I live in Wilmington and would love to get involed in something like this. What would my first step be? I have time to volunteer. if you could please email me,
Great video, thanks for posting this and thanks for your efforts. We had the pleasure of watching a nest hatch last summer while visting the Carolina coast. It is truely a wonderous experience like this video shows. The work the volunteers do is impressive and I appreciate your efforts
Excellent post,those little ones really took off for the water.I am sure they are on the endangered list. Seeing a new generation moving on with such enthusiasm is awesome.You taking the time to share your video deserves a Thank You..
@ndorow also, they follow the light of the moon (which is on the ocean side) so that's why they don't want people with lights or flash photography because then they'll follow that.
i've read that they follow a 'magnetic map' that they are born with that acts like a compass, they can determine subte changes in the earth's magnetic field and head for a target that they know instinctually. that and light, i hear its lighter on the horizon at night and artificial lights can disorient the little guys. not sure bout daytime, i guess they just recognise water.
@ydnar92brizz plus they fallow the moon or the sun if they r hatched in the day time. once a nest of sea turtles hatched at my birthday party! it was pretty awsome we helped them all to the water (without touchin them ofcourse) :) lol
little ones use moon and stars reflections over the sea and they go to the moving reflections.thas way when they r hatching, you don't use any outside light like torch, flashlights, beach camp fire ect.=))
Volunteers wear gloves to protect the turtles from any potentially harmful bacteria and/or chemicals (ie: suntan lotions, insect repellent, etc.) that might be on their hands and to protect themselves from any possibly harmful bacteria that the turtles may be carrying.

How do they know that they need to go to the water??
ydnar92brizz 2 years ago 4
Mother Nature and natural instinct directs them to the water. How is that for an answer. Honestly, its the best I can do.

Did you help any of them?
PrettyLoather 2 years ago
I didn't as i was operating the camera. Other volunteers (with gloves on) gently nudged the turtles back into the trench if they started to wander.
ndorow 2 years ago
@ndorow why with gloves?
