@CalifornianGuitarist Please do! Though it's B&W, it's still one of the loveliest movies for them both! Fun for all is handsome Peter Lawford, and "down-to-earth" Gloria Grahame! You'll love it! Thanks for writing.
@filmfanatic128 Yes I have, and really like it too! I'm a big KG fan, and though Frank Sinatra sang it 1st in the movie, I think she gave him a run for his money with this reprise. Thanks so much for your comment! Happy Holidays!
LOVELY! Just LOVELY! So delighted to have stumbled across this! I"ve been a Kathryn Grayson fan for over 55 years, but had never heard her sing this before! WHAT A TREAT!!!This is my favorite new discovery of the day! Thanks for posting this!!!
@annielouism Thanks to annielouism! Some of us are still around, and will always revere the likes of wonderful Kathryn Grayson! Wonderful to hear from you!
I've listened to music from pretty much every era and genre, and I could never pick out a particular rendition as the 'best'. Until my grandmother told me to look up Kathryn Grayson and I stumbled upon this song. I can't even begin to describe how perfectly pure her voice is. Fantastic beyond words...
@Skepsikyma Thanks so much for your comment! Your grandmother certainly knows her performers! Haven't seen the film for a long time, and the introduction of the song is attributed to Frank Sinatra, but Kathryn Grayson made it her own. My best wishes to you and your very wise grandmother!!
@ogijjgroluan Thanks so much for your comment! Those times, sadly, will never be repeated in our lifetime. I really loved Ms. Grayson, and miss her a lot.
@Pearlxo Hi Pearlxo! I "was" born during that time, but wish I'd been born in the mid, late 30s! That way I wouldn't have had to wait so long to hear Ms. Grayson sing this song! Thanks so much for your kind remark! I think the "drifting feeling" affects a great many people! Wonderful to hear from you!
@varadero1839 Ahhhhhhhhhh!! I am so proud to say I was born in March 1935!!!!!!!! @voltape You are so very fortunate! You have been a witness to some truly astounding happenings from all around the world, for many years. I do envy you! I'm just delighted that you and many other people have found this less than 2 minute song to be so uplifting. Classic Grayson; reading her song then when it comes to the "you" a look to the main guy. I love it. It should be in every movie musical (and almost is : D )
This video is great. I've never seen Frank Sinatra and Peter Lawford looking so handsome--and kath Grayson is beautiful. If my dad was alive today--he would have never quit watching this clip. In fact --I'll probably watch it -at least 200 hundred more times--just for the wonderful memories that it brings up. Thanks Varedero.
@blazingsaddlesful Thank you right back! Think they all still bring back happy memories for many of us. Sad to know they're all gone, but they left us so much.
she had an outstanding voice and presence. And those love sick puppy eyes of Peter Lawford- that was one of his standard poses. great clip. thanks for sharing.
I, like all others on this site, was shocked that the world was just deprived of such a beautiful person. My real shock was that TCM has not seen fit to offer some of the films in tribute to her passing.
Oscar month is not a good month to pass. I think they will honor her soon. The movie this comes from "It Happened In Brookylyn" would be a good start. The Robert Osbourne interview should be repeated in April. She was not only a beautiful outer person but a beautiful inner person ALWAYS looking for the goodness within those she surrounded. As mentioned she would not write a tell all kiss all book requested by a publisher. If there ever was an angel who graced the silver screen it was Kathryn.
I could not agree more with your post.! I seriously doubt that TCM will give her the tribute she deserves. They should have done it long ago. Shame on them for their ignorance and stupidity!!!
When I did an autograph show with her we instantly developed a good repore. Nothing artifical about her. Had a great sense of humor and was always interested in other people's lives, encouraging them. She taught voice at Idaho State and donated both time and money to the school. She helped many a potential singer and did so from her heart first. She was a VERY SPECIAL lady . Stunningly beautiful in her day she maintained an inner beauty that made her radiate even more so later in her life.
It's so wonderful to hear from someone who'd actually known her! Think she was universally loved, but your remarks just seem to send home the "real" Kathryn! She was an elegant, beautiful, incredibly talented and all-around great individual. Still hard to think she's gone.
@varadero1839 Nice comments my friend I still find it hard to think of Kathryn gone. We wrote to each other for over twenty years often just Christmas cards but she never for got me nor I her very special lady in every way!!
A publisher wanted Kathryn to write a kiss all tell all book. She would not. She really loved people and ALWAYS tried to see the best in them. The blue collar workers at the studio all loved her. She treated them with total respect and did not have a pecking order to one's importance. Those regular folks always clammered to do favors for her. Example, If arriving at the studio when raining they made sure she did not get wet but did not do so for the "stuck up' actresses that dominated the studio.
I'm so sad I found out at the Oscars that Kathryn passed away. No tribute to her? No Access Hollywood special? She was a true talent and no one seemed to make notice.
The "compare and contrast" to todays poor excuse for "entertainment" makes me weep. At least through the blessing of technology, we still have access to the classics.
Kathryn was a great gift she leaves much behind her the world is a little sad at her leaving but the light she leaves behind her will shine forever. Much missed R.I.P.
