  • in other words... Youtube needs a forest fire?

  • True, but it's hardly less diverse...it's just that the signal/noise ratio now favours noise- i.e. Billy Ray clones et al have flooded the market. Still fun, still mad, still vibrant. But I expect youtube may see less traffic as their competitors move along.

  • So what. I can't see why this is a problem. Someone explain to me this please. Lot of people are trying to get more exposed on youtube just because they want to be famous. Not because they actually have something to say but just because they think that being famous is a profession. It's just fare that these morons don't have any real exposure.

  • There are still new and succesfull channels, but they only get a lot of viewers when the already succesful channels mention them. A channel with videos like this one

    watch?v=ceTXNi_L3K4&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=SP42ABF66AAA204E74

deserves a lot of views, but doesn't get them.

  • There are a few things forgotten in this. There are niches, and niches online are what drives the internet market. These niches will exchange views, just by keeping in touch. So when a niche grows, all it's members do as well. Ever notice how your favorite Youtubers know each other? That's the power of the niche. You get into one as it starts, and let it carry you up. So I think it would be more like an ice flow in reverse than a forest.

  • I agreed. I'm new and its very hard to gain traction. I still think it can be done but its so much more difficult than it was 3 years ago.

  • I think that youtube will either adapt & change radically or die, beaten by a competitor that will allow for a more dynamic online experience. Recently, youtube has been making all sort of negative changes, such as if you comment "too many times" on any one video in discussion with other commenters, your text box is reduced from 500 characters & spaces to 200. Secondly, they allow for anyone to mark a comment "spam" when all it really is, is an unwanted point of view. (predictably, run out of...

  • you painted it green, you gave it all away. Green is a difference of potential, yellow means I play on my own, red means your a axial muscle group.... so its just not very rite of a choice, so to speek... go back to each one is a nuclear reactor, pumping turds into gold, ahhh, you must have anti grav or a chair, home depot and south park is gay.

  • what will youtube look like in 5 years time? no one can possibly know especially with the amount of screwing about with the format youtube loves >:/

  • Don't know, but if I get trolled into seeing another sxephil video- I might just fucken kill myself.

  • I don't have time to read all the comments & the content at the blog excuse me if this has been suggested. Chris Pirillo has a popular YT channel I believe he features other YT channels to give them exposure. YT needs to invest more in their servers. the Buffing (or throttling if they use that) is going to turn viewers away from YT.

  • This is the best video you have ever made Thunderf00t. Google/Youtube will be the home of big players in 5 years. By that time lets hope that something better has been invented.

  • @Thunderf00t You certainly go to some beautiful places. Regarding your video, perhaps You Tube isn't that important. I regularly prune my subscriptions down to those who consistently have something interesting to say. The Atheism-Religion debates and videos have, for me, become polarised and stagnant, and I gravitate more towards Philosophical channels where fundamentals of truth and falsehood are discussed. After all, I am for truth in all aspects of life, not just in religion.

  • Youtube will continue to get worse as times goes on. It will become even more commercialized and focused on "eCelebs" and the small folks will be forgotten or simply overlooked. It's much like Walmart and how they ran smaller competitors and Mom & Pop stores out of business completely.

  • I'm one of the group of people who try and find new things and people who interest me, rather than heading straight to RWJ. But my interest in terms of youtube has been meet. I have my intellectual, i have my funny guys, I have my gaming and I have my bloggers(just say it's Joey boots not some jumped up looks at me shane dawson) there really isn't much insentive to look around. just maybe it's due to the subscription system/profiles ect ect

  • The "sunlight" in this case is a myriad of users with as many interests, generally searching for specific information. While larger players do get a disproportionate share of attention, they don't necessarily obstruct one's ability to search and find content generated by more grass-roots users. I think subscriptions tend to help balance the playing field as well, defining one's more favored sources. However, your metaphor does hold up for the many who passively rely on YT to feed them content.

  • This is actually a pretty bad metaphor. Nature is most stable and harmonious when you leave it alone and you don't meddle with it.

