  • Fantastic! Perfect rasas, I love the graceful hands of the "lady" character, and the story is so lovable! :)

  • adorable .. i'm in love with kathakali dance . . i love to watch it again and again .. :D

  • this is awesome i wanna do this :) haribol!

  • what is onam?

  • @MyLalinea It's a celebration predominantly celebrated in the Southern state of India called Kerala. You might wanna google some, it can help you more than I can :)

  • Why are only men allowed to do the Kathakali dance?

  • @MrJAich1 Women were traditionally considered prostitutes or harlots, so in Kathakali beginnings (along with Chinese opera, Noh drama, Kabuki theatre, Greek drama, Elizabethan, etc.) women were forbidden to participate in the theatre, and men were assigned womens' roles.

  • @12eirvin No my friend I don't think that's the case. Learning Kathakali is a difficult to as it needs patience, training and it takes a long time to master it. You have to learn ancient kerala martial arts. It takes around 8-10 years. This might be the reason for it. N your first sentence is wrong. They didn't consider as prostitutes. May they have been underestimated in case of this dance form in that era.

  • @12eirvin But now a days girls also perform Kathakali dances. There might be one more reason- in indian culture after marriage girl moves to husband's house. So may be because of this they might be reluctant to follow this dance form.

  • @graviiify Ah, that makes sense too! Very interesting, thanks. :)

  • Humour is one of the emotions (rasa) included in kathakali and other Indian dance/theatre - I definitely agree that the earlier part of this, at least, is meant to be humourous. Please, Indian folk, do not always be so eager to read insults at every turn -I've noticed that with other forums. Sure , some people are ignorant - it's not worth bothering with their comments.

  • ahah its funny.. I laughed

  • @mindtoonz262 ..can u show some of ur old cultural artz...may i too also get laughed.....

  • @basil7ab ...hmm sorry I thought it was suposed to make me laugh, I like indian art I wasnt insulting it

  • I am taking back by the negative coments made by some here, people need to expand thier minds and realise waht this all means and the preperation and how old this form of storytelling goes back, this is awsum and great work and i only wish taht some day i can visit this country and be able to sit in a theater and be able to wach somthing like this be potraid infront of me this is awsum a great work. if you enjoy things like this im always greatful if youd add me as a friend

  • are the dancers men?

  • @MyLalinea yes they are

  • hoo do u think u are... god

  • anyway were do u come from??? u know if some1 said tht to ur country how would u feel... i wood write some like u did for my country...

  • They are clever bcoz they r telling a story without talking...

i am sure u wouldnt have thought of this genius clever intelligent awesome superb marvellous and other words like that idea. It is none of ur busy wax to watch this and comment on it so badly....i am sure other cultures woud have an even worse one.

  • it's not a silly culture... u might just be jealous man.

by the way can u dance like that??? of couse no

  • what a silly culture

  • @phenolholic ..haii great culture.....what is the stage of dow johns now....LOL...we indian praying for u..

  • Excellent....I juz would like to ask? will u perform at Malaysia..Im finding for a kathakali dancer??

  • Guys this is not easy at all. I really never seen Kathakali so closely before, look at that eyebrows, hand movements that expressions.

Think twice before criticize it, god save this cultural wealth of india

  • Cool! I love those seductive eyebrow moves!

  • Unbliavel

  • facially this is a feat and the precise jerky movements give it a surrealism that is pleasing to the eye. I think the story was well communicated but my only critisism is the singer in the middle..what is he doing with his face...i mean if he's suppose to do that for maybe sound quality or it's a dialectic thing fine but...he looks like he has problems of the mind in the nicest possible way.

  • Which artists are performing here please?

  • only males do kathakali.

  • @ihavefoundrei not only males but also ladies are in kadhakali..

  • @arunvrajan2007 thanks

  • @arunvrajan2007 no, its just males

  • @irot3456

off-late, there are a few only-female kathakali troupes also, but the fact is that, either it is only men, or only women, there is NO mixed performance

  • wow...expressions @ 00:44 is priceless!!! :D

  • This is a fantastic performance. The expressions are priceless. The costumes are brilliant. Enjoyed every second of it.

  • expressions are awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • is the female version a man in this dance? looks so manly

  • @tonynaso Ha Ha yes it is indeed a man.

  • @tonynaso

there are wonderful kathakali performers like Kottakkal Sivaraman, whom you will can never recognise as a man while performing, you can read more about him on wikipedia

  • expressions are so wonderfull
