I'm JB welding my XL clip point 2011 voyager right now! I have black krylon waiting too. I think I'm gonna get that bad boy mission spec'd in the congo pattern! Then ad some grip tape on the back of the lock bar and debating about behind the clip for reverse grip. Just showing some love nutn! I told my sister to get me a fear no evil shirt (or two) for Christmas hopefully she listened lol. Happy holidays TNP crew! (Veri included =D)
i just wanted to say thank you for posting this. i preformed this mod on my recon 1 and it has helped out a lot. I will also be doing it to my mini ak47
Dude I saw this video for the first time today. Probably the best youtube video I've seen on a knife mod. I plan on doing the same to an old Spyderco I have. Thanks
@FatalParalax Looks like a 5 or a 6. Might be slightly larger, but if you get a torx driver similar to what nutn has, it usually comes with about 8 different sized bit heads on 4 different bits.
@ThePublicAwareness1 I just did a quick sand job on mine and it works 10x better deploying and it still looks the same as it did before just more smooth to the touch.
seems like it'd be easier to take the handle scale off, then sand it, so you could get something that looked decent without having to mess with as many steps.
Of course then you'd have to take the scale off, that might be too much work for some knives.
A great way to protect those holes from the JB weld is with Playdough. Bright orange is good so you can see when you've got it all back out afterwards.
I also think the reason for the grip under the clip is so the grip is still there if you swap the clip from side to side. Not to say that it shouldn't be smooth on both sides, but you've got a great fix. Thanks
got to tell you that at the midle off the project it looked really shity: but let me tell you the final pruduct sure turned out to be outstanding....... thanks for sharing.
@topguntin I have no idea but if I had to guess I'd say T6. Here's a tip. Go to Sears with your knife and they have ones unpackaged and you can test em out to figure it out.
slightly sanded my recon 1, looks better than using jb weld because theres still g-10 scales there under the clip but there just less aggressive and smooth. didnt have to bend the clip at all...... Nutnfancy, love the videos respect your opinion but this mod is just overkill.... To everyone watching this dont mess with the jb weld just use some fine grit sand paper and your done.
@sandman503 220grit sand paper and 30 sec. and your done. Put clip back on and bend up to make it easier to get into pants.. that's it, your done!!!!!! You just want to take the edge off. No damage and it looks the same, but feels smooth!!!! YOUR right!!! Thanks for the advice!!!!!! PS: That clip is really tight!!!!!
Hmmmm I saw that blip on why not to sand, but that reason is unconsequensial, because both can be fixed easy. After sanding just bend the clip a little bit to make up for the extra space in between, and as for looks jbweld just looks plain chitty! My video shows how to do it properly and how it looks afterwards, with all that glue, suct tape, and paint that knife is going to look like TRASH after a whilre of using it as an edc. EVERYONE! Take a look at my video BEFORE taking sooo much time....
Thanks for the demo. Really worth the effort. Try this small mod to your process. Put the cotton in the recessed screw hole as before but then drip a bit of candle wax on top. Scrape it flush. Ready for the JB weld. I also did that on the clip screw recess. Worked a treat.
Just did the JB pocket clip fix on my 5.11 investigator. Much better! Still holds tight to the pocket but doesnt take off a layer of denim every time i put my knife in and out of my pocket. THanks for the video and idea. BigWilly450
i would just tape everything up even the cut outs in the handle + the part where the cutout for the clip is ... then i would look for tiny sized wooden stick that fits just into the screwholes in that way u dont need to worry about cotton balls or tape comming off and going into the holes , then i would rub the paste on quickly , let it dry and just file the paste off that's too much , in that way u have a much smooter surface but the file leaves a texture too so it wont be totally smooth either
i tried this and royally fucked it up i didnt use gorilla tape and the jb weld leaked threw the tape i was using. is it possible to get rid of the jb weld
I did the J.B. Weld modification that you showed in this video, only I did it with my Cold Steel Large Clip Point Voyager, and it came out great! It slides in and out of my pocket now without ripping my pants pockets up. Thanks for posting this video, it is a great idea and it works!
Since the J.B. Weld modification was successful with my Large Voyager, I'm going to do it on my Cold Steel XL Tanto Voyager. You're right, Cold Steel needs to work on the pocket/handle texturing.
Love this mod. I have a question for those that know JB Weld very well. The threads on my from swivel stud on my rifle don't hold the stud anymore. I was wondering if JB Weld would be able to secure the swivel stud and hold my harris bipod on it while being able to withstand the shock and recoil of the rifle? Thanks.