Kathryn had strabismus. Usually it means your cross eyed. But in KG's case her eyes focused in different directions. It really set her eyes apart. You noticed there beauty immediately. Even in her 80's they were sensuous.
God was she ever beautiful! She had a eye disease that in her case made her look more beautiful. Every once in a while I run across somebody with Kathryn Grayson eyes. Frank did a number with Jimmy Durante in this film which is a classic. Frank really did a good imitation of Jimmy with Jimmy in a routine posted on you tube. Movie is called It Happened In Brooklyn. I really miss the people from this era through the early 60's. Thet did not call it the Golden Age of Entertainment for nothing.
Yes, she had a little squint on her right eye, I think, which you can see in certain situations. But that little imperfection only added to her charm.
KG had a great sense of humor and always just wanted to be "one of the guys". She treated her fans as equals and always had a kind word about everybody. There were rumors about not getting along with Mario Lanza that were unfounded. She had a good relationship with him. I did an autograph show featuring her and Howard Keel. A total class act with a great sense of humor. I miss her already. I might tell you the thing that that happened that I made her belly laugh. I was a little bit naughty .
Kathryn at age 11 was discovered by a janitor performing in an empty opera house in St Louis. He referred her to an opera star who saw her potential. The rest is history. Everyone was so protected of her. When it rained when arriving at the studio the doorman would escort her and leave the other stars to fend for themselves. She did not want to act but Kathern Hepburn told her she thought she was the best young actress in the business. She changed her direction and acted and did not go opera .
A beautiful singer , I loved her and Howard Keel in my favorite MGM musical "Showboat", She could sing and act , a very talented and gracious lady. RIP Kathryn.
She really had the most wonderfully pretty voice, and really understood her instument so very well, and unlike so many opera singers today, she didn't sound odd when singing popular music.
She'll give some of the angel voice's in heaven a run for the money for sure!...God bless her.
I was stunned to hear that Kathryn just died ( Feb 17). Her physical beauty and amazing voice wrapped into one can only come from an angel. She graced our presence in a troubled time. I e-mailed her to wish her a happy 88th. In the e-mail I said I do not believe you were born. I think you dropped in from heaven for while to bring some happiness to a troubled world. Nobody as beautiful as you and who could sing like you could be human! She is back home again being an angel. I miss her already.
It's called It Happened in Brooklyn. Jimmy Durante is also in it. Frank also sings the same song. Kathryn outsang him ,and I'm a big Sinatra fan! She was stunningly beautiful with a voice to match. Louis Meyer hired her on the spot. He heard her sing on the radio and when meeting her he, like the rest of us , had a hormone attack. By all accounts a reallly nice person off the stage.
thankss!! =) & ya i totally agree though i love frank i have to admit she sings it even more beautifully. but i love frank so much even though no one else my age even knows of him; people nowadays didnt have genuine talent the way they did back then.
Your train trip, and hopefully the balance of your time with your mom must have been as beautiful as she was! Delighted to hear from you! Muito obrigado!!
I was three to four years old at the time. I had this song somewhere in the deep of my mind. My wife and I went to the movies the other day and saw "Julie & Julia". The song was there and the train trip came to my mind immediatly. I remembered my mom mumbling the song (she did not speak any English) while we crossed the state. I imagine she had seen the movies with Ms. Grayson some time before we moved. That was August 1948.
Happy 88th Kathryn.( Feb 9th) You are the best! Kathryn Grayson( Her real name was Zelma) actually out sang Frank in this song .That is very hard to do. Both sang it in this movie. When Louis Meyer met Kathryn he hired her on the spot. A stunningly beautiful lady and an even more beautiful singer. She go's under the rador screen of super stars. Love ya . May you have many more birthdays.
I second that emotion. Nobody could put over a song like Ms. G! Great thing is, she's still with us teaching young folks how to make it real. Thanks so much for your comment!!
So romantic and innocent, this is an absolute treat. This type of music is precious, no one sings this way anymore as far as I know. The only voices similar to this are Frederika Von Stade and Monica Whicher. Miss Grayson made it seem easy and natural. Much of the "music" these days is garish, loud, and mechanical, often the lyrics are either childish, filthy, or both. Why can't we have more of this wonderful musicianship today? Thanks for posting this gorgeous video.
You're welcome! I agree with you and also long for "the old days." Composers knew their stuff, lyricists were brilliant and the performers didn't need to wear a "mike" on their head to be heard 16 feet away. Thank you!!
Jule Styne wrote so many beautiful songs, that he undoubtedly belongs to the top of Hollywood composers of the 20th century. I would be tempted to say that this is one of them, but that would be unfair to all the other gems he gave us.
I agree with you! Jule Styne was a genius and one of the best! Also, his career lasted so long that he thrilled many generations. Thanks for your comment. As "justpeachy130" mentioned, it's rare to hear Ms. Grayson perform this way; also a treat!!
Right on the money! Under those dulcet, operatic tones I think she really could have been an equally successful singer, using a different register. Thank you!!
I didn't know Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson did another movie. 'Anchors Aweigh' was quite good. I'll have to check this one out.

