  • Why the hell is the last note cut off?!?!?!

  • she's already old, i think Lisitsa takes her place// hehe

  • She makes it look so effortless. Hands just floating across the keys.

  • @rcmsrm indeed

  • Qué linda era!

  • @RodrigoHerrero1 ¡Que linda es!

  • i always love her play... greatest pianist inthe world...

  • I cant believe Ruubinstein has much views than this....although this performance is awesome as well, listening to Rubinstein is much more enjoyable

  • @mikespeir: why did no one else bother to show up? They didn't know ahead of time that Ms. Argerich would be there! :)

  • I <3 chopain

  • @Zimtstarli i love chopAin 2 XD

  • ...God, I was going to have all this fun bitching just how lousy this perf. is, but before I got the chance I fell in love with Martha...fuck, love will do that to you...

  • aww you miss the last chord!!!

  • 6:17 a lil "oooopsieee" LOL, but other than that i think its a superb performance

  • Is this a different key than the original version? I have it in the key of c sharp minor??

  • @pinkmusicians Or E Major...

  • Absolutely awesome!!! All the best, in any field really, have an air of spirituality about them - one wonders if Martha is playing the piano, or is the piano playing Martha? I'm shaking here.

  • i dont know if everybody realises just how goddamned difficult this piece is. Its awesome watching the great pianists play something most average pianists would never master

  • o DAM!

  • all i could do at the end of this piece was gap and say oh my god!!, my jaw almost hit the floor

  • i felt it was awkward a lot of the time, but she played the end with such precision and authority. gives chills it sounds so awesome.

  • This piece sounds nice in D minor......Way to go Ms Argerich!

  • energetic powerful brilliant brisk

  • It would appear that 46 people need slapping. Who on earth could dislike such a sublime performance of such a great piece?

  • @bob280784

    sad haters :D

  • lol I like how it's in D minor instead of C# minor. It's kinda interesting actually. :)

  • im listening to the recording rite now. the con fuoco section is one of the best iver ever heard. fast but in complete control, very even and a wide range of color. truly transcendntal technique

  • Sometimes, when I watch and hear Martha Argerich, I just can't believe that what she does is possible (see the Liszt B minor Sonata). She is absolutely, absolutely amazing!!!

  • God help us all. She can stomp the piss out of everybody.

  • @1Thompsonmusic Hey, Thompson... it was bad enough when you were just trolling the videos. Now you are attacking the other commenters as well? Can I ask what the hell goes through your head when you are writing these comments? Seriously, why do you do it? I just don't get it.

  • Certified Intergalactic! Martha Argerich captured my wild imagination.

  • God, the way her thumb touches that D# (5:32). . . absolutely melting.

  • crushcrushcrushcrushcrush

  • And she was beautiful too.

  • She deserve the CHOOOPIN prize

  • Fucking Martha, man.

  • why did you cut out the last note...it was amazing she palyed. Thanks Mrs Martha.

  • does anyone know if this exact recording is availabe for sale? meaning her live performance of this piece and others at the chopin competition?

  • You are the best ARGERICH!

  • Why did anybody else bother to show up for the competition?

  • beautiful.

  • Question about the music: In the third variation of the fluttery passage theme, at 3:12, I thought the top note was an F-Sharp, but in this it sounds lower. Clarification please?

  • @forgottenbooks Or g-flat, rather.

  • @forgottenbooks maybe the old recorded video is to blame...

    have you reconsider that?

  • @caskett7lu - No. Because I've heard it in other pianists' recordings, too. And in Martha's newer recordings of the piece.

  • @forgottenbooks So..The key sounds lower in their recordings as well?

  • @caskett7lu - I don't remember which pianists they were. In their recordings, that particular fluttery passage seems to start off in a major key and end in a minor key, if you know what I'm saying.

  • @forgottenbooks More aptly, it seems to start off in the same key as the preceding fluttery passage but ends in the b-flat thing.

  • @forgottenbooks Well,I think I can figuire that..

but..I see you're so sure of it..

you have a delicate ear to notice that lower key..

    have you played this scherzo?

  • @caskett7lu Yeah, I'm learning it.

  • Comment removed

  • @caskett7lu - Wait, I remembered. Listen to Yundi Li's recording.

  • Besna kobila :))))) od uvek

  • Words cannot describe my admiration for this girl... wow. Just wow. At 6:49 ish - just before the (cut off) last note - it looks sort of like she is about to hit the wrong keys, and then changes her mind. I found that somewhat confusing/amusing. Can anyone offer a guess as to what happens there?

  • Chopin himself would be dumbstruck by this performance. It's child's play for Argerich!

  • Whenever I get uninspired about practice, I just watch this and it solves all my demotivations. Martha owns. Ownage!

  • Great piece. Disappointing last note.

  • 1Thompsonmusic, don't blaspheme the master.

  • I'm thunderstruck.

  • Holy s**t!!! I just can't believe that! Those ridiculous octaves and the way her hands flit across the keys in those little butterfly like passages--I've never seen anything like it! Like the other listener's comment--"she's NOT human"!!!!! Incroyable!