you may not like this comment ,,,, what you are doing is absolutely unnecessary if the clip is not on the knife ,,,,, there are other ways to carry ,,, and not with a clip on the knife ,, some day knife people will wake up and see the light ,,, spyderco hyped the clip yrs ago , my grandfather had a clip on his knife and took it off ,,,, best mod is to order a knife without a clip and use another method of carry thanks al the pal
@heettreet The reason knife clips are so useful is because they carry in a standard location. Wear your knife without the clip in slacks, or other deep pocket pants, where the knife can turn sideways, and is constantly bouncing against your leg as you walk. The knife clip is a great addition to any knife, if you don't like it, take it off. The more options you have for carry, the better.
@LokiEvryn yes i agree with everything you say ,, but ,,, you miss the point ,, if i told you what i do , some knife company would hype that and make and save tons of money ,, think , what can you do so that a clip is not necessary , thanks for the reply , its a nice one ,,,,,,al the pal
@Nutn- you EASILY have the most well thought out and attention keeping videos on the tube. (which is hard for me and my 5 second attention span). others can be just as well informed and are good at showing us how to handle their varieties of products (other than guns n' knives) but your's are just fun to watch man...bravo...you need a show on cable...lol
Rig up a piece of flat metal the size you want, heat it up, melt the ridges flat...DONE.
I use a piece just a hair bigger then the clip. It's a lot quicker, no JB weld mess, no sanding, no paint, no drying time, and you still get that "Factory Cool" look your after.
hey Nutn i was wondering would you have to do this with the Kershaw Blur? i was thinking of getting one since you gave it a good review but it looks like it has grip under the pocket clip. was just wondering if it would hurt the pocket and if i would need to do this modification to it
the recon 1 has the same grippy texture and it would stick to the pocket especially in jeans and could be an issue when trying to deploy under stress.. i doubt that i will ever do this mod but it's great knowing these options..
it can be solved very simply by Cold Steel.. just put some kind of circle logo or some cool looking thing right on the spot where the clip touches the handle on both sides and dont texture it that hard.. ;)
Why not use some rage gold body filler? Just make a milk shake to fill in the G10, hit it with some 180 grit to knock down high spots! Once that's done sand it to finish.
Sorta unrelated to the video but something funny I discovered while using J-B weld... The steel portion literally has steel in it, I was repairing a high powered magnet and it sucked up all the glue! It was pretty surprising...
Anyway great video and good tips! Though I think I would opt more for the spyderco approach and only coat where the clip presses against the handle.
I really like your mentality put into words in this vid: "If you don't like it, change it." Beautiful. So easy to do, and the payoff in satisfaction (and pants saved) is forever. Well done, nutn.
I gave it a go on my CS Recon 1 2010! I used Devcon 2 Ton Epoxy. Waterproof, non-flammable, -60F to +200F, 30min working time (couldn't find the quick dry stuff).
I accidentally sanded away a bit of the surrounding G-10 texture, not much though. While sanding, dust got EVERYWHERE! so I ended up taking apart and cleaning the knife. That was the most time consuming part, aside from waiting to dry. I decided not to paint it (yet). Looks good without it! Thanks again for this Nutn!!
I just got this knife a few days ago and thought I would do this mod to it. I know Nutn' said not to sand it. But I used a very fine grit sand paper on a block and made about 10 light passes on the same are Nutn' uses the JB Weld. What it did is just to take off all the high sharp ridges. I cleaned of the dust with some WD40 and it looks great. The pattern of the grip is still there, but its very smooth and slides in the pocket easier. And the clip is still extremely tight and holds great.
Nutnfancy- I hope you hold out and tell Discovery to just take your work as it is... I can't believe they haven't taken it already. I really enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work!! Very entertaining and educational. Scott in Ohio
Sweet...My Smith&Wesson special tactical tanto is tearing my jeans, and even my cargo pocket on my uni....I will have to try this out! By the way Nutnfancy....Can you do a all in one review on the big 5 special knifes??? While I love high quality knifes, I especially love my S&W being that it was on sale for 5 bucks. Big 5 always has good knifes at great prices. I couldn't imagine using a high dollar knife in some of the not so pleasant aspects of my job.....I.E. messy coroner cases.
If you wanna make sure the jb weld or any other epoxy filler will last long don't forget to degrease the handle before applying the epoxy. You have lot of options. For an example you can dip it in 99% isopropyl alcohol. It evaporates and doesn't leave residue so the epoxy will stick better to the surface.
Seriously dewd, I would have have just taken the extra few minutes to tape it up better. Then I would have also spread the JB with an old bank/credit card. First fill the surface with the JB, cure, rough it and apply another thin layer with the card, cure and a light sanding to remove the gloss.
