Heart of Darkness, the novella Apocalypse Now was loosely adapted from.
Inception was a load of crap from the "directing" stand point. 6000 academy members agree with me your co host agrees with me and many of the public agree. The Oscars are not called "this radio hosts favourite films" so go make your own if you want your own picks
If Richard Bacon thinks that whatever wins Best Picture at the Oscars IS the best picture for that year then god knows what he thinks of Taxi Driver or Raging Bull.
@bordarboy Not at all. We all disagree with Mark from time to time. For example I always feel uncomfortable hearing him praise Twilight. The problem we have with Ricard Bacon here is how he seems to think that winning an Oscar is the deciding point of what the film of the year is rather than your own opinion. Not to mention the fact his only real argument for 3D is "it's popular and a success" ignoring the actual problems with 3D that Mark addresses.
@GaiashKetoji Well, he has a point, often the true judge of the quality of a technology is the public's reaction to it. For instance, when the ipod was first released, many of the leading technology experts said that it was overpriced and pointless but thanks to overwhelming public support, it has proven to be one of the greatest innovations of the decade. The fact is, when you are dealing with an entertainment product there is only one judge, the majority.
@bordarboy That never effected the quality of the iPod. It just meant it was successful. Being popular is not a good judge of quality because there has been some real rubbish that has been popular.
@GaiashKetoji But what it does do is show that the expert might be incorrect in his assessment, many of Kermode's criticisms of 3d are to do with it interfering with the film but if the majority of people find it adds to their enjoyment then 3D is a success. My point is that in something as subjective as entertainment, expert opinion really counts for nothing if it runs counter to the majority opinion.
Kermode needs to climb out of Christopher Nolan's ass, he did not deserve a nomination! Inception was painfully average and dull, the characters were one dimensional, it was full of generic action sequences and half the dialogue was exposition. I've never seen Kermode articulate WHY Nolan deserved a nomination besides the fact that he thinks it's 'intelligent'. Er no it's not, it was simply convoluted and full of expository dialogue.
People seem to be getting very wound up about what is clearly a light hearted wind up... I guess maybe it's not clearly a wind up if you haven't listened to all their conversations in the past but however annoying Bacon can be, these aren't his actual opinions, he's just trying to get a rise out of Kermode.
As soon as this video started and i seen Bacon, I knew this was on a slippery slope down. The guy has no understanding that Kermode is a critique and it's job to give his opinion.
Kermode looked mighty pissed off. No respect what so ever for someone who has spent years building up reputation as one of the finest critiques in Britain.
Frankly, I couldn't give a monkeys about the oscars. In 1998, they screwed up completely when that rubbish with the boat swept the board and LA Confidential won next to nothing. It's all about money and who makes the most and not about quality. And Chris Nolan not even NOMINATED? Well that just sums up the damn oscars doesn't it?
zzzZZZ - exactly. The Culture Show Kermode Award lecture explained the Oscar-AMPAS scheme and why it's a rubbish event, in the first place.
The only watchable thing of that night was James Franco making small videos during the event on his smart phone - deconstructing the event behind the scenes.
What people seem to forget - this award-shows are not important at all?! Why care?
@ihnlChiv Excuse me? But by that logic, lets ignore Roger Ebert, Charlie Brooker, Ben Croshaw or any other critic ever because they review stuff they're "Not Good Enough To Create." You don't need to be skilled in a field to critique it, rather you need to be *knowledgeable*, which Kermode is. Ok, he is wrong at times, and a little over rated but the man knows his stuff, and is well respected (which by your logic appears to be, rather vulgarly, "Bumming") and people will defend that.
@AJBiskit sadly i only know of charlie brooker who from what i know, actually makes programs and writes books.plus he mainly reviews news media thus cant create it.i do realise with hindsight my comments were flippant but people do act like his word is gospel and it bugs me because he blantantly loves himself a ridiculous ammount.plus he keeps on going on about his phd.we get it.you're a doctor.a suprising ammount of actors have dropped out of phd's to pursue hollywood dreams.
@ihnlChiv Yeah, I'll concede that Kermode does seem to like the sound of his own voice a bit too much. I'd recomend looking up Roger Ebert, he's one of the more well renowned American film critics, and Ben Croshaw you might also know as "Yahtzee" of Zero Punctuation fame. And as it happens, Mark Kermode has written at least 1 book, but having not read it I can't pass comment on it's contents.
Sometimes people on this channel like to say that Simon Mayo is annoying, but look at this guy! I'd rather have Simon sitting vis-à-vis Kermode than a person half as annoying as the one in this video.
Richard Bacon saying that Mark was proven wrong about film of the year by the Oscars. Allow me to point out the big flaw with that statement. Opinions aren't right or wrong and in the end like all award shows the Oscars come down to the OPINIONS of individuals.
The Academy thinks The Kings Speech is film of the year, Mark thinks it's Inception and I think it's Toy Story 3. None of us are wrong we just have different tastes in film.
People don't tune in to listen to some tool insulting their favorite film critic. They tune in to listen to their favorite film critic! O Simon, where art thou!?
A real critic should actually have been in the industry, made something of themselves in that industry THEN be allowed to critique the subject. Be it film, food or music.
@rhb999 By that logic no one should ever be allowed to express their opinion on anything without making something in whatever category the thing you're talking about it. People who bring up the "critics should make something in the industry they discuss" only say this because a critic has said something negative about something they liked.
You don't have to have made a movie to know if a movie is good or not. You don't need to write a book before criticising another.
Mark Kermode mentions how Christopher Nolan deserved to get nominated, Inception was the best film of the year, 3D isn't as good as people say, and how good Kevin Spacey is. Today, he's my favourite person.
Inception should have been rewarded purely for the direction on Joseph Gordon Levitt's corridor walk scene. I'm surprised Kermode didn't mention The Illusionist missing out to Toy Story 3
Think back to 2005 when Brokeback Mountain lost out on Best Pic, who remembers that movie about racism in LA as opposed to the movie about the gay cowboys?
Kings Speech is a great film, but it's Black Swan, True Grit, Inception and The Social Network which will become classics. Awards don't make classics and sometimes winners become martyrs. Go figure.
I gotta hand it to Bacon though, nice to see him confrontational against Kermode.
The Oscars voters are always going to be the older generation. Once you have that in mind the Oscars become very predictable. As long as a film gets nominations in the right places, that's what counts.
Richard Bacon. Not one degree of separation from Kevin, but sitting flat on the face of stupidity! If Mayo pulled a sicky and he jumped in last minute, okay. Actually, not okay! This vacuous idiot has been batted amongst just about every media channel in the UK. Are we really that short of talent?
Sorry, but i'm fed up this ideal that the kings speech is the only British winner. Christian Bale won best supporting actor, he's British, but was not even recognised by his own country, same with Christopher Nolan, British director, and not backed up. Plus the tech awards for Inception were awarded to Brits.
@ToBePhair I think Kermode is a flawed film critic. I like him as a personality and he has great knowledge of films, but I find his reviews and opinions are, well, too opinionated. I know that sounds like a moronic thing to say, but allow me to amplify. He gave the Hangover a terrible review, citing that he spent his Bachelor party in a cinema on his own watching a 60mm screening of The Exorcist. This for me says a lot.
@ToBePhair I think he is a Horror movie expert, and a great intellect when it comes to that particular genre. As a film critic, a critic of general cinema, he is far too narrow and biased with his reviews. In my opinion there should be someone else at the helm, someone else as our main British film critic (NOT Claudia Winkelman)... and Mark Kermode should spend his time working in and refining the horror genre it what ever capacity he can. I do agree with a lot of his reviews, however.
The Oscars are meaningless.