  • @madass888 implying a earthquake, volcano, meteor doesn't srike the forest... Which in youtube case was the new layout now, new layout before and partners systems

  • @madass888 and it's still going very strongs

  • indeed

  • Whats wrong with YouTube, is the same thing thats wrong with the entire internet these days. When mom and pop america came on-line they brought with them their love of cliques, in the YouTube, Face Book world the strength of your argument is measured by how many 'friends' you have.. the debate was ended by people having to choose where their loyalties lie.

come on man... you can hear what i'm saying.. be a friend :D

  • Getting views on YouTube is like winning the RWJ lotto.

  • That's a good metaphor for capitalism.

  • I guess it depends on the goal. I agree exposure is important from an individual stand point, however, if the message that one wished to have presented is being presented - I guess the only thing missing is the glory (control and profit?) of presenting the message.

    ---

One could always address misrepresentations/misunderstandings, since, this is a foundational point to many areas of questionable pronouncements/thinking...

  • True. It's become extremely difficult for a new user to get views. I have old channels that I opened in 2006, and I am surprised how many views my videos got back then, compared to the modest hits I get with the channel I use now. YouTube used to be a fun experience, but now it just wears me out trying to avoid all the ads and commercial rubbish.

I wonder if it's a ripe time for a competitor to take advantage of all the disgruntled YouTube users and give us another home for our videos?

  • I think you hit the nail right on the head with this one. Very apt analogy.

  • Youtube needs a search feature limited by time. Highest rated videos of the last 24 hours, last 7 days, last 30 days - all would be extremely useful to find new high quality fresh videos.

  • I think this is true. By the time you even think you put a video up its been done thousands of times over already, it's harder and harder to be original on youtube. Most of the people who start getting many views had to have a larger channel help them. What is a small youtuber to do?

  • Needs a chainsaw.

  • what ever happened to finding an awesome youtuber everyday?

now all you see is either corporate music

or the same ol' people who have a gaming channel/vlog channel/miscellaneous channel

wish there was an alternative ........ a new youtube

    evntually it would too suck.

cant even comment properly now a days WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFf

    comment lag sucks dick

  • would blood be blue if it had no oxygen?

  • @lordofwarr why are squid blood blue?

  • As you found in the woods, the sprouts are still there, still growing, still thriving. One just has to look a little harder and see the marvels.

  • @Watergun8770 "Higher Power" Code for: I want you to live according to my own personal standards, but I know I am immoral and you wouldn't do it unless you thought it came from a scary authority who will torture you forever if you don't. Don't be pissed because science killed your god, just live your life and be happy knowing you no longer have to suck his dick to get rewarded with an eternity of sucking his dick.

  • Youtube is a business and for us to have it for free (not in absolute way because in the end of the day we are the consumers and the product) we have to acknowledge that the people standing behind it have to follow the market.

I am not making much sense here but my point is - youtube is a wonderful technology which gives the chance for people to share information and along the way it is making money.

If you have something to say there always will be someone to listen.

  • Easy, the same, just a few big giants, and screw the rest.

  • Your metaphor seems be pretty spot-on. This seems to also be the nature of capitalism, more specifically, the cycle of business. At first, there are a lot of players and in the mature phases of the business cycle there are few players that grown very large through the consolidation of power. I hadn't realized that this would also occur on youtube, but it makes perfect sense because youtube is, in large part, about money, power, and influence.

  • (Almost) anybody can still become a big player with tits and fluffy kittens. Or vice versa. Had I both, at my disposal, I could probably retire early. Power corrupts. YT corrupts absolutely?

  • I think this is a brilliant metaphor and spot-on!

  • There is unrest in the forest

there is trouble with the trees

for the maples want more sunlight

and the oaks ignore their pleas

  • Nope, wrong. youtube has been manipulating the traffic more and more. Look at its effect on the last presidential race. The powers that be cannot allow this. This is why all the ratings, sidebar recommendations are mostly one channel, etc., etc. Do a search on a controversial subject, you have to go to an outside search engine for the real results. They have removed just about all the fluid cross reference aspects. That guy Shane is is annoying but how does he have 2 mil hits?