even though that you might not touch the handle under the clip in that position, cold steel probably put aggresive grip there beacuase what if the clip was in a nother position.........
Regardless of what people say about Cold Steel and regardless of what people say about Taiwan, this knife is fantastic. It's a great design and VERY well made. Looking forward to your review, Nutn.
I believe this knife is made in TAIWAN?!? - No way this ColdSteel should cost $65.(price at yourcornerstore) when they pay their chinese workers pennies per hour. Contrast the foreign-made Cold Steel AK-47 for $65. to the Sog Aegis digi-camo (see his review for that)for $66, that's USA made and I can't imagine why you'd want foreign made.
Love ya, Nutn - keep the knife vids coming. US made is not an insignificant issue to many of us. Please point it out and let us decide.
@ForbinColossus In TAIWAN people are not chinese they're taiwanese. The AK-47 is e very good knife for the money that's why I bought it regardless where it was made. The SOG Aegis is a very filmsy, cheap quality knife that's why nobody should buy it. If you can't see real value and quality in a knife of course you have nothing else to judge a knife but where it was made.
Yeah, I was getting ready to do a Nutnfancy JB Weld Mod(tm) on one of my new Recon 1s (ltspecpro 2 for $60 closeout). Taped and de-greased, ready to go when I discovered my JB Hardener had hardened solid in the tube.
As I had the sand paper right there and I hate to halt a project once begun, I started with the 220 and finished with the 400 grit.
Elapsed time about 20 minutes.
JB might be necessary on FRN, but G10 sands easy and smooth.
I did the mod to two of my knives! piece of cake to do! i suggest using the slow drying JB Weld the first time you attempt the mod. all in all excellent mod to my knives. To Nutn: What size torq screw is the AK?
Nutn - your knife turned out sweet. Thanks for posting your modification videos. I like your shop videos because they are step by step. I loved your RAT 1 duracoat video and this one is cool too. I'll be a TNP fan for life!
Thanks for this vid Nutn! I was using a marine type epoxy filler that was water proof. It would dry a tad to hard and eventually would chip off. I forgot all about JB weld! And man the stuff I used can only be bought in big containers that fun about 30 bucks LOL JB weld is the shit!
@MrHons77 That damages the clip and what if you bent it too far ?, that would damage it more. + if you bend it, it could be too loose and ultimately fall out of your pocket.
@hamickboy man like its realy good i can talk on youtube n no one dick around, i dont have many crkt prtoducts only 3 a hoook sawttoh n m16 ps the m16 was second hand so, ya man i lov you vids u r the man and the man to watch, ps thx dude u r the shit i live n canada i u do n your in novescotia , well geta hold each other i do coustom knives , n ya could see em.
thx man realy nice repile have a nice day n dop more aswome vids ps u lik killswitch engage
The CRKT Triumph has darn near the same G10 sandpaper-like scales. I sanded them down because they tore up my pocket. May not look as cool but it was quick. Well maybe I'm just lazy. It smoothed them out, but it's not slippery because of the grooves milled into it. But WTG NUTN!
@bdash1990 man like im realy get tired my my crkt saw tooth 2000 im lossing fath in crkt buti need a better example of there product to judge them. realy tho man im not impressed wbu? do u like them i realy wana kno if they work good for others n like was with that thin they do with the liner lock mines shit zitel m16 is shit
Well I've got 5 CRKT knives. There are only 4 in this pic which has all but 1 of my knives as i just discovered.
i50.tinypic(dot)com/24xlaie.jpg
But I like CRKT. They might be a little expensive, but I think that they use high quality materials. But let me know what youre looking for in a knife and I might be able to help you.
Nice video I have the same issue with my Spyderco Civilian which as my only EDC option in CANADA. Question: Instead of adding material why didn't you grid down the G10?
Very nicely done, Nutn. I like that you tackle all of these mods on your knives and guns (Glock mods). Really improves the product and you do a good job. Plus, i think we all enjoy being able to see you do it before we give it a shot. Thanks for sharing.
Cool vid Nutn I think I will do this to my Recon 1. I was sitting here with the whole family watching and when you dropped the paint can on the knife we all busted up laughing with you.
playing devils advocate here, but if a company was to change a handle to accommodate the pocket clip it would have to be done on both side for the leftys and righty who need to move the pocket clip. That would mean you would looks some grip on the handle on the side without the clip... could be a moot point since most grip is made more towards the blade than the back but it a reverse grip might be a factor.. just saying.. besides that, GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS! Can't wait for more! KEEP IT UP!
I just sanded the scale a little bit right under the clip and bended the clip back a little. You can't even see the smoothened area because it's only under the clip. It works perfectly and not ugly like this.
using cosmetic nail acrylic could work too

