The most important thing is not to be caught off guard with it. Be aware of it, whenever someone is within range of doing it to you. The defense for the actual is to either move out of range or raise one knee and bring it across your centerline, blocking the kick with your shin.
I've seen dozens upon dozens of BJJ black belt MMA fighters be in this top position. I've never seen this move actually utilized in MMA and it's shocking that such a simple move is not performed by black belt MMA guys. They should learn Sambo :-)
@pcjudosambo I started in Judo but I prefer BJJ and Sambo and honestly I leanrt this technique (Monoplata) from my purple belt instructor and I am still a white belt. Serginho Moraes from Alliance HAS DONE this technique to a triangle in MMA. Love Sambo though, I didn't wanna to start a discusion.
@Dudongo86 really? Interesting, I've never seen this done in MMA. I believe you though. Judo is nice to know but if you are learning Sambo & BJJ, it almost nulls Judo in it's entirety. The only thing that I love in Judo that I hate in BJJ is that throws and quick submissions is utilized ... this makes the grappler more precise. Then again, Sambo emphasizes on quick submissions as well & their leg locks are devastating in all of grappling. No wonder many BJJ black belts cross train in Sambo.
@pcjudosambo I did Judo for a year (07-08) and then has been BJJ with some laid off in between, I have never done Sambo because there's only a new school in the capital and now I am working in Canada. About being precise I am not sure, even the black belts in Judo are too much Ude Garami and Sode Guruma Jime from the top, too desperate, they do not play like in BJJ where even if you are going hard use more deception, of course Judo is great but I just like the basic takedowns.
@Dudongo86 My sensei is a 2nd degree black belt in Judo but he practices and knows Russian Judo, which differs from American judo. Russian judo has been influenced by Russian Sambo, thus their ground skills are excellent. American judo is horrible in newaza (ground grappling) but if you go overseas like Europe or some asian countries, their newaza is excellent and on the same level as BJJ. Lets not forget, modern judokas like Mike Swain, Yoshida, Aoki, Kumoro are excellent in newaza.
thats cool but it wont work if the guy is stronger then you

@pcjudosambo I know, I have family in France but I still doubt they are at the same level as BJJ, depends of the rules maybe,