  • It's a reasonable but incomplete metaphor. What it comes down to is that youtube isn't a forest of many habitats any more, it's systematically being slash-and-burned for monoculture farming.

And what a monotonous, solipsistic western-adolescent all-consuming culture it is: Miley, Minecraft and the Kardashians, where once were inspired teachers, escapologist cats, live revolutions, obscure musical geniuses, inspired teachers - from all five continents and speaking every language imaginable.

  • What I notice after an absence of upwards of a year: these big trees aren't old growth, for the most part. They're new transplants of gigantic media companies.

Crowding my netbook screen are TV tie-ins, movie-promos, celeb publicity, music-industry gadget, games & social-media marketing. I can't even close them! WTF?!

Using "upgrades", youtube now shades out the glorious, cosmopolitan, moving, inspiring, silly, intriguing, talented passionate, spontaneous amateur stuff - AS A BUSINESS MODEL.

  • This thing has always been going on. Something new emerges, eventually stagnates, and then disappears. Then something new emerges, stagnates etc....... In five years there might not even be a youtube, but there will be something else that basically has the same function. It's an on-going, never-ending process

  • Constantly feel im being made to watch crap I have no interest in, seems even that the people I subscribe to get lost on my main page. All the suggestions and featured stuff has been of virtually no value to me and just helps to make youtube an increasingly cumbersome experience.

  • The "Trending", "Popular" and "Featured" sections had a big hand in keeping new channels buried and the sheer mass of content makes it very hard to mine for the gems that are out there. Also, the tendency for a lot of people to flat-out lie in the vid title makes the mining a burdensome process.

But on the upside? YouTube: Proof of evolution by natural selection.

  • In 5 years Atheist's will have been proven right and many religious folk will commit mass suicide out of shame for their obvious stupidity, and Youtube will be taken over by an entity known as Skybrella CorpNet that will unleash hordes of Terminator zombies, programmed to eat the Mainstream Pop/Media Idols and their already braindead fans.

  • @TheCrimsonification After a moment of reflection (and a couple bowl hits) I realized that would leave the Illuminati vs Atheists for World Domination. I think the world's Military's would be evenly split. Some will fight for the Evil Empire CorpNet. But they will eventually fall to the Atheist Rebellion. May the Sauce Be With You. Hail The F.S.M.!

  • watch out for those brown bears!

  • @1GOD1JESUS - Oh, goody. A comment from Mr. Stagnation himself.

  • @1GOD1JESUS OMG!! Your just like me.. I Comment on videos too !!! So that make us brothers !! ;)

  • YouTube has no avenue for small to mid-sized channels to get exposure. YT structures everything so that videos and channels with the most views & subscribers are always at the top of the heap. Popular channels will continually feed off their own popularity, while lesser channels have to work much harder to gain anything. So... yes, YT is stagnant.

  • Maybe we just need a new place? And we all leave this stagnating giant to die...

  • @Vogter616 All the really good subjects for xtian pwnage are gone or neutralized. Venom was tamed and had his fangs were pulled. Nephie is dead or in jail or living in a box under a bridge with no computer. Where would Superman be without Lex Luther?

The fight is still going on for the Moslems. YT is rich with Koran pwnage. But most of TF's old audience isn't interested because they don't come from that background.

  • youll always be one of my fav trees tfoot

  • In five years time, the advertisements at the start of videos will come up in the middle of a video with no option to skip, just like television. That's my opinion anyway...

  • Thumbs up, it's a Thunderf00t video! : )

  • like every other market most of those big trees will be destroyed by rotting away from the inside. collaborative partnerships will dissolve over the usual, money, women, power, creative control, and harsh contracts. when maker studios launched i could see all this and more coming in the near future. that is unless people create something new and innovative that changes what we do on youtube or how we do it.

  • In addition to this analysis, I think between videos about knowledge and misinformation, there is a dichotomy between the believers and skeptics. It is sad because very few (believing) individuals are open-minded enough to pay serious attention to the rational videos. The others have their faith reassured by videos like : watch?v=BxzOu_gD54U

I almost feel like yt needs an extra flag similar to wikipedia that says something like "the information in this video has been contested for accuracy.."

