I'm a novice. Does it always swirl to the same direction, left or right? Like how water turns one way down a drain in the northern hemisphere and the opposite in the southern hemisphere?

I couldn't agree more about there being more than one field effect with magnets. I've been thinking about magnetics and electric fields... you're onto something. I'm very interested in this. There's a guy who has rewound a tesla coil with a certain pattern/ratio sacredly geometric, I believe, and he's, supposedly, having some interesting effects. This is very exciting.