The song was there and the train trip came to my mind immediatly. I remembered my mom mumbling the song (she did not speak any English) while we crossed the state. I imagine she had seen the movies with Ms. Grayson some time before we moved. That was August 1948.

If Kathryn sang the telephone book I would get emotional. Do not want to look at her to long. Do not think my heart could take it.

Her kind is gone forever, a classy lady with a beautiful voice. The music today is garbage,

I second that emotion. Nobody could put over a song like Ms. G! Great thing is, she's still with us teaching young folks how to make it real. Thanks so much for your comment!!

Grayson was way overqualified for Hollywood.
She had opera level technical abilities.

Thank you!!

!Gracias! I'm playing this over & over- rainy day & good music ! AHHHH
Eres de Varadero de veras??

Jule Styne wrote so many beautiful songs, that he undoubtedly belongs to the top of Hollywood composers of the 20th century. I would be tempted to say that this is one of them, but that would be unfair to all the other gems he gave us.

I agree with you! Jule Styne was a genius and one of the best! Also, his career lasted so long that he thrilled many generations. Thanks for your comment. As "justpeachy130" mentioned, it's rare to hear Ms. Grayson perform this way; also a treat!!

Where are voices this beautiful in our age...?? Too bad most music is not so sweet anymore. This is beautiful

Right on the money! Under those dulcet, operatic tones I think she really could have been an equally successful singer, using a different register. Thank you!!

Thanks for posting this gem!
I'd really love to hear KG sing this in her lower register, letting those naturally smokey tones shine through.:)

Time after time
I tell myself that I'm
So lucky to be loving you.
So lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening, when the day is through.

The passing years will show
You've made my love so young, so new..
Time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky to be loving you.
