Why do advertising agencies use John Thompson for voice overs,? the man has two convictions for drink driving. That is convictions not offences. He is utter scum frankly. No Aviva insurance for me.
Although quite insensitive to anyone who's actually lost a father, I think this is aimed directly at fathers. I've just read 'Hidden Persuaders', and page 73-4 states that men wanted to 'control' the quality of their family's lives if anything should happen to them. That was written in 1957. It's intriguing that they've resurrected a theory directly from that book. Be interesting to see what fathers think of this ad.
@MattyandScottie Maybe a family need a break if they've just lost a parent. Maybe they need to still eat and live. Would you prefer to have no money and end up living on a sink estate? How odd.
@UltimateDalekMaster I'm in the same boat myself. I found this advert crass in its thinly veiled efforts to play the emotion card, and am frankly disgusted. The ASA has already received a vast number of complaints about this advert. I can appreciate that some people argue that it just serves to highlight Life Insurance issues, but the subject matter on offer here is what I find so offensive. There are other ways to sell life insurance without using this kind of subterfuge.
What was Whitehouse thinking? Playing a dead person to guilt us into buying from Aviva. Poor judgement on his part. Oh, and PS... other places are better value.
My dad was offered life insurance. 'Nah' he said 'I'm fit as a fiddle'. Two months later he was dead and... Well, no money, no income. A single mother with two young children having to take up the business he left behind, and only a small Widow's Benefit to help. I'm not saying go for Aviva, but I will say, fathers and family wage-earners, if you haven't already, get life insurance. Perhaps if my dad had seen an advert like this he would have let his ego take a back seat.... Oh, well...
That's more like it FarkFilms. Whitehouse is a good actor but there something slimy about this and something "of the night" about him. It shocked me but the idea is familiar (The Others; Sixth Sense). Aviva ain't doing this for the loved ones left behind - it's for profit. And I don't like this kind of advertising that tries to scare or shock people into forking out money for death insurance. Bastards!
I saw this on TV a few moments ago and wondered what folks on ebay thought about it. So yeah! Stunned silence. Even more so considering what came before.
This is the first advert that made me cry. I never thought much of the earlier Aviva ads (and I don't know if they were good for the company) but this one is.The fact that Paul Whitehouse is such a chirpy person makes it sadder for the kids to lose their dad when fairly young.
Definitely the best advert Aviva have produced in a very long time. If I did not have life insurance I would be on the phone as soon as the advert finished.
Simple, powerful message conveyed brilliantly with no overdone sentiment. After all the previous Aviva 'comedy 'ads that delivered a real smack between the eyes. I bet Aviva have already seen a rise in enquiries for life assurance, but that's only half the point - it really sticks in your mind, and that's how the best ads work.
We should have seen the family's breath when he was in the room. His son should have confided in him that he sees dead people. This is annoying. They should stick to being sort of funny.
Does it make you think about getting life insurance though? It might be hard hitting but unless it makes to assess your own need for life insurance, then it's pointless.
@bagna007 I don't believe this advert is insensitive in the slightest; it is a powerful way to make people wake up and realise that they really should be taking some action to help look after those left behind should the worst happen!
Clever because all the adverts that preceded were played for comedy so this is genuinely startling the first time you see it. Not the clue at the beginning, only three passports are packed.
I live this advert! Not in a creepy way, but just because it's a nice thought, that you lived one is going go be there for you :) really good acting, and well directed :D
this just makes me want to cry :'o

I hate this advert. I've suffered a paternal figure loss, and the idea of using it as an advertising ploy is, in my own view, ridiculous.