I'm always glad to see other people that modify everything they own.
Why manufacturers can't just know exactly what I want is beyond me!
Seriously, though; good job, man.

the recon 1 has the same grippy texture and it would stick to the pocket especially in jeans and could be an issue when trying to deploy under stress.. i doubt that i will ever do this mod but it's great knowing these options..

How about a couple of coats of clear nail polish ??
MrKing319 1 year ago
@MrKing319
You know how nail polish will eventually come off your fingers?
Same thing will happen here. It's not particularly durable for the long-term.
Orthrus 1 year ago
it can be solved very simply by Cold Steel.. just put some kind of circle logo or some cool looking thing right on the spot where the clip touches the handle on both sides and dont texture it that hard.. ;)
1fox3 1 year ago
Why not use some rage gold body filler? Just make a milk shake to fill in the G10, hit it with some 180 grit to knock down high spots! Once that's done sand it to finish.
TheOriginalJonesy 1 year ago

Thanks again for this Nutn!!

dude awesome, i use jb weld a lot, never thought of it as a traction reducer, and that music you had at the end kinda startled me. lol
astaschak 1 year ago
I just got this knife a few days ago and thought I would do this mod to it. I know Nutn' said not to sand it. But I used a very fine grit sand paper on a block and made about 10 light passes on the same are Nutn' uses the JB Weld. What it did is just to take off all the high sharp ridges. I cleaned of the dust with some WD40 and it looks great. The pattern of the grip is still there, but its very smooth and slides in the pocket easier. And the clip is still extremely tight and holds great.

Aww yeah man, that looks great! Man I wanna mod my '10 Recon 1! Great instructional, thanks again Nutn!

It evaporates and doesn't leave residue so the epoxy will stick better to the surface.
hantasanta 1 year ago
@hantasanta I know Nutnfancy degreased the handle. I just wanna point out it's importance.

I was thinking about buying the new cold steel ak 47, and since this doesn't seem to be too hard of a fix, I'm just waiting for a review. Can't wait!
AkeelaTheGhost 1 year ago
Seriously dewd, I would have have just taken the extra few minutes to tape it up better. Then I would have also spread the JB with an old bank/credit card. First fill the surface with the JB, cure, rough it and apply another thin layer with the card, cure and a light sanding to remove the gloss.
The holes could be filled with some wax.
jasonuscg 1 year ago
Perhaps a Dremel would work a little better with the sanding due to small area. Just a thought. Nice job.
pcicero18 1 year ago
even though that you might not touch the handle under the clip in that position, cold steel probably put aggresive grip there beacuase what if the clip was in a nother position.........

would it dull the delica using it to scape things off of the AK-47?

Regardless of what people say about Cold Steel and regardless of what people say about Taiwan, this knife is fantastic. It's a great design and VERY well made. Looking forward to your review, Nutn.

Nice work, dude!
MrNikitos4744 1 year ago
I believe this knife is made in TAIWAN?!? - No way this ColdSteel should cost $65.(price at yourcornerstore) when they pay their chinese workers pennies per hour. Contrast the foreign-made Cold Steel AK-47 for $65. to the Sog Aegis digi-camo (see his review for that)for $66, that's USA made and I can't imagine why you'd want foreign made.
Love ya, Nutn - keep the knife vids coming. US made is not an insignificant issue to many of us. Please point it out and let us decide.
ForbinColossus 1 year ago

Just don't breathe the dust

Thanks for this vid Nutn! I was using a marine type epoxy filler that was water proof. It would dry a tad to hard and eventually would chip off. I forgot all about JB weld! And man the stuff I used can only be bought in big containers that fun about 30 bucks LOL JB weld is the shit!

what about just sanding down the g10 around the clip area?
ohTHATidiot 1 year ago
i know it makes it loose but to me its cheaper and a little more easer to get it in and out of your pocket thats just what i did with a few of mine

This comment has received too many negative votes show
you have no life. btw thats not an AK-47 retard.
muffinfever1 1 year ago
you could of bent the clip back a little so it don't grip your pocket so tight
MrHons77 1 year ago
@MrHons77 That damages the clip and what if you bent it too far ?, that would damage it more. + if you bend it, it could be too loose and ultimately fall out of your pocket.

My guess is that the handle is molded under the clip so you can change sides of the clip and keep the same aesthetics on both sides.

If you're sanding G10, DON'T blow it around... it's fiberglass, so use a respirator and vacuum up all the dust.
Otherwise, cool vid Nutn

Is the handle hard anodized? If so, sand away, it'll be fine :)

that's nicely done ! i dig it ;)
viniv20 1 year ago
playing devils advocate here, but if a company was to change a handle to accommodate the pocket clip it would have to be done on both side for the leftys and righty who need to move the pocket clip.