  • she makes it seem effortless . like walking on water

  • Comment removed

  • I love this piece =)

  • She is the best pianist ever...

  • @HJKey Ugh lets not go overboard here man, she WAS ONE OF the best pianists, but apparently you havnt watched enough pianists on you-tube to say that, and TRUST me, shes really good, but not the best pianist ever...

  • @1Thompsonmusic Funny listening to you just after reading that.

  • @1Thompsonmusic Hi! I read a lot of your comments. I noticed you have a very high standard for the pianists/musicians you watch..... I was wondering if you could recommend some musicians that you enjoy listening to? thanks. :)

  • @1Thompsonmusic I sincerely hope you realize how cocky and ludicrous your comment is. Honestly, who exactly do you think you are to be able to call Liszt a "second rate composer" who doesn't "compose from the heart"? I wouldn't call myself a fan of Argerich, but "forgetful", "boring", and "depressing" would be the last words uttered out of any of even her most passionate critics' mouths. Too fast, undisciplined, and boorish maybe, but "forgetful" and "boring"? Get over yourself, buddy.

  • @mmoynan

I really don't care what you think. I'll say what I like. I don't take youtube seriously anyway.

  • @1Thompsonmusic LOL. So there!

  • @1Thompsonmusic Liszt didn't compose from the heart? Have you even heard his late compositions?

  • @1Thompsonmusic You are just jealous because Martha is better than you!

  • @xaxaxaxaxaH

I'm not jealous of anyone piss off.

  • Amazing. But isn't this slightly sped up? It's in d minor instead of c# minor

  • WHO FUCKIN DARES TO DISLIKE THIS!?!?!?!? AMATEURS!!!!

  • I was in another window when I heard 6:11. I immediately shouted, "Good God" and flipped back. Argerich truly is a genius when it comes to piano performance. Too bad the ending chords were cut off.

  • @Kaggypants It's not that bad, the chord cut off was the very last one anyway, three octaves of C#.

  • @Kaggypants And yes, very much awesome.

  • @Kaggypants Don't worry, the chord slightly cut off was the very last one, three octaves of C#. And yes, very much awesome.

  • @Kaggypants you have to hear the recording from her debut recital album, for sound quality

  • @Kaggypants On her debut recital performance, that is my favorite spot. You can hear her fingers squeak on the descending passage. <3

  • Un-be-leavable =/! I know what I'm seeing/hearing, but my brain is refusing to accept it! She's playing it as if were some 1st grader's silly little recital piece. Barely moves her body, looks bored silly AND YET, the sound those fingers of hers produce is absolutely precise in technique and breath-taking in emotion. I swear, if I never get to hear her live in concert, I'll feel my life will have been deprived of a fundamental joy. Brava Marhta, brava infinity!

  • She plays like an angel..

  • Marthita por los palos, nomás !!!

No habrá ninguna igual, no habrá ninguna...

  • The people who say Martha lacked confidence are parroting the wrong sources. I've known Martha for over 40 years and had the pleasure of working with her on a few occasions. She never had a problem with confidence. What Martha hated about concertizing was all the attention, especially from the nosy and boringly repetitive media. She was and is a private person.

  • pretty woman

  • Every single part of his body is able to convey a strong emotion every time he touches a button.

  • Wow!!! this is amazing! the legato runs are awesome!!!

  • By God, that is a human being. Martha, if you ever need an organ donor, don't be shy, just get a hold of me. You can have two of them if you want.

  • As a failed student of the piano I'd have given anything to have her talent!

  • Holy crap, I Do really love her

  • NOOO!!! The last chord is missing! WHY!

  • She is amazing, one of the few who's got a gift to touch people's hearts.

  • Martha tu ne veux pas faire l'amour avec moi? :)

  • 42 people failed to learn this piece.

  • One of her greatest performances

  • Así es la cosa dijo Barbosa......

  • i feel bad for the guys who lost to he ): DX

  • I love her! She plays with an enviable combination of absolute control, while still conveying the spontaneity and suppleness inherent in the music.

  • It is funny how Martha OWNS certain pieces. such as this piece... Everyones performance is compared to hers, and yet they never really compare. It is the same with other pieces she plays such as Liszt Sonata.. .

  • @davidbaker03 Yes! Or like the Scarbo, or the finale of Prokofiev's Finale of the 3rd Piano Concert, I mean it's not like she's the only one I also think Pogorelich has some pieces like the 2nd Sonata (Chopin's) well maybe not the last Mov. but you know what i mean...

  • Perfect tempo...I wish she'd carried this sense of timing to other pieces--but it's impossible to deny her incredible skill, tone, and musicianship.

  • I can tell that during this competition she was SO nervous. She completely started a phrase over at around 5:35. Whoops! But she definitely deserved to win!