Richard Bacon is there to make the Doctor look even better. Toy Story was definitely better in 2D
Al3xki 1 year ago 2
Richard Bacon saying that Mark was proven wrong about film of the year by the Oscars. Allow me to point out the big flaw with that statement. Opinions aren't right or wrong and in the end like all award shows the Oscars come down to the OPINIONS of individuals.
The Academy thinks The Kings Speech is film of the year, Mark thinks it's Inception and I think it's Toy Story 3. None of us are wrong we just have different tastes in film.

People don't tune in to listen to some tool insulting their favorite film critic. They tune in to listen to their favorite film critic! O Simon, where art thou!?
damselwithadulcimer 1 year ago
A real critic should actually have been in the industry, made something of themselves in that industry THEN be allowed to critique the subject. Be it film, food or music.
rhb999 1 year ago
@rhb999 By that logic no one should ever be allowed to express their opinion on anything without making something in whatever category the thing you're talking about it. People who bring up the "critics should make something in the industry they discuss" only say this because a critic has said something negative about something they liked.
You don't have to have made a movie to know if a movie is good or not. You don't need to write a book before criticising another.

terminegger 1 year ago
Mark Kermode mentions how Christopher Nolan deserved to get nominated, Inception was the best film of the year, 3D isn't as good as people say, and how good Kevin Spacey is. Today, he's my favourite person.
rory66666 1 year ago 2
Inception should have been rewarded purely for the direction on Joseph Gordon Levitt's corridor walk scene. I'm surprised Kermode didn't mention The Illusionist missing out to Toy Story 3

I hated Inception, so sick of hearing about how it should have been nominated for everything.

Awful review, just mark banging on about the same things he's being going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about.
Nolan didn't get a nomination because the performance's in Inception were average.
Kings Speech can fuck off.

Who is this prized tool calling the good doctor wrong?
ToBePhair 1 year ago 70
@ToBePhair I think Kermode is a flawed film critic. I like him as a personality and he has great knowledge of films, but I find his reviews and opinions are, well, too opinionated. I know that sounds like a moronic thing to say, but allow me to amplify. He gave the Hangover a terrible review, citing that he spent his Bachelor party in a cinema on his own watching a 60mm screening of The Exorcist. This for me says a lot.
SethHesio 1 year ago
@ToBePhair I think he is a Horror movie expert, and a great intellect when it comes to that particular genre. As a film critic, a critic of general cinema, he is far too narrow and biased with his reviews. In my opinion there should be someone else at the helm, someone else as our main British film critic (NOT Claudia Winkelman)... and Mark Kermode should spend his time working in and refining the horror genre it what ever capacity he can. I do agree with a lot of his reviews, however.