  • There will only be music-channels and funny compilations left 5 years from now..

  • I'm wondering what exactly you mean when you say there's no change, as opposed to what kind of change there was four years ago.

  • Upload a video named "Funny Cats" and see how "stagnant" the views will be.

  • @theShadow117 but funny cats is such a dead horse. It's an old, if successful concept. However, it leads nowhere.

  • i think your metaphor is veryyy accurate , to represent youtube as an ecosystem. And like all ecosystems it will face change in climates in which case you must adapt or have much lower viability. As it currently stands I THINK youtube has entered a stable transition phase that could last for a bit until some new technology or viewing preferences come along

  • There are plenty of alternatives to ShitTube, but none with the same reach.

However if a cute cat or a pair of tits gets a million plus views in two days, is this really the best forum to spread intelligent ideas.

  • @SojournerLi What alternatives do you speak of?

  • I have seen a few of the people that I watched because they had a clear message that challenged mind turn into posters of vapid videos for the sake of collecting a few views and their money for the traffic. Some have even started retail sites. I do not watch these people any more.

  • The future of mew media is a mystery because it is so new and unexplored. I work in free to air Television and I see it is dying. We have much more bandwidth and it is acting like a vacuum sucking up all the dross of the past 50 years.

  • It's just how human beings work. We've got thousands of social networking sites, yet Facebook is used by most. Thousands of video sites, Youtube is king. Thousands of ways to search, Google is a god.

We pick our messiah, and give them the mantle.

Same with supermarkets, thousands of shops, a few supermarkets account for most groceries. Solving this problem, solves all the above. So far Thunderf00t, what you're asking us to do is boycott you lol

  • @superhamzah85

  • People subscribe, people have a limited time to watch videos. People then get new videos from subcribers, in total their "catchup" takes more time than scouting for new content. Pat Condell is a bad YouTuber, he exists only for himself, does not recommend any other users. Not sure if you're the same Thunderf00t.

  • I used to come to YouTube primarily for the News and Politics section, which, for some reason, has pretty much been destroyed. Now there are a grand total of about fifty videos on three pages, almost none of which are in English.

The way things are going, five years from now YT will be total crap.

  • Perfect analogy Thunderfoot! Perfect! Beautiful scenery by the way to, good job on capturing it on film underneath the shaded trees!

  • It also ensures progress and presses people to make better video''s.

  • In five years youtube will look like shit.

    "Improved" Beta channels

    Ads

Loss of the 5 Star Rating System

    Uglier Video Viewing Page

This is not going to end here. Youtube insists upon making itself less functional. Eventually it will lose traffic.

  • It would be more accurate if the bigger growths of Youtube were shrubs in the shadows of old media giants if not Bonsai trees amidst Baobab trees.

That's all that even the most prolific Youtubers are compared to TV networks and book publishers at the present. The same goes for the barriers to entry. It's better than public access TV.

In five years, if one of them gets lucky, they will be on par with the DuMont network, paving the way for other giants to come but ending up ultimately forgotten.

  • Charlie Bit Me will have 1 billion views.

  • They (PTB) make it impossible for learning channels to upload at times / they put crap in your already watched box - that u didn't /

They say no other videos like that when there is a thousand vid's like it !!!!!!!!

Get the picture they are in control

(complete) control !!! So realize you are using a tool that dr evil allows you to use !

So wear the tool out now ! I predict soon we will ALL be looking for a new TOOL ! ERS!

Good luck @ blowing up ~ YToobers !

  • Ok so it seems the Youtoobers have no inference ~

"Inference" is the act or process of deriving logical conclusions from premises known or assumed to be true.

The PTB bought google ~ YT ~FB and now they control your thoughts, learning and finding ability on YT / all I have seen since Fukishima is them keeping knowledge vid's

From blowing up /they steal your true # of watchers stopping the count at 302 while you get thousands of hits /

  • @smartazuis I love how you say they control your thoughts but they don't control your thoughts.. One thing about conspiracy theorist they always think they're ahead of the curve over everybody else.

