today i got my corn. its a few months old, buti have a heating lamp and a tiny heat mat. i put the heating mat under its hide, but the guy said to put theheating lamp (it doesnt have a light its only heat) over the water. something about humitiy. is that ok because ususally they dont say that. and wen i go to sleep tonight should i leave it on or off (the mat is tiny) please answer.
@lulugal31 i'm not real experienced with snakes but a store associate at petsmart said you don't want to put the water near any heat source. not sure if that's true or not. just what i was told.
heat mats are fine as the only heat source unless you have a cold house also never use any heating equipment without a thermostat for your safety as much as the snakes
No, do not leave the lights on all night. It could cause over heating, and snakes do sleep believe it or not and they do not need light. That's why you should have a heat mat at the bottom of the cage to regulate the temp. :)
hey any one i have a 3 and a half foot corn snake in a 4ft by 2ft by 2ft vivarium ...at the moment im usein a 60w head bulb n in the warm end it reaches 85f.. n in the cold end in the cave it's 77f in the day time but it dosent seem that warn in the vivarium what heat bulb wattage would be best would i be better of with a 100w heat bulb its a wood viv pm me thanks
I"ve been keeping a ball python for years now, and i only use a bin and a heat pad.. It works great. NO need to have a heat pad and a heat lamp, it will dry out the snakes skin, and give them incomplete sheds. Just cause this dude is young and has long hair, doesn't make him cool.
All i have is a heat pad too, but i have it hooked up to a herpestat. Do you have a probe thermometer to tell you the temperature? I have the pad set up so that it is about 99 degrees right above the heat pad. Since its winter, my house is cold, and that's why i have the temperature that high. If you're house is fairly warm or room temperature, you should have the temperature at 85-90 degrees right above the heat pad. In the summer time i leave the heat pad off.
I don't really like expert village, but I like this guy. He sounds like he knows what he's talking about, while the others sound like they are reading stuff off a paper as the do the video....
150 - 250 watt loool thats too hot the reptile shop i brought my corn snake said a 60 watt light bulb would just burn the snake imagine what a 150 or 250 watt would do!!!!!
@MichiganHerpss Actually corn snakes ARE nocturnal because i own them myself... i have books on the care of them that clearly state they're nocturnal. The fact that they sleep/hide during the day and come out at night says it all! It's not true that 'most' snakes are active during the day - 'some' yes, but not most.
So perhaps YOUR research is a little lacking or confused. Garter snakes are usually quite active snakes so are often exploring during the day. But not corns, and not a lot of others.
@fleebinflarbin i know the shop were i brought my snake said a 60watt bulb would burn the snake he wants to use a 75 or 100 watt thay would fry the snake i only use a 14.5watt heat matt that the reptile shop recommended
i just got my corn snake yesterday. he seems well but the room temp is in the mid 80's as it is very hot lately. all i have is a basking lamp with a 50 watt bulb because the lady at the pet store said i dont need a heat mat since it is hot out. with my lamp on it is almost 90 degrees! should i leave my heat lamp on? is my corn okay with just the 80-85 degree room temp?
i just got my corn snake yesterday. he seems well but the room temp is in the mid 80's as it is very hot lately. all i have is a basking lamp with a 50 watt bulb because the lady at the pet store said i dont need a heat mat since it is hot out. with my lamp on it is almost 90 degrees! should i leave my heat lamp on? is my corn okay with just the 80-85 degree room temp?
i just got a corn snake and a starter kit it has light bulbs but no heat pad is this concern the tempature in there right now is 80 degrees ferinheight(cant spell in a rush)
I am a first time corn snake keeper. I have two corn snakes sharing the same enclousure. I have been told that t'is more preferable to keep them in seperate enclousers, but we got a large enough viv to keep them together. I use a heat mat & bulb, the mat only goes three quarters of the viv. I have placed the hut on the mat area, and the water bowl on the cool side, as when i had it on the mat, the humidity was too high. I have been told max temp. is between 85-90 degrees F. Is this right?
what do i need to set up a baby corn snake setup.... im gonna start with a 10 gallon tank... anyone have any ideas? ty and leave a list of what i need
2 hide boxes, water bowl, maybe a branch, substrate, for corns...aspen or centerfresh work the best. i like heat emitters better, but bulbs work fine. And a under the tank heater. All that and of course the snake, lolz
@sampson95 not all are dangerous, my friend has one that doesnt get very hot, and it has no hot spots, i know, because i thought it would hurn his snake so i checked and there were no hot spots at al
ok i really want a snake this is new to me how much would it cost if i got a corn snake and a habitat food bulb all of it together how much would it cost
What if you buy the snake bedding that doesn't work with a heating mat(like the hampa snake bedding)? Only need a heating lamp + a "light" UVB lamp? so 2 lamps will work without a mat? and what is the difference between the infra red heating lamp and the ones that doesn't give out any light?
Ditto, this guy seems pretty genuine to me. He pretty much refelcts how ive kept my snake for 4yrs.
Snakes are fine with heatmatts so long as its on a stat and putts out enough heat for the size of enclosure. I also use a Infra Red lamp with some of mine.
If you get the temps right a heat mat is all you need. Make sure it's not gonna harm whatever you put it on. Like a table. A thermostat is a good investment but not necessary if you know what your doing.
Corns are mostly nocturnal they are most active at dusk and dawn. So the light coming in your window should be enough. UVB is good for most reptiles but not necessary for corns.
no the snake wouldnt die unless its like 20 degress or some crazy temp. in your house. my corn snake is doin fine and all i have is a heating pad and a floresent(however you spell it) light.
yes they are I have talked with many reputable breeders and they agree that a heat mat is enough now if you keep you house like 60 degrees then you may need another heat source
People... Come on now be smart about this. It all depends on what the temp is in the room you keep your tank. if its 60 degrees in the room then a tank mat alone may not be enough, if you keep the room around 75 or 80 degrees then it may be enough. use temp gauges to make sure the temp is where you need it.

actually u got 3 ways of heating. 1 is heat rock and this is a no no so don't go neer it. 2 u can use a heat mat. A heat mat is fine to use and helps in digestion but ur snake will burrow since corn snakes are borrowers and it might get to the under tank eater and get hurt so keep that in mind. 3 u have the basking side.
