he is turning that handle, which also looks strange , the wrong way, the melody string will be more powerful if the handle is turned around the usual way :P

The Drone Strings in this particular song are supposed to be stronger, it's the way the piece was written. Like if you played violin and the piece said bow with the other side of the bow, or the wooden (or fiber glass) part.