  • Perhaps you could cover the stagnation of your own videos next?

A year or two ago this was an enjoyable channel. Now, it's trite, boring, repetitive nonsense.

  • @oooooooooorly

Personal attack as a tool for defending the status quo ...

    Oh, you're so original !!!

    ———

    P.S.

Now that I have fed you, breakfast won't be necessary. Back under your bridge ...

  • @PrairieDogged

How is attacking Thunderf00t's material a "personal attack?" I called his recent videos trite, not him.

  • I predict that soon the sidebar video suggestions will consist completely of large busted women replying to videos by popular youtubers.

  • @omgwtfbbqxD I predict that as soon as youtube shows the likes and dislikes of each video without having to watch the video, that the quality of videos will skyrocket (as long as there are no ways to cheat the rating system). Also, if videos bellow 60% or 3 stars never show up on searches, a lot of crap could be avoided. Also, there should be moderators and critics like in Newgrounds, so that shitty videos die, get deleted, and make space for good ones.

  • @mostliberal They moved away from the system you're referring because it doesn't work. Surely you remember the one to five star rating options? Because of vote bots and biased voting campaigns set up by youtubers, youtube had to move to a simpler, less efficient way of doing things.

  • @mostliberal But that's exactly what he is saying. If the shitty videos don't have a chance, then they wont improve because there will be no 'trial and error' for new video makers, and you will be left with just a handful of people making all of them. EVERYONE should have a chance, not just the people with all the resources. If your prediction is correct, YouTube will end up just like television, only seeing what the big wigs want you to see.

  • @Timmoux Not really. Have you ever been to newgrounds? The shit on the front page, while not as great these days, used to be pretty awsome in the early to mid 2000s. Once youtube showed up, newgrounds' popularity died, because no one wanted to wait for a flash cartoon to upload. The % of shitty videos is waaay lower on newgrounds than it is on youtube... even today. That's because users voted, and moderators decided to delete the shittiest videos, so that no one has to waste time watching them.

  • @omgwtfbbqxD

You have the funniest username I have ever seen.

  • @omgwtfbbqxD

No fuckin doubt man, great comment.

  • Youtube is falling. I already have to resort to greasemonkey / scriptish to hide elements that are just plain annoying (mainly the 'featured videos' window).

Usability aside, I am also getting frustrated by the content. People using arbitrary tags or misleading thumbnails on their video to lure in peole makes browsing Youtube a highly annoying experience.

  • @Arianyr I'm not entirely convinced YouTube is failing. There are obvious issues that have arisen in the past 2 years. It's a complicated mess to be exact. Content is all over the place and there's no legitimate way of getting your content out without pandering or doing backwater deals. YouTube, to me, went from a versatile potential industry of information to a well controlled and segmented few partners controlling the info. However, I always look back and say to myself: "MAYBE THEY'RE BETTER"

  • @WhuddayaWantFromMe he was a catholic mussolini was a catholic THE FUCKIN POPE WAS A CATHOLIC THEY SUPPORTED HIM HE USED HIS RELIGION TO JUSTIFY HIS MURDER OF JEWS

  • I'm on the bottom floor looking for mushrooms.....

    hehe

  • @WhuddayaWantFromMe My goodness, that's quite an impressive unfounded assumption you've got there.

  • Makes perfect sense. I get a fraction the amount of views I use to get. Bummer.

  • I agree. when you start putting videos out on Youtube you are like the small plants. it's only until you get enough sunlight(hits) that you become a tree.

  • I disagree. The young-grass stage is still present. It's just that you're focusing on the big oaks. Talented users can still grow into a big oak (if they want to, of course). I actually like the way it is now.

  • YouTube in 5 years will be completely inundated with ads way more so than today, unfortunately.

  • Who are these large YouTubers that I hear everyone complain about?

  • Sorry, TF, I don't understand this metaphor. Who are the so-called "Big Players" of Youtube supposed to be? How am I being [mis]directed to watch one producer vs. another?