Still the best pianist in the world though ;)

  • @pianolitguy wtf are you talking about... she didnt start anything over look at the music again buddy

  • @lacheeky123 Oh wait I think there are several versions of this piece. My Urtext version does not have that phrase as played here. But really, she was so nervous! In her Polonaise she completely screws up the ending of a run. Not that that is the most important thing about playing piano, but she is such a technical beast! I guess I feel surprised when I hear wrong notes from her. But her touch is perfect, truly one of the best pianists ever to live, true winner of this competition

  • Llllllllllllllllet me be that piano!

  • Master of TIMING !!!

  • It doesn't get any better than this. WTF

  • @RollingIppo You make us sound like a cult. -_-

  • o i feel scherzed

  • sooo wonderful performace, pretty girl! O(∩_∩)O~

  • I don't really like this scherzo...

  • @cellobuddy The best... just taste it slowly .. very slowly..

  • is MART A no MARTHA!!!, Learn her name in her original lenguaje at least if you think that she is a really good pianist.

  • @favio100 in fact is MARTA... NO MART A ... and she is a really good pianist..

  • I want to go back in time and marry her.

  • I can't believe the highest rated comment on this amazing video is "she used to be pretty hot".

    Human beings are fucking disgraceful.

  • @SolarJakee she is though, a beautiful woman who happens to be one of the best pianists of the 20th century is quite an attractive concept.

  • @maestroadam Exactly, she's one the greatest of the 20th century, so why demoralize her into being this pretty little thing, when she's obviously a fucking hell of a lot more than that.

  • @SolarJakee I don't think we're degrading her, on the contrary, her physical beauty can only serve to enhance our admiration. Don't look too deeply into it!

  • @SolarJakee Yes , I agree but human beings on YOUTUBE you know.

  • @SolarJakee Unfortunately this kind of crud surfaces thanks to the unfettered freedom of self-expression this site allows.. It only serves to show us what "them average folk" are all about. Just submerge the garbage & allow the beauty of the gift to flow into your senses.. 'Tis a little gift from heaven, my friend.

  • .....so why the fuck does this vid not have the last notes???!?!?!?! Other than that, great vid.

  • I love the transition back into the main theme.

  • Although i like zimerman more, i admit that martha is the best

  • and who the hell r u??!

  • I assure you she is still very beautiful - radiant reall!

  • I love her!

  • Awesome * * * * *

  • The hottest pianist of all ages!

  • She's not human.

  • such an unfortunate mistake on the left hand octaves in the end :(

  • Das ist "Musik machen". Da kannste Pogorelich "in der Pfeife rauchen".

  • Verdict: HOT

  • She is a pianist that is a big inspiration to me even to this day. She is definitely my favourite female pianist of all time.

  • Certificado intergaláctico! El Galaxy Argerich!

  • Any of the 620 people who commented would give almost anything to be 8th at that competition.

  • If she played like this how did she place 8 in the competition?

  • @JayIvory87 she won first place in 1965

  • @JayIvory87 She placed 1st! It was the 8th edition of Chopin competition.

  • From 4:57 to 5:30, it's heaven...

  • wow, i usually don't like Argerich, but really, I have to say this is one of the best

  • OH~My god...

    You transpose higher a semitone!

  • @zzzooooo wtf?

  • No, she's playing in the right key. The recording has been speeded up, probablý when it was transferred from the original 24 f.p.s. footage.

  • space!

  • So young and Soooo Martha!

  • @lamsalgado Yes, indeed. It is so rare to see other musician who have changed so little through out the time.

  • just watched this with my mouth dropped to the floor. Now to Horowitz's Chopin Balade.

I thank God for giving me the opportunity to enjoy this music to the deepest point of my soul.

Wow. If i ever meet her, i can only think of throwing myself around her to thank her for the enrichment she's given me for free.

    This is Life!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Something tells me you're just trying to provoke an argument.

You said that Argerich played better than Rachmaninov on the video with him performing; you even said that she is a better pianist than anyone around and that she has no competition.

Now you're saying that Richter plays this better than her (when you greatly expressed how Argerich was the best pianist for this).

I wouldn't be surprised if you go on one of Hamelin's videos and wonderfully express how Kastle plays better.

  • "You said that Argerich played better than Rachmaninov on the video with him performing; you even said that she is a better pianist than anyone around and that she has no competition. "

-I was being sarcastic with those comments. Argerich is an good pianist but Rachmaninoff and Richter are much more than simply pianist-virtuoso.

  • @Liebromeistal Ricther's production of the sound is a step higher, but I prefer Argerich's (which is unusual for me, but sometimes Ricther does have his flaws) Martha has great energy and has a great feel of the piece.

  • back then I saw ashkenazy play this piece and this lady plays it better !

  • notice in the left hand, the fourth finger playing over the fifth ... .

  • i wish i was in the audience. That way i could at least hear the last note !!

  • does the video have to cutout right before the last notes?

  • Hey, Martha, you can come play this at my house anytime you like. I have a Kawai, but it never gets a workout like this.

  • She looks like Demi Moore. I wish I had her talent. Martha's, that is.

  • goddess

  • That's putting it mildly... and there is no word in the English language for Martha's talent.

  • Back then, at that time, was she as famous as she was now?

  • @84Fish48Fish : back at that time she could have become the mother of a nation !