  • You've just described evolution. The more successful one becomes, the more one consumes from the environment. From economics to the natural environment to the gathering of matter into black holes - it all works the same at the macro view. That is, while the details differ, things tend to go from small and many to large and few.

  • Youtube obeys the laws of the forest

  • In the future, the youtube poop will be more interesting than the big players, who will be harvested for lumber. You can think of the ytp as fertilizer for the new growth.

  • Poor jesusf00t. Anyone pretty, female, human, and young can be a success on YouTube. (I'm none of the four.)

  • First: Terrible metaphor, or you're showing a distaste for the destiny of organic propagation. Stagnation is incorrect. Entropy... stasis, wold be more descriptive. Early days of YouTube: dynamic, vibrant, very much like a big bang in cyberspace. Then things developed. As you're a scientist, you understand that the universe is following the same path to entropy. And YouTube, like the universe will slowly, yet eventually fizzle, unless something swoops in to take its place.

  • When I started my channel it took a year to get 1,000 subs. Organic growth is slow on YT, because you are relying on people finding your videos through searches of key words. I was lucky to get a nod by FFreethinker and my channel has grown exponentially over the last year. I think it is up to big names like you to help little channels along. Many channels have great content, but cannot get recognition due to low exposure. You have a chance to level the playing field by giving recommendations.

  • Oh; so it's just like the version of the free market that conservatives want.

  • WTF? just because some people are extremely popular says nothing about the "barriers to entry". If those people stop making popular content their popularity will drop faster than virtually any other medium. Power condensation is a natural trend of societies. You also completely fail to take into account that the total audience and uploads have exponentially increased (and continue to) over this time. If you want to support less popular channels give them a 50,000 view shout out and stop whining.

  • What's the song in the intro and where can I hear the rest?

  • I need the song from the intro

  • The "giants versus saplings" of YouTube is the same dynamics as a blog. Produce something interesting regularly and you'll be doing more than the 99% of the people who think they could make it but flub out after a few posts.

  • It will look like Roseanne Barr ate a huge bag of donuts and shat out a massive zuckerturd.

  • I have been thinking a lot about this lately, but rather in relation to economics. I mean, every market has a point where it becomes saturated, and in the case of Youtube I think it's néaring that point quite fast. This is why I think it is silly of large scale Youtubers (and Youtube themselves) to try to encourage people to make a career out of Youtube-ing, since they will anyway only recieve a fraction of the traffic anyway. Most people obviously haven't heard of normal distribution.

  • Forget Youtube, do you think we could apply this metaphor to the current state of economic affairs in the US and Europe?

  • I would disagree.

From the beginning, there have always been the Super Users who were miles ahead in traffic. Fred, Ray William Johnson, etc. There are still much smaller players and it's still relatively fertile. It's becoming a Partner or being one of the giants that is difficult. I think of it like big business. It's possible to have smaller business despite Costco/Walmart. The barrier on entry is similar, but the barrier to be wealthy has raised.

  • In 5 years there will be no YouTube.

People will share imagination scenes and documentation directly from their brain to a holographic 3D screen that floats around them. Everyone will be on top.

  • yea id say thats pretty acuarite.

  • Where is Brett Keane in this forest?

  • Awwww, matey. Ewe Choob has simply evolved and will continue to evolve or die in the same way that all things, ideas and those that are comprised of both do. It matters not where the impetus, nourishment and constrains arise but simply that it is and will or will not be. Just like you and me.

  • Thunderfoot, the terrane of the Youtube "forest" is also a metaphor, and probably has more impact than just a few big "trees" blocking the attention. Youtube and the associated businesses give preference to some channels before all others, there never was any actual growth.

  • Oh, and change the intro music.

  • Perhaps Youtube is just a reflection of the human race.

  • @wojovox gay

  • I'm gonna have to agree

  • Capitalism

  • God damn. I wish I could make videos this good or deep. gj

  • i think that there should be a non profit website like youtube based on donations and all the money should go into running the website.

  • thunderf00ts intro is bloody awesome. What is that music?

  • It's time to leave youtube - I am "lucky" to be selected (no opt-out) for the new layout and it's a deal breaker. The "subscriptions" page includes likes, comments, favorites and subscribes by all your subscriptions with no way to filter just new videos. Since I subscribe to tens of people who upload infrequently but are otherwise active, it drowns all information in useless noise. Youtube has just lost its primary functionality and became a joke in the like of "live feed" on facebook. :-(

  • @janek1978 I've noticed it's like that on Internet Explorer...and I agree that layout sucks..but I don't have that problem with google chrome.

  • @dilusional1 I just switched to Chrome today because my FF keeps freezing and you're right, it still works. That's how I was able to read your reply, because the new layout does not have a notification for new messages (at lest not one that I found).

  • @janek1978 On the front page where you see everything, mouse over the subscription and a link appears that says "edit subscription" and you can select what activity (new video, likes, etc) that you want to see from that sub.

  • @skyppy1313 No, that only works on the current version of the site. The redesign does not have the hover "edit" AND it ignores the settings you already have (all my subscriptions are "video only" but I still get all that crap).

  • Comment removed

  • I think a better metaphor would be Evolution by natural selection.

  • especially since they got rid of 'view new videos'

  • Sorry, boi. I'm a chain saw. /l38OzsAztpo I doubt anybody will take the time to look @ my video, since I'm neither big, nor a guy. But here it is. Ever think part of the stagnation is "the big guys" all pretty much look the same?

  • in 5 years youtube will look exactly like television does now, with sponsored shows and financial backing pushing this agenda or that. its freedom will be co-opted.

  • YT is looking more and more like facebook every day. I hate the new home page.

  • Youtube is not a level playing field?! My whinge detector detects a bit more whine than the normal, already insufferable, levels which your videos have evolved to lean on. Don't you think that's hypocritical coming from someone whose youtube channel is professionally produced?

  • Hopefully an other similar site will appear, more open and less prudish and pretentious that will actually have freedom of speech. Youtube is getting more nazi by the day.

  • I hope this website is dead 5 years from now.

Nothing about this site is proper.

It should just close, and re-open.

  • It is a well-known phenomena in many areas. A new expanse opens up, all start on a level playing field adopting it and bending it to their own ends. Some eventually attract more attention to themselves and "grow" into those giants, changing the landscape at the macro level, and it /appears/ that the barrier to entry becomes huge.

The truth of the matter is that the landscape is just /different/, and it is just a matter of putting in the requisite effort to grow big as the current giants did.

  • I'm sorry, but youtube has never been a level playing field. Through blocking and disabling of comments, crazy people have very real mechanisms to make it far less than level.

Frankly, I don't see how it's the correct forum in which to discuss things of import. It's a stilted, frustrating and superficial forum, at best.

  • @hairyreasoner the majority of people are superficial so its a good fit.

  • @hairyreasoner It's a great forum to talk as long as there is no cencorship, no blocking. Maybe ignoring would be better, but still: No cencorship. As so many people use youtube, getting a message across has great potential using YT. At least in common tongue, as opposed to more specialized forums where just a selected few views things.

  • just think about Epicmealtime, no one even knew or have heard them a few months back... they were on the forest floor, and now they are standing tall like a tree.

So it's the content, and unique content that attracts people...

  • No one goes to youtube any more because it is too crowded.

  • Why is he saying "secure, undisclosed location"?

  • You are mad because atheism is dieing on youtube. What a hoot. :) :D

  • @GraydonW

Wow, atheism sure is a big thing in the US. Over here in England and Europe its much more relaxed. As in, we accept that some people believe in a religion, but we don't let it get in the way of human progress. i mean its not even a social taboo, its just common place to be rational about things over here.

  • In relation to this video- I agree with TF. My reasoning is somewhat different, however. Youtube has done many things to endanger it's 'safe harbor' status, particularly when it comes to DMCA claims. If they aren't careful, their own policies on DMCA claims and video censorship could open them to litigation from Many sources.

  • so much butthurt in one video
